Choose Unisa Embarking on master s and doctoral postgraduate study is a life-changing experience, both for your career and for personal growth. Approached correctly it will be extremely rewarding, an intellectual adventure. It can, however, also be daunting and deeply disappointing, and it remains your responsibility to take advantage of the resources available to you as a postgraduate student at Unisa. This brochure contains useful information that will assist you in reaffirming Unisa as your postgraduate university of choice and ensure that you comply with the requirements of the application process. It also outlines some of the initial challenges that you may face as you embark on your master s or doctoral studies. This brochure will assist you in answering some of these important questions: Why is Unisa a good option for postgraduate study? Does Unisa offer postgraduate study in my chosen area of specialisation? What are the key steps in the application process? What are my qualification options and do I fulfil the admission criteria for my chosen qualification? The most important question, however, is one that this brochure cannot answer: Are you ready for the personal challenge of postgraduate study? It is a decision not to be taken lightly. It will demand commitment, academic maturity, discipline, but most of all a true desire to acquire knowledge and to stretch the parameters of your mind. my Choice @ Unisa 2012 7

Unisa a pillar of the academic community Unisa is a university with a proud history; a story that began in South Africa but one that has now reached the greater African continent and the world, thanks to the continued dedication and aspirations of our academic staff. As a university, our reputation and academic ethos are a direct reflection of our people. People that are so passionate about their fields of interest and supportive of learning in others that it seems to diminish their vocation by calling them staff or lecturers. Rather a philosophy of mentorship exists, particularly with our master s and doctoral students. When you are accepted to Unisa for master s or doctoral studies, you are welcomed into our academic community with a wealth of knowledge, guidance and support to assist you in achieving success. Our master s and doctoral students, along with our academic community, are the lifeblood of this university. Our focused approach, with several research initiatives in place, ensures that we consistently produce world-class research, in many instances with strong local and African relevance. In addition, our number of NRF-rated researchers is increasing exponentially year on year and we have shown a steady increase in research outputs over the last seven years. In the section that follows we introduce you to our colleges and their fields of expertise, the Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership and the Unisa School of Graduate Studies. We also provide a brief overview of the Unisa Library facilities and their benefits for master s and doctoral students. The colleges Each one of our colleges and departments at Unisa has specific focus areas for master s and doctoral students. It is important that prospective students ensure that their areas of interest and proposed research topics align with the expertise that is available within these departments. We have therefore included a brief summary of the colleges to guide your decision-making process. You are advised to visit the college websites for more information. College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences comprises two schools: the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the School of Environmental Sciences. Within these two schools are four academic departments offering master s and doctoral degrees in more than seven disciplines, ranging from Consumer Sciences to Geography. Students are welcome in all areas of these disciplines, and master s and doctoral students enjoy further interaction with our research units and focus areas. These include Biotechnology for Health and the Environment, Responsible Consumerism, Agribusiness, Science for Rural Development and ABEERU (Applied Behavioural Ecology & Ecosystem Research) which provides great advantage to our students as these are transdisciplinary units with significant international participation and interest. These units were created to conduct basic and applied research to solve industry-related problems. This integrated approach has clear academic and practical value, and is in line with Unisa s education philosophy and of the approach followed by the National Research Foundation of establishing and supporting research focus areas involving transdisciplinary research teams. We pride ourselves on both the number and quality of our postgraduate students and provide many opportunities for practical application, such as close working relationships with government and industry partnerships with national bodies like parks boards, research councils and municipalities, as well as international universities like the University of Lancashire and Liverpool in the UK who work closely with CAES researchers, creating an opportunity for students to do joint research locally and internationally my Choice @ Unisa 2012 9

These departments are supported by a fully-fledged Teaching Practice Department which will soon be expanded to assist foreign students, an office of Tuition and Learner Support and an Office of Graduate Studies to support our master s and doctoral postgraduate students. To fulfil our mandate of being an engaged university, the college is re-establishing the Unisa Centre of Early Childhood Education into a state-of-the-art multifunctional unit that will be used for teaching and research, as well as assisting children from the neighbourhood. Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership The Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL) is an autonomous academic department within the College of Economic and Management Sciences at Unisa. In 1965, following the advice and active support of senior South African business leaders, Unisa decided to introduce a Master of Business Leadership (MBL). The success of this programme, coupled with the unique characteristics associated with a multidisciplinary degree led, in 1969, to the establishment of the SBL as an autonomous body within the university. As its name and that of its flagship programme (the MBL) indicate, the emphasis from the start has been on leadership development as opposed to administration. Regarded as one of the top three business schools in South Africa, the SBL has produced more than a third of all the MBL/MBA degrees awarded by South African universities since its inception. Driven by a philosophy of innovation, social responsibility, ethical engagement and global connectedness, the success of the SBL s approach is demonstrated daily by achievements of the people and organisations who have participated in their programmes. More than 150 of the MBL graduates appear in the Who s Who of Southern Africa, and many SBL alumni hold senior positions in world-class companies. my Choice @ Unisa 2012 15

