SUPPORT OUR TROOPS SCHOLARSHIPS OVERVIEW Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS) is pleased to announce the launch of the new Support Our Troops (SOT) Scholarship Program introduced for the FY 15/16 academic year, which commences 1 Sep 15. The SOT Scholarship Program is intended to complement but not duplicate other scholarship programs offered to the members of the Canadian Forces (CF) Community. The SOT Scholarship Program is available to families of currently serving members and veterans. At this time, five full-time Scholarships and two part-time Scholarships will be awarded annually. For full-time students, the maximum value of the scholarship is $10K, to be split equally over the course of the program, to a maximum of four years. For part-time students, the maximum value of the scholarship is $5K to be split over the course of the program to a maximum of six years. Those who are eligible to apply for a SOT Scholarship are encouraged to apply on-line on the SOT website under the Support Our Troops Scholarships in the programs section, please visit: www.supportourtroops.ca. Applications must be submitted by 31 Jul 15 and are to include: A proof of enrolment in a post-secondary (university of college) program; A current resume; A letter of recommendation supporting the application from a professor, academic advisor or community leader; and A maximum 500 word essay describing the impact of military life and the importance of a scholarship. The first recipients of the SOT Scholarship Program will be announced by 15 Aug 2015. The Support Our Troops Program is supported by: donations from generous Canadians and Corporate Canada, proceeds from events undertaken by community-based groups, and contributions from external organizations and foundations. BMO Bank of Montreal has committed to providing funding for five SOT scholarships, one to be awarded in each of the next five years. SUPPORT OUR TROOPS (SOT) SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM Terms and Conditions 1. Background a. The SOT Program offers up to seven scholarships, five for full-time students and two for part-time students annually to families i of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Members ii and veterans iii aspiring to continue their post secondary education at the college or university level. b. The designation of part-time and full-time status is determined by the university/ college being attended by the applicant. c. For full-time students, the maximum value of the scholarship that may be allocated is $10,000. The amount of the scholarship granted will be split equally over the course of the program up to a maximum of four years. d. For part-time students, the maximum value of the scholarship that may be allocated is $5,000. The amount of the scholarship granted will be split equally over the course of the program up to a maximum of six years. 2. Eligibility Criteria a. To be eligible for a SOT Scholarship, applicants must be family of a currently serving member of the CAF or a veteran as defined within the NPP Eligibility matrix and must be: i. A Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status in Canada; and ii. Enrolled in an undergraduate program leading to a degree, diploma or certificate at a recognized publicly funded Canadian college or university. b. A student who plans to attend a program outside of Canada as part of a year-abroad program is eligible to apply provided he/she is participating in an exchange program as part of the undergraduate course curriculum at a recognized publicly funded Canadian college or university and the degree issued is from a recognized publicly funded Canadian college or university. c. Employees, directors, and officers of Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS) and its subsidiaries, and any family of any of the foregoing are not eligible for the scholarships. For greater certainty, family shall be defined as a person whose parent or legal guardian is an employee, director or officer of CFMWS or any of its subsidiaries. 3. Application Process a. Applications to the program are available on the CFMWS website, and are to be submitted on-line. Deadline to apply is 31 July of each year at 23:59hrs EST. b. Applications may be completed in either official language (French or English). c. Applications are to include the following documentation: i. A proof of enrolment in the program, or a letter of acceptance into a program from the college or university; ii. A current resume; iii. A letter of recommendation supporting the application from a professor, academic advisor or community leader; and iv. A maximum 500 word essay describing the impact of military life and the importance of a scholarship. d. Incomplete applications will not be considered and will be returned to the applicant. 