Two such programs include Medical Transcription Online + Live- Online and Pharmacy Technician training. Both courses provide students with an entry point into the health services field. Medical transcription is the process of transcribing a doctor s audio files, or other medical documents into electronic format. The 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act requires the computerization of all Americans medical records by 2014. The Medical Transcription Online + Live-Online training is an eight-month program which includes periodic live-online sessions where students and the instructor gather 2 2011 Workforce Development Institute, Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, NY
in a virtual learning environment. You study at home, but you are never alone! Assistance is just a click away, available via e-mail and discussion boards when a live-online session isn t scheduled. Students will learn medical terminology, medical anatomy, and medical transcription over the course of 31 weeks. Not only can students study at home, but they can work from home after their training, as well. Most medical transcriptionists are employed as independent consultants, which allows for flexibility and control over how much they ll work and when. Our training partner, Andrews and Holbrook, provides job placement assistance for our graduates with a high success rate. The Workforce Development Institute also offers a three-month Pharmacy Technician training program at the college s Albany Extension Center at 175 Central Avenue. This classroom training program includes an 18-hour internship, under the supervision of the instructor, at a local pharmacy. The course takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Friday evenings, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., making it an excellent course of study for working students. This course prepares students to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), a national certification that qualifies students to work anywhere in the United States. It also qualifies successful graduates to be employed as Lead Pharmacy Technicians, increasing their employment opportunities and potential income. For those students too busy for a classroom course, Pharmacy Technician Training Online is coming in 2012. The next courses in Medical Transcription Online + Live-Online and Pharmacy Technician Training are scheduled to start in October. For more information on these courses please visit www.hvcc.edu/wdi, or call (518) 629-4235. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook: Employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow by 11 percent from 2008 to 2018... Demand for medical transcription services will continue to be spurred by a growing and aging population and job growth for pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 31 percent between 2008 and 2018, faster than the average for all occupations.
