Medical Sonography Admissions Requirements 2014-2015
SOUTH PIEDMONT COMMUNITY COLLEGE HEALTH PROGRAMS ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS Below are the general admissions requirements for all health programs followed by the program specific requirements. Please keep in mind that admission to all health programs is a two-step process. The Medical Sonography program is accredited by JRC-DMS and CAAHEP, Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Contact CAAHEP at 1361 Park Street, Clearwater, FL 33756 or call 727-210-2350 for questions regarding accreditation. Step 1: Complete your SPCC Admissions File 1. Complete the SPCC Application for Admission Submit an application for admission online at www.spcc.edu. If you already have a CFNC account, use your login information to fill out SPCC s application. If you do not have a CFNC account, you will create one as the first step of the application. Keep track of your account information. You may apply to only one health program. 2. Submit official high school, high school equivalency, or adult high school transcript It is your responsibility to request transcripts and pay any applicable fees. Official transcripts should be mailed directly from the issuing institution/agency to SPCC. Unofficial (student-issued/faxed/emailed) transcripts will not be accepted. 3. Submit official transcripts from all colleges listed on your application A Request for Transcript Evaluation Form must be completed and sent to the Registrar for evaluation of transfer credit. General Education credits over 10 years old can be appealed through the Transfer Credit Appeal process. All foreign transcripts (secondary and post-secondary) must be evaluated by an authorized evaluation company at the student s expense. To evaluate foreign transcripts, the transcript, course descriptions, and the grade system must be translated. 4. Prepare for and take the College Placement Test (CPT) You have one opportunity to take the CPT (Reading, Math and Computer Diagnostics). The initial test is free. Students are strongly encouraged to thoroughly review test study material and use our test preparatory services. Visit the Testing Center webpage for study resources. Reading, Math, and Computer diagnostic scores are good for five years. Accuplacer Reading, Sentence Skills, Computer Competency, Arithmetic, and Algebra scores are good for five (5) years. All students are required to take the CPT unless exempt by a waiver. High school graduates within five (5) years of enrolling that meet certain college ready requirements (Multiple Measures). 2
SAT scores of at least 500 on Critical Reading and Writing and 500 on Mathematics will exempt student from the CPT. ACT scores of at least 22 on Reading and 18 on English and at least 22 on Mathematics will exempt student from CPT. Completion of college-level English and math (with a grade of C or higher) from a regionally accredited institution within 10 years of enrolling. Completion of Developmental courses in English and math (with a grade of C or higher) within 3 years of application packet deadline. Completion of a Bachelor s degree or higher. Appropriate scores on Advanced Placement (AP) or College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams. SPCC must receive an official score report from ACT, the College Board, or from the college where the Diagnostic was taken. SPCC must receive official high school and/or college transcripts for any waivers related to course credit or degree completion. Students submitting a Transfer Credit Appeal will have to take the CPT even if a waiver is awarded. 5. Complete the New Student Orientation online View the online orientation video at: http://www.spcc.edu/orientation-mp4.php. Flash Player is required. At the end, you will be asked to answer a few questions correctly and then enter your personal information. Step 2: Medical Sonography Admission Requirements 1. Have valid required College Placement Test scores or appropriate developmental coursework completed within 3 years of program deadline. 2. Attend mandatory How to Apply to Health Program Workshop offered at various times on both campus. To reserve your seat, contact Enrollment Services. The workshop is valid for that academic year (July 1 to June 30). After your SPCC admission application is submitted, attend this workshop as soon as possible. 3. Completion of all general education classes in the Medical Sonography program within the last 10 years of the program deadline. BIO 163 - Basic Anatomy & Physiology COM 110, COM 120, COM 140, or COM 231 Communication or Public Speaking ENG 111 Writing and Inquiry Humanities Elective 3 Credit Hours MAT 152 or MAT 171/171A Statistical Methods I or Precalculus Algebra PHY 110/110A or PHY 151 Conceptual Physics or College Physics I PSY 150 or SOC 210 General Psychology or Introduction to Sociology *Students that have completed Anatomy & Physiology I and II will have those courses calculated into the GPA in place of BIO 163- Basic Anatomy and Physiology. 3
4. All course work must be at least a C ; and your program GPA must be at least a 3.0 to be considered for admission. 5. Current certification in a patient-care related field such as CNA, EMT, MLA, or equivalent. All students must pass state exams and be listed on the appropriate registry. For more information on becoming a CNA or EMT, visit http://www.spcc.edu, Career Development & Continuing Education, Medical Professions. Note: The Nurse Assistant I program must be state-approved with theory, lab, and clinical components. Fast-track NAI programs do not qualify for admission into the Medical Sonography program at SPCC. 6. Current CPR certification, to include first aid, child, infant, and adult CPR. This course is available through SPCC s Career Development & Continuing Education Division, at http://www.spcc.edu, Career Development & Continuing Education, Medical Professions, CPR & First Aid Certification. 7. Completion of the Introduction to Medical Sonography (non-credit) Class offered through SPCC s Career Development & Continuing Education Division, at http://www.spcc.edu, Career Development & Continuing Education, Medical Professions, Introduction to Medical Sonography. Students must meet pre-requisites before enrolling: (1) Enrolled as a current SPCC student with Medical Sonography listed as major; (2) Meet the required CPT cut scores or completion of developmental courses. For further information, refer to paragraph What are the required CPT scores? on page 5. To register, call 704-290-5280. 8. Take the TEAS V test and submit a copy of your TEAS V score with your packet. TEAS V scores are valid for two years prior to the application packet deadline. Contact the Testing Center at the LLP or OCH campus to set up an appointment for this test. (See page 11 for Testing Center Permission Form TEAS.) TEAS scores not taken at SPCC must be officially transferred from ATI Testing and must be the same version administered at SPCC (TEAS V). You must have at least a 65 Adjusted Individual Total Score on TEAS V to be considered for Admission. 4
