Page 1 of 10 Call For Ideas Background Healthy Kids Community Challenge is a community wide program focusing on the health and wellbeing of kids ages 12 and under. The goal of the program is to promote children s health through physical activity and healthy eating. has issued its own challenge to the community, to put forward the best idea for getting kids to be physically active for at least 60 minutes each day. Funding of up to $5000 will be available to schools, organizations, community groups and youth for innovative ways that promote physical activity and make it easier for kids to be active, supporting the first theme. We are particularly interested in applications that include a variety of different groups working together and that are able to have a broad reach within the community. What does physical activity include? Active Play: child-directed or free play including things like tag, skipping or ball games. Active Transportation: walking, running, biking, skating, skateboarding or scooting, the things kids do to move from one place to another. Recreational Sports: organized physical activity such as street hockey, dance, basketball, yoga and much, much more. What must be included as part of your idea? 1. Groups working together (public, private, not-for-profit organizations, community). 2. Actions that will increase awareness of and participation in Healthy Kids Community Challenge. 3. Focus on children ages 12 and under; this may include a focus on infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and/or school aged children and ways for meeting recommended physical activity guidelines. and/or Focus on parents/caregivers providing tools/resources for encouraging children ages 12 and under to be physically active.

Page 2 of 10 We are looking for ideas that will achieve Healthy Kids Community Challenge Outcomes Improved healthy behaviours among children related to physical activity Improved parental support behaviours related to physical activity Reduced perceived barriers to physical activity What barriers to physical activity will your project address? We learned from the community that being physically active can be challenging for a variety of reasons including: Cost: equipment costs, program registration fees and travel expense can make it difficult for kids to be involved in organized sports and recreation. Technology: children and youth are spending more time than ever playing on cell phones, computers, video games and other electronic devices, taking time away from being active. Positive Role Models: family, friends and community role models can help build a positive culture around physical activity, building a community where families can play together. Here are some action areas to help develop your ideas When asked what actions could be taken to increase physical activity responses from the community focused on: Accessible Programs making it easier for kids to be active by providing affordable options, after school activities or encouraging outdoor activities. This might include playground games/activities, a running/hiking club or scheduled pick-up programs that focus on getting kids moving and having fun at the same time. Active Transportation: encouraging kids to walk, ride or wheel to school, identifying safe routes to school and connecting kids to community parks or playgrounds. Youth Leadership: invest in youth through leadership training, mentorship and role model initiatives encouraging involvement in schools and the community You may wish to consider one of these action areas in developing your idea. While your idea does not have to include actions from this list, priority will be given to submissions that have a focus on one of the action areas listed. What can funding be used for? Funds can be used towards marketing, portable equipment, program resources, rental fees, leadership opportunities, staffing or program materials.
