On December 4, Dr. Liu Jilan, HIMSS Executive of the Greater China Region and Lead Consultant of JCI, and Mr. John Hoyt, HIMSS Global Executive Vice President, visited Zhongshan Hospital for certification assessment. Professor Zhu Tongyu welcomed the party on behalf of all the staff members and briefed them on the overall situation of the hospital. Mr. Yin Yiqing, Director of the Hospital s IT Center, accompanied the two experts during their assessment procedures and introduced them to the digital systems of various departments, including the wards, surgical intensive care units, pharmacy intravenous admixture services, and blood bank. After a day of field assessment, the two assessors announced that the hospital s IT implementation had reached stage six in their EMRAM assessment model. In 2003, the hospital s technical team, led by then-director of the IT Center Mr. Zhang Weiguo, started to develop digital systems for the HIS, pharmacies, blood bank, out-patient and emergency services, and electronic medical records. The team managed to connect the hospital s independently developed image management system with other PACS systems. Also, with the deployment of 3G networks and Android-based operating systems, doctors were able to have real-time access to electronic medical records outside the hospital, while the wifi-based mobile medical care terminal allowed doctors to recheck their medical orders at any time, achieving closed-loop healthcare management.
HIMSS EMRAM assessment system involves eight stages (stage zero to seven). The evaluation by HIMSS targets the completeness of health IT systems as well as the actual operation of IT systems in healthcare services. At present, no more than twelve percent of the hospitals in the world have been certified as stage six organizations. In mainland China, only seven hospitals have reached the standards of a stage six or seven hospital. And the solar term of Guyu, which literally means grain rain, is the 6th solar term. It actually begins when the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 30 and ends when it reaches the longitude of 45. It more often refers in particular to the day when the sun is exactly at the celestial longitude of 30. In the Gregorian calendar, it usually begins around April 20 and ends around May 5. The Shangsi Festival, which always comes around the solar term of Guyu, is an ancient Chinese festival celebrated on the third day of the third month of the Chinese calendar. So this festival is also known as the Double Third Festival. During the festival people would go for an outing by the water, picnic, pluck orchids, and young people would date their lovers. It is a specific day for invoking cleansing rituals to prevent disease and get rid of bad luck. The day is also traditionally considered to be a possible birthday of the Yellow Emperor (Huang Di), who is the initial ancestor of the Chinese nation. The ancient traditions of Shangsi is mostly celebrated by a few local communities today, such as the ancient county of Xinye which holds elaborate ancestor worship ceremonies on this day. In Jin Dynasty (265-420 A.D.), a great calligrapher Wang Xizhi (303-361 A.D.) mentioned this festival in his famous work Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Poems, written in regard to the Orchid Pavilion Gathering during the Six Dynasties era.