4. Adjudication Process a. The Scholarship Administrator will review all eligible applications and provide a shortlist of applicants for consideration by the CFMWS Scholarship Board. b. Applications will be prioritized based on the following: i. Civic Engagement, Extracurricular, Volunteer and Work Experience - 30% of total score; ii. Essay Answer 30% iii. Letter of Reference 25%; and iv. Financial need 15%. c. The essay will be evaluated based on the following: i. Clarity of thought and communication of arguments 25%; ii. Persuasiveness 25%; iii. Creativity/originality 25%; and iv. Potential positive impact 25%. d. Submissions will be reviewed by the CFMWS Scholarship Board in early August to determine the recipients of the Scholarship. At the sole discretion of the CFMWS Scholarship Board, an applicant may be asked to meet with the Board via phone, video conference or in person depending on where the applicant resides. e. All decisions rendered by the Board are considered to be final. 5. Applicant Guidelines a. The applicant certifies that all the information provided on the application form and in all the accompanying documents is true, accurate, and complete to the best of their knowledge. The applicant understands that the provision of false information will render them ineligible for this Scholarship program. b. By submitting the scholarship application, the scholarship candidate authorizes CFMWS and its employees, agents, contractors and those of its affiliates to release any information provided in or relating to the scholarship application to its representatives, the CFMWS Scholarship Board, Administrator, and respective representatives who need to know such information for purposes of administering and promoting this and other CFMWS programs. c. The applicant authorizes CFMWS, the Scholarship Administrator, and respective representatives to collect, use, store and confirm information about the applicant; the application; the service arrangements applicant has made with or through CFMWS, high school, college, university, government, or community sources; and from 4 5 references the applicant has provided to CFMWS, our Administrator, and their
6. Other respective representatives in the application for the purposes of administering and promoting this Scholarship program. The information CFMWS, Administrator and their respective representatives may collect, use, store and confirm includes, but is not limited to, personal evaluations and transcripts. d. The applicant hereby authorizes third parties, such as universities, government or community sources to release information required for the scholarship to CFMWS, Scholarship Administrator and respective representatives who need to know such information for purposes of administering the SOT Scholarships. This information may include personal evaluations, verification that student information is correct and transcripts. e. In the event that an applicant is a scholarship recipient, the applicant authorizes CFMWS the worldwide right to use the applicant name, image, likeness, city and province of residence, university name and any direct quotes made by the applicant in respect of the Scholarship program for marketing and publicity purposes in any and all media without further compensation. f. Scholarship recipients (in the case of minors, a parent or legal guardian) will be required to sign a Declaration of Compliance, Publicity and Liability Release before being awarded a scholarship. The signed declaration will include the recipient s consent to the use of their name, city and province or territory of residence and photograph, image or likeness without further compensation, in any publicity carried out by SOT in respect of the Scholarship program. a. The SOT Program reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, amend (including extending the Scholarship application deadline) or cancel this Scholarship program at any time without individual notice. List of Scholarships & Bursaries: ABORIGINAL LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY YEAR (ALOY) Program The year-long Aboriginal Leadership Opportunity Year (ALOY) program accepts 20 aboriginal youths each year. The program is designed to provide youth with a post-secondary school experience, and includes education, leadership, military and academic development programs. Graduates of the program who meet the academic and military requirements can enroll at RMCC or enlist as noncommissioned members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The program is a partnership between the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the National Association of Friendship Centres, the Canadian Defence Academy and RMCC. Includes students on full-time study status (such as Regular Officer Training Program). CF, Reserve Force Members: includes the Primary Reserve (serving on one of three classes of service A, B, and C), the Canadian Rangers and the Cadet Organization Administrative and Training Service. iii Canadian Forces Veteran: The Government of Canada officially recognizes as Veterans - for public recognition purposes only- those members of the Canadian Forces who have successfully completed Basic Military Training; and, have been released from the Canadian Forces with an honourable discharge. ACADEMY CANADA Canadian Armed Forces Military Spouse