ENVISION Motivation and Objectives Environmental Models Increasingly significant in decision making: Diagnose and forecast State of the art: the art: Static, centralized and closed systems, with tightly coupled components, isolated systems with limited audience (i.e. experts) ENVISION aimed to provide a dynamic, open, distributed and shared environmental modelling infrastructure Enables a high level of model reuse easily accessible for both experts and non experts Three pilot use cases: Oil Spill Risk Analysis Landslide Hazard Risk Assessment Real time Monitoring of Floods Evolution in Trans boundary Context 2
What does ENVISION offer to the environmental community? Tools to create Flood Monitoring scenario websites The RealTime Flood Monitoringpilot i il case contains: Data services: Water level, water flow, water level and flow forecasts Processing and model services: Outflow computation, dam evacuation plan, inflow prognosis, water flow computation Users may: Compose workflows, run workflows as simulations, visualize and analyze data and results What will be the end result and how will the stakeholders use/interact with the platform and the resulting end user website? End results will be Real time Monitoring of Floods Evolution Danube river, Iron Gates area related scenario websites These will provide decision support for people involved in water management at Iron Gates Authorities,hydro hd power company, consulting companies, research institutes, t response agencies 8
Oil Spill Pilot Case Whatare the challenges? Oil spills may have severe ecological and socio economic effects Understanding fate and effects of oil spills is key to risk mitigation and response management To this end, a number of oil drift models have been developed typically oriented towards specific regions Adapting an oil drift model to another region is often difficult, due to differences in driving data's structure and semantics Moreover, coupling oil drift models to other models (e.g. for biological effects) is difficult for the same reason (non standard interfaces) Who are the stakeholders? This pilot case is implemented using SINTEF's oil drift model OSCAR Other organizations that may be involved are oil companies, coast guards, consulting companies, researchers and the general public 9

End results will be oil spill related scenario websites These will provide decision support for people involved in oil spill risk management and oil spill response Authorities, oil companies, consulting companies, research institutes, response agencies Supports decision making on strategic, tactical, and operational levels 11
Landslide Pil t Case Pilot C What are the challenges? Landslide has severe impact to the economical life of the Guadeloupe Island Hard to predict important instabilities to plan road closures (protecting drivers is crucial) A methodology was developed in 2006 by public institutions and BRGM to make these predictions Allow non technical operators to manipulate the models used by the methodology is often difficult due to their complexity Use off externall data d sources (for (f meteorological l i l forecast) f ) is i most off the h time i not possible ibl and prediction of instabilities are less precise and with more false positive Who are the stakeholders? This pilot case is implemented using BRGM's landslide model using Gardenia, Alice, Bora and Armagedom Other organizations that may be involved are public p companies p and the ggeneral authorities,, researchers,, transport public 12

Tools to find new data, models and services Search in semantic catalogue using natural language, reasoning facilities for searching Tools to combine environmental services to compute more complex models Drag n drop of environmental services, mediation Tools and components to create websites for publication of results No need to be ICT skilled user, drag n drop (WYSIWYG interface What You See Is What You Get), quick configuration What will be the end result and how will the stakeholders use/interact with the platform and the resulting end user website? End results will be information websites on landslide hazards This will provide different levels of information Decision support for local authorities (let the road open or close it?) Information for citizens (is there any risks today for the road to be closed?) Results of studies on the landslides domain for researchers Information always up to date with the execution on demand 14
ENVISION Added Value for the Environmental Community What added value could ENVISION platform bring? A single collaborative Web based platform exposed as a service/portal for environmental data exchange (real time, historical, forecasts), models sharing and models composition. Who could be the stakeholders? Organizations collecting data and offering services (e.g. hydrologic institutions), emergency situations inspectorates, local councils and general public (citizens), etc. What kind of information could be made available through the ENVISION platform? Environmental models, geographical data, real time or near real time data collected from heterogeneous existing sources (e.g. independent sensors, weather stations, SCADA systems, river information systems, etc). How could the information be used in the ENVISION platform? Environmental Community Sensor dt data, geographical dt data, and models, are wrapped instandardized di dformats as Open Geospatial lconsortium (OGC) Web Services. Metadata is attached to the OGC services in a user friendly manner. Data/services can be searched/discovered in a semantically enriched way. Models and data exposed as services can be aggregated as service compositions in intuitive and user friendly environment. Aggregated models can be executed and results made available as new services. Data and results of service executions are visualized on maps and charts. Realtime notifications are specified and alerts generated. Community Websites are configured and published with access restrictions. 15
