Admissions Process for Georgia Perimeter College Dental Hygiene Program *******Before submitting an application to the dental hygiene program, STUDENTS MUST FIRST COMPLETE STEPS A, B, AND C.******** STEP A. COMPLETE THE GEORGIA PERIMETER COLLEGE ADMISSION PROCESS BY THE ANNOUNCED DEADLINE: 1. Apply for admission to Georgia Perimeter College. a. Students must submit their application and supporting documents (SAT/ACT scores, immunization records, high school/college transcripts, etc.) by the posted application deadline. GPC application deadline is posted on www.gpc.edu. b. Students should indicate on the College application form that their major is Pre-Dental Hygiene. 2. Be accepted by Georgia Perimeter College. a. Students must apply to, be accepted, and receive an acceptance letter from Georgia Perimeter College prior to applying to the Dental Hygiene Program. Students who miss the GPC application deadline CANNOT be considered for admission into the Dental Hygiene Program. STEP B. COMPLETE PRE-REQUISITES PRIOR TO APPLICATION TO THE DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM. Three science pre-requisites must be completed and transcripts transferred, prior to application deadline. Please review the attached Science Chart as an easy reference. 1. College Chemistry Pre-requisite Provide documentation (official transcript) of completion of CHEM 1151 And CHEM 1151L (Lab)or an equivalent course from another institution (or successfully passing the chemistry exemption exam) within the last seven years. 2. College Biology 1611 Pre-requisite Provide documentation (official transcript) of completion of BIOL 1611 (Human Anatomy and Physiology, Part 1) And BIOL 1611L (Lab) within the last 7 years.
3. College Biology 1612 Pre-requisite Provide documentation (official transcript) of completion of BIOL1612 (Human Anatomy and Physiology, Part 2) And BIOL 1612L (Lab) within the last 7 years. STEP C GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES, COLLEGE SCIENCE, COLLEGE CHEMISTRY and COLLEGE BIOLOGY GRADE POINT AVERAGE. In order to be competitive for consideration into the Dental Hygiene Program it is strongly encouraged that all applicants have a of 2.5 or higher for courses required in the Dental Hygiene Program of Study. Applicants who earn grades lower than a C in Core I Area A, or in any of the required science courses in the Dental Hygiene Program of Study are not eligible for admission to the program (the course must be retaken with a grade of C or better earned). Additionally, All science courses taken prior to admissions and after admissions to the Dental Hygiene Program must be completed with a grade of C or better in order to meet graduation requirements. Please see the GPC course catalogue for GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS. 1. Related Dental Hygiene Experience A minimum of 2 hours of documented observation of a dental hygienist or volunteering time in the field and/or working in a dental office is required for consideration for admission to the program. Applicants must include a Shadowing Form stating the name, address, and telephone number of the person with whom you observed and the number of hours observed. The Shadowing Form must be submitted as part of the application to document your dental hygiene observation or experience. It is strongly recommended that applicants acquaint themselves with a variety of dental hygiene settings. Please note there will not be any points given in the area of shadowing. All applicants are required to shadow for 2 hours. You may find the form at this link or on our website under Shadowing Form. 2. Exit from all learning support courses or requirements. Students in ESL and/or Learning Support (Developmental Studies) must complete the required classes for these areas prior to application.
3. Admission points are accumulated based upon General Education CORE, College Science, College Chemistry and College Biology Grade Point Averages (). Therefore, some general education courses must be completed prior to application in order to accumulate a general education. APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO THE DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM Submit application to the Dental Hygiene Program by the deadline which is posted on the Dental Hygiene Website either in person or via certified mail. Since the application deadline falls just after a holiday period, please plan for mail deliver accordingly. Applications received after the posted deadline will not be considered for admission. Selection Criteria and Point System For Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program The following information summarizes the criteria used by the GPC Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee in selecting applicants for admission into the program. If a course is repeated and/or transferred from an institution other than Georgia Perimeter College, the grades will be averaged to determine the cumulative in each category.
Area B. Work Experience and educational experience 2 To qualify for points for work experience applicants must provide the following: 1. A letter from a current or former employer confirming at least one year of professional experience in a dental or medical related career field. 2. A certificate/diploma showing successful completion of a dental or medical related program. Area C. Other 7 points 1. One point (1) will be given for each science course from the Dental Hygiene General Education core (CHEM1151, CHEM1152, BIOL1611, BIOL1612 and BIOL1913) completed with a grade of B or better on the first attempt prior to application to the dental hygiene program. The course must have been completed within the last seven years to receive these additional points. (5 point maximum) 2. One point (1) will be given for each science course completed from the Dental Hygiene General Education core (CHEM 1152, and BIOL 1913) before applying to the program. (2 points maximum ). Additional Point 1 point The dental hygiene department will be holding information sessions to discuss the admissions process and what to expect after you have applied to the Dental Hygiene Program. ACCEPTANCE POLICY Admission to the program is not guaranteed. Admission is dependent upon the quality of each applicant who applies. All applicants who have completed the entire application process will be ranked according to their point accumulation. The top 32 applicants with the highest point accumulation will be accepted in order on a seat available basis. The remaining ranked applicants will become alternates, but are not guaranteed placement in the program. Applicants will be notified by certified mail of either acceptance to the program or alternate status. Please do not contact the dental hygiene program to ascertain your position on the alternate list. This ranking is confidential and this information will not be released. If a position does not become available in the year that an applicant is an alternate, the applicant must reapply to the program in subsequent years. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that the GPC Dental Hygiene Department has accurate contact information. Acceptance and alternate letters sent by certified mail must be claimed. Acceptance and alternate letters returned to the college will result in the offer being withdrawn. To ensure receipt of the application, we recommend you utilize US Certified Mail with return receipt requested. Information on the status of your application will not be released via the telephone or e-mail except to confirm your application is complete. The GPC Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee reserves the right to change selection criteria on an annual basis as needed to improve the selection of applicants who will be successful in completing the Dental Hygiene program.
