Weekly Anointing and Prayer After the 9:OOAM Mass each Sunday, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, for anyone who has the need to receive this sacrament. This is meant to include such concerns as upcoming diagnostic tests, limitations of aging, anxiety, depression, undue stress, addiction, etc. for all ages. Please gather in the pews at the front of church and the priest will be with you approximately 10 minutes after Mass is over. 2
Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 8, 2013 Church Stuff... The Ambo The word ambo derives from the Greek verb anabainein ( to go up ) and was the name given to the elevated platform from which the Scriptures were proclaimed in the large churches of the early Middle Ages. In smaller churches of the time, the priest and lector stood at the altar rail; only the bishop stood at the chair (the cathedra) for proclaiming and preaching. A later development saw elaborate, elevated pulpits attached to church pillars for better visibility and audibility. The liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962 1965) called for the location of the ambo to be a natural focal point for the assembly during the liturgy of the word. The ambo is a place for the act of proclamation. By its form and appearance it honors Christ present in the word, and hence evokes reverence and attentiveness when the word is sung or spoken from it. Here is the place for the proclamation of the Scripture readings, the leading of the singing of psalms, for preaching God s word and perhaps for leading prayers of intercession. All other announcements and speeches are to be made elsewhere. The ambo should be beautifully designed and carefully proportioned to suit its function not as a shrine for the lectionary, but as a cradle for the word that embodies the story of our salvation, the mystery of the word made flesh among us. Our ambo at St. Peter is crafted from the same material as the altar - Indiana limestone and black onyx marble. The design clearly mirroring the altar shows the connection between the Word of God and the sacrifice at the altar, the liturgy of the Word and the liturgy of the Eucharist. Its position in our sanctuary is prominent, visible, and near the altar. It is clearly a focal point. The Chair The third important piece of furniture within a Catholic sanctuary is the chair the presider s chair from which the prayers are lead and announcements are made. The first two important places within the Catholic sanctuary are, of course, the altar and the ambo. The ancient Latin word cathedra, used to designate the chair of a high-ranking civic official, was adopted by the early Christian church to refer to the cathedra or chair of the bishop. It was from the cathedra that the bishop presided at the liturgy and preached on the scriptures. Other chairs (sedilia) for attending priests and deacons were placed to the side. Later developments of church architecture saw the cathedra of the bishop elevated on a podium, and more throne-like in design. As parishes developed in the fourth century, a less ornate chair was used in the local church by the priest. The presider s or presidential chair soon became superfluous as the priest stood at the altar for the most of the liturgical action. The liturgical reform of the Vatican Council II has sought to recover the function of the chair of the presider. The materials and design of the chair should identify it as part of the particular place of worship. Its style should speak of the ministry of presiding, not of remoteness or prestige. Since we now have a fuller understanding of Christ s presence in the assembly of all the faithful, the presider s chair cannot signify privilege, but rather a sense of leadership in prayer, as well as the dignity and service that are inherent in Christian ministry. From this chair, the presider calls the people of God to prayer, joins them in attentiveness to the word, keeps with them moments of silence, leads them in petitions of forgiveness, invites them to profess their faith, lifts up their intercessions for every need and sends them forth with God s blessing. And although rarely done by anyone other than a bishop, the rubrics (rules, guidelines) allow preaching from the chair, too. 3 Our presider s chair at St. Peter matches the material of the other chairs/furnishings in our church and sanctuary. It is a larger chair than the others thus giving it a sense of prominence and attention. It is most definitely not throne-like but a significant chair from which prayers can be lead. It invites your attention. It is heavy, durable and substantial. It makes a statement of importance upon first appearance yet it does not overpower the altar. Like all the other furnishings and appointments in our church it follows the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and the guidelines for liturgical space. St. Peter Historical Tidbits With the completion of our new air handlers in our church air conditioning has returned and we are very grateful. Some have even complained that it is too cool in our church! I remind them that that statement is a high class complaint for sure. The Doll Heating and Air Conditioning Company is putting the final touches on the project. The necessary balancing of times and temperature controls is being done now. With the tweaking here and there, so necessary with a new system, the punch list will be complete. Did you know when our church was completed in 1953 there were three projects in the original plan that got dropped immediately: the pipe organ, the bell tower, and the air conditioning. However, with a little coaxing and pleading with Archbishop Ritter, Father Westhoff managed to get a pipe organ and the bell tower construction before dedication day in April of 1953. He was not so lucky with the air conditioning. While all the infrastructure was in place for eventual air conditioning, St. Peter Church on dedication day did not have actual air conditioning until the spring of 1956. There was much joy and rapture that summer for sure! 1953 Comment on our church Mary Chomeau, the author of our parish s 125 th anniversary history book, wrote in 1957about the architecture of our church, one of the first modern churches in the Archdiocese: The new church is new in more ways than one. It follows the contemporary lines which the twentieth century has seen develop. It is no less devoutly conceived and executed on that account, and doubtless its form expresses this civilization s attitude of worship, as did the medieval cathedrals the attitudes of the Age of Faith. As in the rest of the liturgical life at St. Peter, sincerity rules; the worship of God now takes place in a building truly free of artifice and solid in artistic integrity before the Creator. It seems paradoxical, perhaps, that a parish so imbued with enthusiasm for the liturgical movement as St. Peter should choose to build the new church on contemporary rather than traditional lines. Actually this was the only honest choice that could be made. For the liturgical movement in its purest manifestations seeks to restore to the Faith the most meaningful customs of the early Christian and medieval traditions. The emphasis was to be liturgical, which means, pertaining to the public official prayer of the Church, in other words, the Mass. A Gothic type of church could not have made this emphasis because people no longer possess medieval minds. The pools are closed, the old routine is back, summer is over, and Fall is on the horizon so enjoy our transition to Autumn, the best time to be a Missourian. And pray for peace in the Middle East! Pope Francis has called for this weekend to be one of fasting and prayer for a peaceful solution to the current issues in Syria and the Middle East. We are very grateful to all of you that have helped us accomplish the following goals: Enrollment has increased by 10 students over last year. Several strong staff members have been added to our team. Three of our new teachers have a master degree and the fourth is in process. 16 eighth grade graduates were placed in advanced and honors courses as freshmen this fall. Our Learning Consultant services have increased this year with the addition of Mrs. Skoff. We opened a third kindergarten with smaller class sizes. Our Middle School Science Lab is completely remodeled and ready for use. Several improvements have been made to our facility. PTO again raised over $80,000 for the school. Thank you parents! EXERCISE FOR ARTHRITIS A new class is coming to Gethsemane Lutheran Church! Join us for a community-wide group exercise and education program designed for those with arthritis and related diseases.
