Two Projects? Information Literacy I (IK 1) (2003-2005) Target group: undergraduate students Information Literacy II (IK 2) (2006-2007) Target group: graduates, PhD-Candidates, Staff, Lecturers, Professors, Scientists, etc. (everybody else) 3
Why taking action? Situation 2001/2002 not satisfactory User demand for more library-based courses Dramatically changing basic conditions (Europe) New Bachelor programs New Master programs Adaptation of international standards (Bologna) for university instruction Wish for uniqueness (Spirit of Konstanz) 4
Concept (IK 1) To develop courses on Information Literacy Adapt national and international standards Be universal and to have reusable material Further knowledge of students Relief for help desk Better librarianship through reflection/ self evaluation 5
Principles (IK 1) The main principles for the single courses are: Modular design Interchangeable Possibility to personalize / adapt to subject needs Universal design Cross-subject usability Cross-university usability Setting independent design E-Learning and blended learning Backup by reference librarians and subject specialists 6
Endeavors (IK 1) Project started Sept. 2003, ran 2 years 2x 50%-positions (1 for 2 years, 1 for 1 year) Promoted by the Ministry for Science and Culture of Baden-Württemberg und the University of Konstanz Konstanzer Arbeitskreis Informationskompetenz (KNAKIK = Constance Workgroup for IL) assisting the project-managers (since fall 2003) 7
Achievements (IK 1) domestical - establishing Information Literacy as a topic on campus - Organization of an Infrastructure for IL - Buildup of an E-Learning platform - Integration IL into the curriculum (Bachelor-Programs) - Better position of the Library as an important service provider global - Influence in regional and national effort (e.g. standards) - Positioning of Konstanz as cutting-edge in new methods - International network (China, US, UK, Europe) IK II 8