Make the right choice How ready am I for my master s and doctoral postgraduate studies at Unisa? You are a successful student. You have completed the necessary undergraduate or honours degree to qualify for postgraduate study. Can you remember what it was like and what you wish you had known before you started? The aim of this section is to stimulate your thinking about, and planning for, further studies. How does your postgraduate choice influence your career development? It is an opportunity to re-examine your career vision and consider what needs changing. We suggest that you look at this from three points of view: personal development needs, knowledge of the field and career prospects. While these three points are interlinked, they may have different emphases according to your circumstances. If these three points are in balance, you increase your chances of completing your studies successfully and reconnecting more purposefully with your career path. Integrating personal and career needs At this point, your postgraduate studies may be motivated by a balance between experience and academic sophistication. From a professional and personal point of view, you may see it as a sense of completion or as a way of enhancing your career. Or it might provide entertainment value, that is, a useful way of occupying your time or your contribution to humanity. The degree is not about career mobility as such, but rather about life enhancement. Are your expectations of postgraduate studies in balance with your current career needs, as well as the changes you anticipate for the future? How much information have you gathered in order to assess the possible value of the future of your studies? Were you able to do some job shadowing? If not, we recommend that you conduct at least an informational interview to refine your career ideas. Demands of postgraduate study Would you enjoy training in research where, on the one hand, you have to be skilful with the practical elements (research, analysis, writing and presentation) and, on the other hand, be masterful in the theory and methodology of a knowledge domain? Postgraduate study demands time, energy and commitment. How well are you able to tolerate frustration when faced with negative feedback, for example? This section on motivation and goals indicates how deeply you have thought about the possible impact of your postgraduate studies on your life. The more clearly defined your goals are, the better your chances of completing your studies. Internal sense of control refers to how well you focus your will, your heart and your mind on the task at hand. You take responsibility for your actions, and you manage your stress and your relationships. my Choice @ Unisa 2012 19

Deepening of academic skills Postgraduate study requires a deepening of your academic skills in order to make a contribution to knowledge creation. Knowledge creation is the apex of postgraduate achievement. The workload at postgraduate level demands that you do more work on your own (reading, making notes and reflecting) when compared to undergraduate level. You set the timeline for the study goals you wish to achieve. The sections on time management, study responsibility and academic preparedness provide guidelines, but how well you progress with your postgraduate studies depends on your ability to assimilate information generated by these questions. Journey of discovery The biggest challenge that confronts you at this point is to extend your thinking and capacity to find and integrate information. In order to find an appropriate topic, your ability to use advanced search functions on the computer and extensive use of the library is very important. How quickly can you become more skilful? Finally, postgraduate studies have equal amounts of sorrow and joy. Nobody can teach you how to find the balance; it is a journey of discovery. Factors that contribute to success According to Dominguez (2006: 22-23) there are internal factors that you should consider developing before you start and, external factors that the institution should have in place: Internal Planning abilities Map goals and objectives of thesis/dissertation project Link tasks to specific due dates Adjust your plans as the project unfolds Refine your writing strategies as you progress Personal characteristics A positive orientation to life Hard working and focussed on the project Flexible, disciplined, confident and resilient Communication skills Reflect on the feedback provided Express ideas Convey concerns Communicate proactively, do not sit back and wait to be told External Support from the supervisor Someone who understands your academic and individual skills Someone who guides you through your rewrites in a way that inspires you Someone who is focussed on your success and from whom you welcome feedback Family support Provide relief and support as you progress with your thesis/dissertation Institutional support Provide training workshops that develop and promote interpersonal and goal setting skills and encourage resiliency skills The institution is committed to the postgraduate students and have a number of strategies in place that push them to completion 20

