LOUIS BERGER COMPANY AND BERGER FAMILY SUPPORT FOR EDUCATION Within the broader scope of the Louis Berger company and employee giving, education is one of our special focus areas and we are proud to continue founder Dr. Louis Berger s legacy of supporting personal and professional development through education. The Berger Family and the Louis Berger company support educational endeavors around the world, from Rutgers University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology in New Jersey to Kabul University, the American University of Afghanistan, the International Road Federation and others. LOUIS BERGER COMPANY SUPPORT Louis Berger Graduate Fellows Program, Rutgers University In 2009, the company established the Louis Berger Graduate Fellows Program at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Following an application and evaluation process, up to four Bloustein School graduate students are selected who are working toward master s degrees in city and regional planning or in public policy for a comprehensive fellowship award that provides financial support during their second year of study. Each fellow also completes a full time summer internship assisting Louis Berger project teams on infrastructure assignments around the world. Since 2010, 24 Bloustein graduate students have been awarded fellowships. As part of their internship experience, Louis Berger Fellows for 2015 participated as team members working in France, Panama, China, and Jamaica. The fellowships are funded annually by the company. Louis Berger Group Endowed Scholarship, New Jersey Institute of Technology In 2013, the Dr. Louis Berger Endowed Fund was established by the company to provide financial assistance to NJIT undergraduate students majoring in Civil or Environmental Engineering. Recipients follow an application process to be considered. Kenneth Torres is the 2015 recipient of the Louis Berger Group Endowed Scholarship. This is a company funded endowment. December 2012: $100,000 December 2013: $100,000 December 2014: $100,000 Louis Berger Graduate Internship and Fellowship Program, New Jersey Institute of Technology In 2014, NJIT, in cooperation with the Louis Berger Group, established a six year special graduate internship and fellowship program for students pursuing a Master s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Engineering Management, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering. Areas of focus include environmental services, transit, highways and bridges, aviation, and energy, as well as economics, policy, and management activities. This program gives graduate students the opportunity to receive tuition funding while pursuing a Master s degree at NJIT as well as to conduct professional work with Louis Berger during summer internships at one of its international offices. The 2015 recipients are Said Ouabi and Walid Bouabid. This is a company funded fellowship program. 2015: $26,458 2016: $27,554 2017: $28,695 2018: $29,883 2019: $31,120 2020: $32,408 Science and Technology Enrichment Program (STEP), New Jersey Institute of Technology In 2013, in an effort to encourage high school students to pursue higher education, Louis Berger provided funding to the development of STEP, which aims to foster students appreciation of science and technology. The program, which is taught by NJIT faculty, offers courses like Computer Animation and Introduction to Robotics: Design & Programming. A total of 400 students have graduated in May 2013, December 2013, April 2014 and May 2015. Funding has ended and new corporate sponsors are being sought to continue the program. This was a company funded program. 2013: $100,000 Celebration Scholarship Funding Raising Event, New Jersey Institute of Technology Since 2013, the Louis Berger company has supported NJIT s Celebration scholarship fund raising event with a donation to the annual event. The Louis Berger Cultural Center, The American University of Afghanistan The Louis Berger company has been a major partner of the American University of Afghanistan since its founding in 2006. It is the first and only private, not for profit, non partisan, co educational institution of higher learning in the country. The firm also provided a donation to establish the Louis Berger Cultural Center, a modular space designed to host exhibits highlighting Afghanistan s rich cultural history. No information is available about this commitment Friends of the American University of Afghanistan The Louis Berger company also supports the American University of Afghanistan via Friends of the American University of Afghanistan by attending the International Public Service Awards Dinner October 7, 2015: $1,000 DR. LOUIS BERGER AND FREDRIC BERGER FAMILY SUPPORT Louis Berger International Scholar Award, New Jersey Institute of Technology In 1997, Dr. Louis Berger established the Louis Berger International Scholar Award at NJIT. The award is intended for students pursuing graduate education in fields consistent with the worldwide activities of the company. These fields cover most majors offered by NJIT but students in Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Transportation, and Management generally have preference. Priority is given to a new MS or PhD international student who enrolls for the first time in the fall semester. To date, the program has provided scholarships to 10 students. Xiaolu Wang, a doctoral student at NJIT, was named the 2013 recipient of the Louis Berger International Scholar Award; Zhong Sun, a Master s candidate in mechanical engineering from Shanghai, China was named the 2014 Award recipient; and Omoghene Ovuakporie, a Master s candidate in architecture from Nigeria, is the 2015 award recipient. This is a Berger Family endowment. January 1997: $300,000 Louis Berger Fellowship, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) The Berger family personally supports higher education through the Louis Berger Fellowship Fund at MIT. The fellowship provides financial assistance to graduate and Ph.D. students who have demonstrated high academic achievement. On December 21, 2013, the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering announced the recipients of this year s fellowship: Nicolas Bain and Bing Qiuyi Li, both Ph.D. candidates studying structural mechanics. This is a Berger Family endowment. 1995 (Last gift): $235,000

Louis Berger Junior Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Northwestern University In September 2013, Northwestern University welcomed Dr. George Wells as the Louis Berger Junior Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Wells received his B.S. and B.A. degrees from Rice University in 2004, where he first became interested in environmental engineering research while developing water treatment applications. Dr. Wells joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, where he completed his M.S. (2006) and Ph.D. (2011). Dr. Wells is exploring research topics within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, across the university, and with local industrial or public utility partners. This is a Berger Family endowment. Established: 1989 Louis Berger Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Tufts University The Louis Berger Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering was established in 1989 by Dr. Louis Berger. With his support Tufts has been able to encourage the creation of new knowledge, support discoveries in laboratories and classrooms, and foster a spirit of innovation across the university. Currently, Professor Steven C. Chapra, Ph.D. is the Berger Chair. Updates from the holder of the Louis Berger Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering are typically sent in the summer from the professorship holder, outlining key activities and accomplishments during the prior academic year. This is a Berger Family endowment. The Berger Family Technology Transfer Endowment, Tufts University The Fred Berger family is a member of the Friends of the Tisch Library at Tufts University. The Fred Berger Family Technology Transfer Endowment was established in 1995 and supports the Digital Design Studio at Tisch Library under Director Laura Wood. This is a Berger Family endowment. According to records of the IRF, amounts paid to the IRF Fellowship program is as follows: 1992: $10,000 contribution from The Louis Berger Group $5,000 personal contribution from Dr. Berger 1993: $5,000 contribution from The Louis Berger Group 1996: $1,000 personal contribution from Dr. Berger 2013: $175 contribution from The Louis Berger Group Through March 2014, IRF records don t show any other contributions made to the program. According to Carlos Marcenaro (2014), when he was on the Board of Directors, the company contributed $25,000 to the trust fund.

According to records of the SAME, there are two name scholarships attributed to Louis Berger. The two name scholarships represent one time payments/commitments (self sustaining) of a least $10,000 each and apply to the SAME New York City Post only. Only interest goes to scholarships (no principal); approximately 200 scholarships annually to students at 70 colleges and universities. There is no company involvement in selection of student scholars; schools make all selection decisions. The criteria for scholarships selection: the student must be a US citizen, enrolled as a full time student, and pursuing a degree in engineering or related discipline. Institutions receiving financial support from the Louis Berger scholarships are shown below. Louis Berger Scholarship Established October 1980 ($1,000 donated annually to Hofstra University) Louis Berger and Associates, Inc. Scholarship Established May 1998 ($1,000 donated annually to NJIT) October 12, 2015
