Local Business Owner Celebrating 35 Years in Business In 1980, around 60 percent of working Americans had defined benefit plans (pensions). 1 Today, less than 10 percent enjoy that benefit. In 1980, 23 million retired workers and dependents received social security benefits. In 2014, that number had climbed to nearly 42 million 2. In 1980, the first 401(k) plan was created. 3 As of June 2014, 401(k) plans held an estimated $4.4 trillion in assets. 4 And, in 1980, the last of the Gen Xers were being born, no one knew what a millennial was, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was still four years away from being born. Through these last 35 years, one local businessman, Nyles Gentz and Gentz Financial, has been helping Minnesotans manage and protect their finances, especially their retirement funds. After beginning work at a large farming operation, Nyles brother-in-law got him started in the financial services industry. I had very humble beginnings, Nyles said, but learned the value of work ethic by working through the daily, physical demands of a farm operation. As time passed, Nyles saw multiple ups and downs in the financial markets and sadly witnessed some Minnesotans who lost their hard-earned income due to a lack of financial planning or faulty planning. Our goal at Gentz Financial has always been to help as many people with good financial planning as we can and to always do right by the client, Nyles said. We have an incredible team that has developed deep relationships with our clients and works daily to serve the clients well through staying educated on the industry and products and providing excellent customer service. Nyles is known for his passion and his straight talk to clients about their finances. I stay true to my roots and don t sugar coat, but work hard to offer clients solutions that can help them reach their ultimate retirement goals. As Gentz Financial grew, Nyles and his wife of 36 years, Helane, raised their family of 4 children, which included the kids being in the office on many Saturdays in the early days and going on client calls. Today, two of Nyles children are actively involved in the business and Gentz couldn t be more proud and thankful of his family s support and shared love of the business. Likewise, Nyles is grateful to the St. Cloud and Buffalo communities for their support over the past three and a half decades. Gentz Financial is a part of the fabric of these communities, and there s nowhere else we d rather be, he said. Nyles says he doesn t plan to retire because he loves what he does and continues to see such a need for solid financial planning. As the Baby Boomers continue to enter retirement and the Gen X and Gen Y generations move toward retirement, there are many Minnesotans who need help and guidance in making wise financial decisions. Nyles said, I m grateful to the past and excited for what the next 35 years will bring. ### 1

TIME TO MAKE MEDICARE CHANGES When Medicare was first signed into law in 1965, it consisted of Part A hospital insurance and Part B medical insurance, now referred to as Original Medicare. These programs are administered directly by the federal government and have standardized services, premiums, and deductibles. Two other types of coverage have since been added both offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies with varying costs and benefits. Part C, or Medicare Advantage, replaces Original Medicare and often includes prescription drug coverage and other benefits. Part D Prescription Drug Coverage can be selected with Original Medicare or with Medicare Advantage Plans that do not offer drug benefits. With all these options, it s not unusual for beneficiaries to switch plans and coverage, either because of changing circumstances or because another plan better suits their current needs. Fortunately, there are opportunities to do so during several enrollment periods throughout the year. Medicare Open Enrollment Period: October 15 to December 7. During this period, changes can be made by participants in Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans. Any changes made during this period become effective on January 1. Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period: January 1 to February 14. Participants in Medicare Advantage Plans can also switch to Original Medicare during this period, with Original Medicare coverage beginning the first day of the following month. Those who make this change have until February 14 to enroll in a Part D Prescription Drug Plan, with coverage beginning the first day of the month after the plan receives the enrollment form. Five-Star Special Enrollment Period: December 8 to November 30 of the following year. An additional opportunity allows Medicare beneficiaries to switch to a top-rated 5-star Medicare Advantage Plan, Prescription Drug Plan, or Medicare Cost Plan (alternate coverage available in certain areas of the country). Medicare rates these plans every year, and a 5-star rating is considered excellent. You can use the star ratings to compare plans based on quality and performance.