SOUTH PIEDMONT COMMUNITY COLLEGE MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY PROGRAM Application Period Ends February 28, 2015 How do I apply for admission to the Medical Sonography program? Complete Step 1 and 2 listed on pages 2, 3, and 4. When you have completed both steps, collect only the required documents listed below and put them into a 9 x12 envelope with your full name, SPCC ID, and program printed clearly in the upper right corner. Your packet should only include: Medical Sonography Application pages 9 and 10. Printout from the registry to prove current certification in patient-related care field. Copy of current CPR card or certification document. Copy of TEAS V test results (Minimum 65 total adjusted score). Letter from employer on letterhead confirming 6 months employment for points, if applicable. Letter from instructor on high school letterhead confirming completion of Allied Health Science I & II or Medical Science I & II for points, if applicable. When are students admitted into the Medical Sonography program? Health programs at SPCC have limited enrollment and a competitive admissions process. Students are admitted into the Medical Sonography program beginning summer session each year. Students who submit a complete application packet by the February 28 deadline will be given priority consideration for admission for the summer semester class. NOTE: If the number of qualified applicants meeting the February 28 deadline is not sufficient to fill all program openings, complete application packets will continue to be accepted until the maximum enrollment number is met. What do I need to do to be considered for entry into the Medical Sonography program? To be considered for admission into the Medical Sonography program, you must meet all requirements listed on pages 2, 3, and 4 and submit a complete admission packet by the deadline. What are the required CPT scores for the Medical Sonography program? Combined Reading and Sentence Skills score 151 or higher Computer Skills: 80 Arithmetic: 55 (MAT 060) Algebra: 75 (MAT 070 and MAT 080) OR Mastery in DMA 010 through DMA 080 CPT test scores are valid for five (5) years. If you do not meet these required CPT scores, you must enroll in and complete the appropriate developmental course(s). A waiver may be used in place of some or all of these requirements. 5
What is a TEAS test? The TEAS V (Test of Essential Academic Skills) measures basic essential academic skills related to success in Allied Health programs in English, reading, mathematics, and science. For more information on the TEAS test, go to www.atitesting.com. TEAS study guides are available at SPCC bookstores or at www.atitesting.com for purchase. How do I take the TEAS test? Contact the SPCC Testing Center for a TEAS test appointment (see page 11 for contact information). The TEAS test may be taken once every three (3) months, for a cost of $45 (fee subject to change) per test (payable to SPCC s Business Office on the day of the test). Complete the Testing Center Permission Form TEAS (see page 11), attach the receipt for the testing fee, and bring both to the Testing Center on the day of your appointment. Be sure to bring a photo ID to your testing appointment! You must have at least a 65 Adjusted Individual Total Score on TEAS V to be considered for admission. NOTE: Calculators and outside study aids are not allowed during the test. Use of these or refusal to follow all Testing Center rules will result in test disqualification. Is there a waiting list? There is no waiting list to enter any SPCC health program. Students are chosen for the Medical Sonography program based on ranking of points. Points are based on (1) TEAS V score; (2) completion of BIO 271 with a grade of C or higher within the past 10 years; (3) completion of MED 121 and 122 with a grade of C or higher within the past 10 years; (4) completion of Allied Health Science I & II or Medical Science I & II (these are high school courses) with a grade of B or higher within the last 24 months; (5) a minimum of 6 months of paid patient-care work experience within the last 5 years (part or full-time). You must have at least a 65 Adjusted Individual Total Score on TEAS V to be considered for admission. If you are not accepted into the program for the upcoming summer session, your packet will be shredded. Please make a copy of your packet documentation prior to submission. Enrollment Services is not able to copy your packet for you. How will I know if I m accepted into the Medical Sonography program? You will receive a letter from the Admissions Office within a month of the program application deadline notifying you of your provisional acceptance into the program. ONCE YOU RECEIVE THIS LETTER, you must do the following: (1) Attend the Medical Sonography orientation session. (2) Submit the Student Medical Form for North Carolina Community College System Institutions. Applicants accepted for admission into the Medical Sonography program may be required to complete a criminal background check and a drug screen after notification of acceptance and prior to participation in the onsite clinical portion of the program. Based on the results of the criminal background check and the drug screen, hospitals or clinical facilities where you will participate in onsite training may deny you access to their facility, resulting in your inability to complete the clinical portion of the Medical Sonography program. If you are unable to complete the clinical portion of your training, you will be unable to progress in the program. 6
How do I calculate my GPA? Only use your completed general education courses that are required for your program. If you ve repeated a course, use the highest grade for calculations. Transfer credit is calculated using the grade earned at your previous college. Grades and credit hours can be obtained from your GO! account. Please use the blank GPA calculation chart below to determine your GPA. To earn points in addition to your TEAS score, you may provide proof of completion of the courses listed below to earn points based on the course grade. The points for MED 121 and MED 122 are averaged. This form, along with your SPCC s Business Office receipt showing payment of the $45 (fee subject to change) TEAS testing fee, must be presented to the Testing Specialist before you will be admitted. In order to take the TEAS, you must have a valid ATI login (username and password). Setup your account prior to your test date and bring your account information with you to your testing appointment. Details on setting up an ATI account are on the Testing Center webpage at www.spcc.edu. Before taking the TEAS test, you must agree to the following: I have met all CPT scores and/or developmental requirements for my chosen program of study.
