The success of the City s efforts to reduce GHG emissions to date has provided the municipality with evidence that these programs have recognizable impacts. The logical next step for the City is the adoption of an emissions reduction target and action plan. 3
What Are We Doing? Green Fleets, Biofuel in City Vehicles 4
What Are We Doing? Hydro-electric Dams 5
What Are We Doing? Landfill Gas-to-Energy $200,000 Federal Grant + $200,000 Federal Technical Support $330,000 Community Match = $730,000 Project 6
What Are We Doing? Solar Energy Sun Dragon Solar Pool Heating 7
What Are We Doing? LED Lighting Less than ½ the energy More than 5 times the lifetime Ann Arbor s Green Energy Challenge 30% 20% 20% Green Energy by 2010 for Municipal Operations 8

What we can control Landfill Gas-to-Energy Project: 30-50,000 MTCO 2 e annually (peaked 1997) Recycling/Composting: 44,000+ MTCO2e annually get Downtown Program: 300-600 MTCO 2 e annually Biodiesel in City Vehicles: 390+ MTCO 2 e annually Downtown LEDs: 300+ MTCO 2 e annually DTE fuel mix Less control over Resident and Business Energy Use (but we are trying w/ PACE) So why bother with a Climate Action Plan? Municipal Operations account for 3% of community-wide energy 10
P2 Activities: Outreach: Climate Competition The 2011 Energy Challenge month (February 2011) Refine: GHG Inventory and Muni Ops Produce: Climate Action Plan (2012) 130 registrants and 104 household participants (Wolske, 2009) 19,211 pounds CO2 avoided (annual = 22 vehicles) 11
A2energy.org Biggest CO 2 impact actions 40% of Challenge savings in these wedges = Thermostat (away & overnight) = CFLs and Low Flow Showerheads Ø = Wall insulation and furnace upgrades $ $$ 3,475 lbs CO 2 12
