WHITE PAPER: Egenera Cloud Suite for EMC VSPEX The Proven Solution For Building Cloud Services
Build, Manage and Protect Your Cloud with the VSPEX Certified Egenera Cloud Suite Today, organizations are accelerating their usage of cloud computing as the delivery mechanism for IT services. This includes both private clouds that are giving internal users self-service access to shared infrastructure resources, or public clouds that are being used to provide easy access to external compute and software services. In the past year, cloud computing has advanced as early adopters move from test and development workloads to deployment of more enterprise and business critical applications. As that has occurred, uptime, service levels and operational simplicity have become more critical. Companies are confronting the challenge of evolving their existing, legacy IT infrastructure into an agile, automated cloud. EMC VSPEX Proven Infrastructure was designed as a converged infrastructure package that tackles this exacting challenge and helps companies with their journey to the cloud. EMC VSPEX includes cloud-certified solutions to deliver easy to deploy and simple to manage as a Service solutions. Fast Growth in Cloud Services Research firm IDC reports that data center managers expect to allocate nearly 50% of their budgets to running services in the cloud (public and private) by 2013. Driving this transition is the need to provide users with more immediate access to computing resources, and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) through greater automation and elasticity of services. Additionally, IDC tracked converged infrastructure as a $16B industry in 2010 growing to $64B by 2015. Of that, approximately 50% is associated with software, 30% services and 20% hardware value. (IDC Directions 2012) Gartner reports that worldwide spending on public cloud services is growing at over 28% per year with cloud spending in the US at $60B USD by 2016. The fastest growing segment of cloud computing is Cloud Management, which over the next 5 years, Gartner expects to grow at over 40% CAGR. The Egenera Cloud Suite is a converged infrastructure and cloud management and brokering platform that makes its easier for customers to transition to the cloud and to build, manage and protect applications running across public, private and hybrid cloud environments. Both service providers and enterprises are building their cloud services using Egenera Cloud Suite. They rely on it to deliver: The highest levels of availability to meet stringent service level agreements (SLAs) The ability to incorporate both physical and virtual servers to support the most performance-intensive applications, including those that are not easily virtualized An open solution, which supports servers from all the major hardware vendors and server virtualization from the leading providers Verifiable, N+1 disaster recovery capability that is easy to implement and test Support for business and mission-critical applications as well as test, development and less-demanding environments.
Now there are even more reasons to trust your cloud service to Egenera: it is EMC VSPEX Labs Validated. This designation is a result of Egenera Cloud Suite having passed rigorous testing for functionality and compliance with EMC VSPEX. VSPEX pre-validated and modular architectures are built with proven bestof-breed technologies to create complete virtualization solutions that enable informed decisions in the hypervisor, compute and networking layers. Egenera VSPEX Components Overview PAN Cloud Director PAN Cloud Director is a complete cloud management platform. The software provides users an easy way to request and consume IT, and gives datacenter operators an out of the box solution to create user accounts, design IT solutions, track usage and arrange for billing and usage reporting. Cloud Director works by abstracting the IT infrastructure and presenting that infrastructure in a digital service catalog. This catalog contains all the components of the data center physical servers, virtual servers, storage, switches, firewalls, hypervisors, operating systems, applications, back up services and more. Users leverage the catalog and the associated design palette to literally drag, drop and connect all the components of the desired IT service. They can also easily configure their services with high availability and disaster recovery options. Once the design is complete, users can deploy their application solutions with the click of a mouse. In this way, solution architects, applications owners and other credentialed users will be able to design, configure and deploy complex, three-tiered solutions. Leveraging Cloud Director capabilities for account management, usage tracking, billing, invoicing and customer support enables organizations to provide cost effective cloud services such as Infrastructure as a Service, Software as a Service, Desktop as a Service, Disaster Recovery as a Service and more. 6 Egenera Cloud Suite for EMC VSPEX

This enables users to secure the IT resources that best match their application needs and budget requirements. PAN Manager Software: Rapid Deployment for Dynamic Scalability PAN Manager lets you build a highly resilient and flexible computing infrastructure on which to host your cloud services. It provisions, manages and protects IT infrastructure with unique virtualization capabilities, powerful management software and policy-based automation. PAN Manager includes N+1 high availability and verifiable disaster recovery as integral parts of the solution. Based on the patented Processing Area Network (PAN) technology, PAN Manager s unique approach works by abstracting IT infrastructure to create manageable resource pools of servers, I/O, networking, and storage. This level of abstraction delivers flexibility and the ability to dynamically move workloads in the event of an outage, resource failure or purely to enable scalability. Using the PAN Manager GUI, individual resources from these pools can be assigned a profile or personality and you can pre-define entire physical, hypervisor host servers, or mixed server configurations (including I/O, network and storage). Each profile contains the application configuration and service level requirements. Unlike products that limit you to virtual machines, PAN Manager provisions both physical servers and/or virtual host servers so you can allocate the ideal resource for any application. By defining a server s profile in software, you can then apply profiles to any resource, allowing workloads to be dynamically allocated on demand. Individual servers, or complete networked environments, can be provisioned as needed in minutes with just a few mouse clicks. N+1 High Availability With PAN Manager s N+1 high availability you can allocate a server to take over the workload from any failed server. This could be a server running a hypervisor (it doesn t matter which one) or it could be a physical server it makes no difference to PAN Manager. All that is required is the CPU and memory resources from that server. This feature allows for automatic and seamless failover from one server to another without manual intervention. 8 Egenera Cloud Suite for EMC VSPEX
Verifiable Disaster Recovery With the DR functionality built into PAN Manager Enterprise you can failover entire environments, whether that is between racks in the same datacenter or across geographically dispersed datacenters. By having this level of abstraction, the server definitions can quickly be applied to the resources wherever they are located. This also makes it easy to test, and verify, DR plans. As the process can be automated and initiated very quickly, those servers can be running other workloads and applications when not needed for DR, which eliminates the need for expensive idle hardware resources. 9 Egenera Cloud Suite for EMC VSPEX
Facilitating Multi-Tenancy and Secure Boundaries with Logical Environment Definitions PAN Manager software includes a feature called LPANs (Logical Processing Area Networks). This allows the computing resources (server, storage, network and more) to be grouped together for one particular customer or for administrative purposes. This enables multi-tenancy, with the ability to host multiple customer environments securely on the same hardware platform and still deliver high availability and DR services. LPANs can specify common failover servers which reduces infrastructure overhead, allowing customers to have high SLAs at lower cost a distinct competitive advantage for cloud providers. Summary Using Egenera software in the VSPEX reference architecture speeds the deployment and simplifies the management of cloud services for both enterprises and service providers. Egenera Cloud Suite provides unmatched flexibility in terms of supporting both physical and virtual servers, different hypervisors and hardware from all of the major server vendors. Its integrated N+1 high availability and verifiable disaster recovery simplify the usually complex process of implementing and testing HA and DR, and reduce costs significantly compared to other approaches.