Scholarship Program Location: Three locations in Newfoundland and online learning Academy Canada has a tuition reduction program for the spouses of Canadian Armed Forces members. Academy Canada wishes to support Canadian Armed Forces families by assisting military spouses in the pursuit to further their education and career goals. Spouses of Canadian Armed Forces members who have served at least three years are eligible for the Academy Canada scholarship program. For military spouses already enrolled, tuition reduction will come into effect at the start of the semester subsequent to the student becoming eligible. Eligible students are entitled to a $1000 tuition reduction each semester as long as their spouse remains an active Canadian Armed Forces member. The tuition reduction will be in scholarship/bursary form. Students are responsible to pay any applicable income taxes on these funds. ALGONQUIN COLLEGE Military Families Fund Sens Foundation Bursary Location: Campuses in the National Capital Region and Ottawa Valley as well as online learning Algonquin College offers a variety of services to military members and their families, including the Military Families Fund Sens Foundation Bursary. Applications for the Bursary are currently being accepted for the 2015-2016 school year. Successful applications will be selected in the fall of each academic year. Kossa Memorial Scholarship The Frank Kossa ANAVETS bursary is awarded annually in a draw at our annual Board of Director s meeting. To qualify for the draw, an applicant has to have earned the prestigious Cadet ANAVETS Medal of Merit and be entering any year of a University of Community College course leading to a degree or diploma. CANADA COMPANY Scholarship Program Location: At over 70 colleges and universities across Canada Children of military parents killed while serving on an active mission with the Canadian Armed Forces are eligible to receive financial assistance for their post-secondary education from the Canada Company Scholarship Fund launched in October 2007. The scholarship fund is in recognition of the selfless sacrifice that Canada s brave military personnel make in the service of their country. The Canada Company Scholarship Fund provides up to $4,000 per year for up to four years to support the post-secondary education for children who qualify. The fund will provide scholarship grants to children retro-actively to January 1, 2002. Project Hero Established in 2009 by General (Retired) Rick Hillier and Honorary Lt. Colonel Kevin Reed, this scholarship is offered to children of fallen soldiers who wish to begin undergraduate studies. Over 70 Canadian colleges and universities offer this scholarship, which is used towards tuition and in some cases room and board for the first year of study. Application can be completed here: http://anavets.ca/?page_id=129 BRANDON UNIVERSITY Afghanistan Mission Memorial Award Location: Brandon, Manitoba The Afghanistan Mission Memorial Award recognizes the sacrifice of Canadians within the theatre of combat, in peacekeeping and in diplomatic service in Afghanistan. These full tuition undergraduate awards are available to any student whose parent or legal guardian was a member of Canadian Armed Forces staff or Canada s federal diplomatic corps (i.e. department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade) and was killed as a result of an operational mission in Afghanistan (as of 2001/2002) or in training for such a mission. These awards are open to full-time or part-time undergraduate students in their first degree. To be eligible to receive the award, a student must also have graduated from high school and undertaken their first year of study prior to the age of 21. These awards are renewable to a maximum of 120 credit hours provided that the student remains in good standing (minimum 2.0 c.g.p.a.). THE CANADIAN HERO FUND The Canadian Hero Fund Scholarship Children and spouses of Canadian soldiers who are killed in active duty are eligible for Canadian Hero Fund scholarships. These scholarships help the children of fallen soldiers pursue a post-secondary education and provide spouses of fallen soldiers the necessary support for professional retraining. Scholarships can be used towards attendance at an accredited university, college, or trade school in Canada. The Canadian Hero Fund is currently accepting scholarship applications. In order to assist CMEA members and their dependants pursuing post secondary education, the CMEA Bursary Program was put in place. The program consists of six individual educational bursaries of $1000, to be awarded annually, for the year of study starting in September, to three applicants meeting the eligibility criteria. Applicants may receive bursaries in more than one year of study, however annual applications must be submitted. Priority shall be given to those applicants who have not previously received a bursary through this program. To be eligible, a candidate must be a returning soldier who served on active duty in designated military operations in the Canadian Armed Forces (Regular or Reserves), after January 2001; and a returning soldier who is a current or former Saskatchewan resident; or the spouse or child of a permanently disabled or deceased soldier who served in designated military operations after January 2001 and who is or was a Saskatchewan resident. INTEREST-FREE LOAN STATUS Student loan interest-free status is available to any Canadian student reservists currently on Special Duty Assignments in Special Duty areas (i.e. war zones). Interest-free status benefits student reservists by ensuring that the student loans of reservists will not accrue interest, and reservists will not be required to make payments on their student loan. To be eligible for this interest-free status, reservists must indicate that their student loans are not in repayment, that they are serving abroad on a Canadian mission (including the training period prior to deployment and the re-integration period before discharge or any medical recovery/rehab period after the deployment ends) and will be returning to their studies once they are released from active duty. Consideration may be given to students demonstrating financial need. The Scholarship will be available to: (I) a Wing member (as defined by the Constitution) or *relative of a Wing member; (ii) an Air Force Veteran or a *relative of an Air Force Veteran; (iii) an Air Cadet/ex Air Cadet of the 515 North Atlantic Squadron (defined as any person who has served for two years and is/was in good standing at present or at the time of departure from his/her Air Cadet Unit). *Note: Relative is defined as son/daughter; grandson/daughter; greatgrandson/daughter; brother/sister; nephew/niece. The Scholarship may be awarded to the same applicant more than once. If in any given year, there is no eligible candidate, two scholarships may be awarded in the following year at the discretion of the trustees. The War Veterans Family Award This award has been established to give financial assistance to Canadian and Newfoundland War Veterans who served overseas and their families. It is valued at $2500 annually and is renewable for up to three additional years provided the recipient maintains the minimum academic requirements for an award and continues as a full-time undergraduate student at the University. To be eligible for this award, students must show that they are the child, grandchild, spouse or other dependant of a Canadian or Newfoundland War Veteran, or are themselves a Canadian or Newfoundland War Veteran. The applicant must provide the war veteran s name, service branch and service number. The recipients will be enrolled in any year of study at Memorial University of Newfoundland and would have graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador. Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated financial need. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the University. MOUNT ROYAL UNIVERSITY Nicole Stacey Memorial Scholarship Locations: Mount Royal University students The Nicole Stacey Memorial Scholarship is designed to recognize academic achievement. Starting Fall 2013, a full time student enrolled in his or her second year in Aviation Diploma program will be awarded. The scholarship disbursement will be of $1000.00 for the deserving recipient. In honouring the life that Nicole had lived, preference will be given to a Canadian resident who is dedicated to committing service and betterment of their communities. This would also include any persons that serve with the Canadian Armed Forces (Regular Force, Reserve, or Rangers), the police, EMS, or firefighting. Criteria: Applicants will be assessed on the academic achievement on top of their service to their communities. NORTHERN ALBERTA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (NAIT) Fallen Heroes Scholarship Location: Campuses in Edmonton and Calgary, as well as distance learning. This scholarship is available to any full-time student at NAIT who is an immediate family member of a fallen hero. A fallen hero includes members of the Canadian Armed Forces, police service, firefighters or emergency medical technicians/paramedics who have died on duty. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need and/or satisfactory academic achievement. One scholarship of $2,000 is awarded annually and the deadline to apply is 31 January and 30 September 2015. Memorial Bursary This bursary is available to any full-time or apprenticeship student at NAIT who is the child of a currently serving or retired Canadian Armed Forces member. Contact information is available at www.legion.ca ROYAL CANADIAN NAVAL BENEVOLENT FUND Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund Educational Assistance Location: Various Locations The Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund assists dependants and grandchildren of serving and retired naval members with their educational pursuits at colleges, universities, and vocational institutions. ROBERTSON COLLEGE AND ROBERTSON COLLEGE ONLINE Scholarship Program Location: Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Brandon, Online