What can you do to meet the challenges? We suggest that you work through this check list to gauge how ready you are for postgraduate study. Please note that the following points provide a framework of the necessary skills. There are no right or wrong answers, so be as honest as you can. Use this check list and simply indicate Yes or No to each of the statements below. Then use the feedback to decide which adjustments you should make to be an effective student. Important things to consider before you apply While the process for applying is relatively simple, there are many factors that can affect your application and chances of acceptance. Please use this information in conjunction with the summary of the application process on page 69 to ensure that you embark on this process with all the information at hand. The foundation of master s and doctoral studies The core requirement of a master s degree is to demonstrate the capability for independent research. The core requirement of a doctoral degree is that the research must be original and must contribute to the body of knowledge. Admission requirements Each master s and doctoral degree has specific minimum admission requirements. Please check the detailed admission tables to ensure that you comply with all the requirements. Please note that all applications are assessed on an individual basis and compliance with minimum admission criteria does not mean an automatic acceptance into your qualification of choice. In addition, Research Methodology must have been completed at postgraduate level (NQF 8 or equivalent). Should you not meet this requirement you will need to complete this module for non-degree purposes before applying for your master s or doctoral degree. An alternative pathway for students who do not meet the 60% requirement (where applicable) for admission to either master s or doctoral level is provided below. Submission of a portfolio consisting of the following: a motivation, in no more than three pages, providing reasons for wishing to be admitted a CV highlighting experience relevant to the field of interest evidence of engagement with research which could include one or more of the following: - a written report of a scholarly nature - a literature survey - a paper presented at a conference - a published article Recognition of prior learning (RPL) If you are interested in RPL, please send an e-mail to rpl@unisa.ac.za. Documentation that must accompany your application The following certified, supporting documents must be uploaded in scanned format together with your application form: - ID document (South African citizens) or passport (international students) - Marriage/divorce documents (if applicable) - Complete and incomplete academic records (including the scoring legend) - Any other additional documents indicated on the admission requirements - Sworn translations of documents if they are not in English or Afrikaans International students proof of meeting English language requirements 24

Extract from the Procedures for Studies for Master s and Doctoral Degrees on the English language requirement for international students: 2.1 Applications from international students follow a similar route to that of local students but care must be taken with the English language requirements. International students should show that they have taken the TOEFL (http://www.ets.org) or IELTS (http://www.ielts.org) international language test or equivalent. 1 If further language assistance is deemed necessary students may be required to register for a language module. 1 All non-native English-speaking applicants (other than those who have been educated in the medium of English language during their two most recent years of study) must satisfy one of the following requirements: IELTS: overall score of 6.5 (with at least 6.5 in each of the four components); TOEFL (paper-based): overall score of 600, with a Test of Written English score of 5.5; TOEFL (computer-based): overall score of 250, with Test of Written English score of 5.5; TOEFL (internet-based): overall score of 100; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): grade A; Cambridge Certificate for Proficiency in English (CPE): grade B; English Language GCSE, IGCSE or O-level: grade B; International Baccalaureate Standard Level (SL): score of 5 in English; European Baccalaureate: score of 70% in English. Difference between research and coursework master s degree The majority of master s qualifications are full research degrees, with a full dissertation. In some instances a coursework option exists, with a combination of modules and a smaller research component (eg dissertation of limited scope or short dissertation) for your master s degree. These coursework options are indicated in the qualification tables. Please note that if you select the coursework master s option you will be required to register for, and officially pass, two modules before you will be eligible to register for the Research Proposal Module, unless otherwise stated. Time required for processing an application The time required to process a complete application can vary and for that reason we suggest that you apply as soon as applications open on 1 August 2011. Factors to be aware of: Qualifications with a selection process usually have an earlier application date. Please go to page 26 of this brochure for the application dates and contact people. Certain international degrees will need to be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. It is the student s responsibility to contact, and manage this process, through SAQA. Please note that this can be time consuming and could delay your application by as much as one year. Once SAQA verification has been received please resubmit your application to Unisa with the necessary SAQA evaluation certificate. In some instances these applications will be referred to the relevant academic department for review. Contact the Directorate: Student Admissions and Registrations, Postgraduate Qualifications master s and doctoral section on mandd@unisa.ac.za if you have not received feedback from the university within 21 working days after the closing date of applications. my Choice @ Unisa 2012 25

