Increasingly, it has dawned on some that a formative education in the Humanities allows the graduate with this background to enter the labour market to take up a leadership role that requires vision and perspective in various aspects of society. General: Students are required to major in two subjects (i.e. complete to third-year level) and submajor (i.e. complete to second-year level) in one subject. Other modules to a minimum of 64 credits must be added to the above to complete a degree in the Faculty of Humanities. See Typical Structure below. Due cognisance of prerequisites and timetables must be taken into account when selecting all subjects. This information will be available upon registration. In order to complete a major that is not listed above, the student must get permission from the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. UFS101 is compulsory in the first year of study; the credits from UFS101 will be acknowledged in the final transcript of results. BA Four-year Curriculum In addition to the three-year BA (General) degree, the university also offers a four-year BA curriculum to accommodate prospective students with matriculation exemption, but with an AP of 25 29. BA (Management) The curriculum has been developed to ensure that successful students will gain competence in: demonstrating their critical understanding of managerial knowledge, skills and applications; developing analytical perspectives in the field of management, which will provide opportunities for continued personal growth and making rewarding contributions to society and industry; their ability to effectively formulate and implement managerial strategies; and dealing efficiently with problems and issues related to and affecting management. It is the ideal preparation for continued study in disciplines such as environmental management, planning, development, tourism and education. Geography offers challenging careers in the public and private sector as well as offering the possibility of entrepreneurship. This programme leads to a BA qualification. Consult the information brochure for Natural and Agricultural Sciences about a BSc in Geography. Graduates of the course can be employed as geographers, development planners and managers, land-use planners, urban managers, environmental managers and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) analysts. Employment opportunities exist with consulting firms involved with development planning as well as with government institutions. 11 KOVSIE PROSPECTUS 2015

Curriculum Computer Literacy at an Advanced level is a compulsory module. A language practitioner works at the language offices of large industries and institutions, at government departments, public liaison companies and advertising and promotion enterprises. He/she assists the developers of computer software and could be a very useful team member at information management agencies, at NGOs, language agencies, or otherwise as an entrepreneur! A language practitioner can specialise in one or more of the following directions: Translator Language technologist Interpreter Language engineer Dictionary maker Language programmer Language manager Copywriter and editor Terminologist Language facilitator KOVSIE PROSPECTUS 2015 A language practitioner who wants to work in South Africa must be proficient in at least two of the official languages, one of which is his/her home language and the other one English, and must be computer literate. BA Communication Science with specialisation in Corporate and Marketing Communication This qualification enables the student to function at a junior level in an organisation as a communication or marketing communication practitioner or communication specialist. Curriculum Students will major in Corporate Communication and Marketing Communication and sub-major in Communication Science. The balance of modules required to make up the degree will be chosen from Tables A & B above. Certain Business Management modules are included in the major subjects. PROGRAMME IN HUMAN MOVEMENT SCIENCES The undergraduate programme in Human Movement Science prepares students for further study for careers in the following fields: Biokinetics Kinderkinetics Recreation Sports Science Education Undergraduate students are introduced to all four of these aspects offering various career opportunities. However, at postgraduate level students can specialise in one of the four fields (after successful selection). BA (Human Movement Science) Human Movement Science offers career-oriented teaching in Biokinetics, Kinderkinetics, Recreation and Sports Science. Students are not expected to make a specific career choice in their first year, as all four fields are studied. Consequently, a variety of career possibilities are available on completion of the three-year BA (Human Movement Science). Selecting relevant modules in combination with Human Movement Science further broadens career possibilities in teaching (after completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education), in the corporate world (e.g. sports psychologists, sports journalists, sports managers). Career opportunities are not only limited to South Africa, as Human Movement Science as a field of study is also presented internationally. PROGRAMME IN GOVERNANCE AND POLITICAL TRANSFORMATION Are you interested in understanding the political environment; comprehending the changes in the political world around you; evaluating the process of political transformation; learning how to manage the political environment in the process of rapid change; and participating in the developing of a new value system linked to good governance and democracy? This programme offers a unique multidisciplinary combination of learning outcomes, which provide students with the necessary theoretical and practical skills to make a meaningful contribution in both the public and the private sectors of South African life. Career opportunities include the following: senior professional actor, producer, designer, writer, technical expert on the amateur and professional stage, the community; as a tutor of drama and theatre in private tuition, or as teacher with a threeyear qualification and an Advanced Certificate in Education; with a further postgraduate qualification as a lecturer at colleges or at tertiary institutions; as a concept designer, producer and actor in industrial theatre in the private sector. BSocSc (Human and Societal Dynamics) Four-year Curriculum In addition to the three-year BSocSc (Human and Societal Dynamics) degree, the university also offers a four-year BSocSc (Human and Societal Dynamics) curriculum to accommodate prospective students with matriculation exemption, but with an AP of between 25 and 29. The first academic year of the standard BSocSc degree (HSD) is extended to two years of study. The curriculum is similar to the standard BSocSc (HSD) curriculum above, and follows the same structure as the BA Extended programme as previously shown.