CF Community members can receive up to a $5,000 scholarship for online courses/programs, and up to a $3,000 scholarship for Ground Campus programs. We understand that you may have other work or family commitments and could be posted to a new city on short notice. Annually twenty Navy Centennial Bursary scholarships of $3,500 each, 30 Sea Cadet Scholarships, and one CPO Hooser $5,000 scholarships are awarded. In addition the RCNBF administers the CPO Andrew McQueen Jack Trust which provides 10 bursaries, of $1,000 to former and serving members of the naval forces of Canada, their dependants and descendants. Applications for these awards must be received not before 1 September and no later than end-october. Under a separate program, the Fund also assists those with financial need who are pursuing trade, vocational, or community college training. This assistance, which is based on need, is limited to a maximum of $1,500 per applicant. Applications are accepted any time during the year for this program. THE ROYAL CANADIAN REGIMENT ASSOCIATION Bursary Program The Royal Canadian Regiment Association will award up to three bursaries of $1,500.00 each for calendar year. The number of bursaries awarded will depend upon the number of applicants and their suitability. Eligible applicants must be: a. a child or grandchild of a serving, former serving or deceased member of the Royal Canadian Regiment; or b. a serving member of the Royal Canadian Regiment or a spouse of a serving member; or c. a member in good standing of a Cadet Corps affiliated with or sponsored by the Royal Canadian Regiment; and d. in his or her final year of secondary schooling and preparing to attend an institute of higher learning (University, Trades School, Teachers College, Technical College, Nursing School). In the case of a serving member or serving member s spouse the above criteria applies except there is no time limit between completing secondary school and commencement of attendance at an institute of higher learning but marks for high school must be supplied. Potential applicants should note that the following persons do not qualify: a. Former and serving members themselves; and b. Anyone who has already commenced a post-secondary school education program. The winners of the bursaries will be chosen on scholastic achievement, community service activities, military/cadet service (if any) and family financial position. The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Education Foundation awards scholarships annually to Royal Canadian Sea Cadets entering the first year of University or Community College course leading to a degree or diploma. b. These scholarships will not be granted where candidates enrol in the Canadian Armed Forces Regular Officer Training Plan. c. The amount of the scholarship is $1000.00 per cadet. The value of the scholarship will be made payable to the institution being attended. Veterans Affairs Children of War Dead (Education Assistance) Act This Act provides fees and monthly allowances for children of veterans whose death was attributable to military service. Awards will be based on academic achievement, participation in defence and national security activities, field of study, work experience, statements of objectives, and recommendations. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, colour, or religion. WiDS reserves the right to revise, suspend, or discontinue this program without notice. Applicants must meet the following criteria. No exceptions will be considered. 1. be currently enrolled at an accredited university or college, either full-time or part- time; 2. undergraduate and graduate students are eligible; undergraduates must have attained at least 3rd year university; 3. demonstrate interest in pursuing a career related to national security or defence; 4. have a minimum grade point average of 70%; 5. provide evidence of community, education or professional leadership; 6. be a woman; and 7. be a citizen of Canada. NOTE: 1. Students who are already fully subsidized (i.e. ROTP) or in receipt of more than $10,000 in other academic scholarships/ awards/bursaries for the academic year 2014-2015 (September 2013-August 2014) are not eligible to apply. 2. WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Wilkin Family Military Scholarship Fund Location: Brantford, ON. This scholarship is open to full time students attending courses at Laurier Brantford campus in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year with a minimum cumulative GPA of 9.0 (B+). Eligible students must be accepted to the Canadian Army Reserve Force with the 56th Field Regiment, Brantford, Ontario. This scholarship will be granted to the two applicants who are deemed to demonstrate the most serious commitment to the 56th Field Regiment. Taken into consideration will be overall leadership, attendance at parades and participation in summer military camp. The successful applicants must provide to Student Awards a sealed letter from their Commanding Officer that indicates they are an active and effective member of the regiment.