Qualifications offered Please check the qualifications carefully and ensure that your chosen qualification is offered by Unisa. All qualifications offered are listed in the drop-down box in the online application form. Once you have been accepted You will be notified in writing and, once you have registered for the Research Proposal Module, you will be assigned a contact person within the relevant department. Once you have contacted the department you will either be referred to the appropriate subject expert within the department or the contact person will guide you through the Research Proposal Module until your topic is finalised. It is important to note that the more robust your initial concepts for your topic, the easier it will be to assign an appropriate supervisor to you early on in the process. 26

The role of the supervisor Your supervisor is integral to your studies and will assist you in planning your academic year, ensuring that you are aware of all critical milestones and detailing both your and their responsibilities during the course of your studies. Both you and your supervisor will sign a Code of Conduct that governs the conditions of your relationship. The support and guidance of your supervisor will be invaluable during the course of your studies. The Research Proposal Module This is the foundation of your master s or doctoral studies. It is incredibly important to have already considered the direction that you wish your research to take. We suggest that before you apply you should have conceptualised a viable topic; one that can be researched further and that has a body of existing literature and research (between 15 and 20 sources) to support it. Your supervisor will then guide you through the process for completing and submitting your research proposal. Please be aware that there are strict closing dates for submission and acceptance of this module in the academic year, as well as ethical clearances that must be obtained prior to proceeding with the research. Funding your studies The Research Proposal Module carries a fee of approximately R3,000 In addition each year of study will cost approximately a further R10,000 for master s studies and R12,000 for doctoral studies International students (excluding Africa) an additional foreign levy of approximately R5 000 per year Please note that these fees are approximate indications only and are applicable for every study year payable in full at the time of registration and re-registration Bursaries - Limited bursaries are available for research master s and doctoral degrees - A qualifying mark of 60% on honours or master s level in the case of doctoral studies is the minimum requirement for application - but each application will be assessed on a case by case basis - The funding is limited and applications should therefore be made as soon as possible at the Directorate for Student Funding on dsf@unisa.ac.za - Funding is available for both national and international students - Please note that the awarding of bursaries is entirely discretionary - Bursaries must be re-applied for on an annual basis Eduloan People employed in government departments may apply for assistance with study fees if they meet the following criteria: - they must be in the direct employ of the SA Government or a permanent member of the SANDF - they can apply for themselves, or sponsor their spouses/children under their guardianship - the loan instalment may not exceed 25% of their basic salary The financial assistance is administered by Eduloan. Should you wish to not re-register for a year and interrupt your studies, this must be discussed with your supervisor, application for such made online, on the prescribed form as soon as the registration period begins, and permission to defer received in writing from the university before the closing date for re-registration. While you are awaiting feedback from Unisa we suggest that you begin considering your research proposal and start with the basic structure of your proposal. More information and guidelines will be provided to you once you have been accepted to Unisa and assigned a contact person/supervisor. It will be beneficial to you at that point to have a considered view of the direction your research proposal will take. my Choice @ Unisa 2012 71

The research proposal What is a research proposal? A research proposal is a document that outlines your research question and research objectives, the methodology you will use and how you will conduct the research in order to answer your research question. The research proposal is a planning document and captures the thinking and logic of your approach to the study. Before you begin to write the research proposal there are a number of key steps you need to take in preparation. 1 Transform your idea into a research question and conduct a preliminary literature review to learn what other researchers have been studying, as it pertains to your research question. 2 Provide a clear indication on what you intend to do and how you will do the research. Clarify why the research is necessary and provide specific motivation for your interest in this area of study. 3 Define the scope and limitations of your research. 72

Giving due consideration to these before meeting with your supervisor is essential to making the progress necessary for obtaining the ultimate approvals for your research. Even though still in draft form, this exercise will give you a good indication of the viability of your proposed subject. Consider: a draft title a problem statement or question the research objective (which answers the statement or question) definitions and descriptions of the terminology and key concepts proposed a scope definition limitations of the proposed study background to the study an overview of proposed literature sources a description of the research plan and time frame an explanation of the research methodology Five golden rules for success Consider deeply your personal motivations for embarking on postgraduate studies and ensure that they are strong enough to keep you firmly on your path Your supervisor is a wealth of information use them wisely When in doubt, ask avoid assumption at all cost Maintain momentum Remain sharply focused, but receptive to an evolution of your original concept my Choice @ Unisa 2012 73
