Alexandre Macard 11th January 2013 How to deploy Arkeia Network Backup v10 on Windows Server 2008 and later with a domain This step-by-step document describes how to use Group Policy to automatically distribute Arkeia Network Backup v10 and later to client computers. You can use Group Policy to distribute computer programs by using the following method: Assigning Software You can assign a program distribution to users or computers. If you assign the program to a user, it is installed when the user logs on to the computer. If you assign the program to a computer, it is installed when the computer starts, and it is available to all users who log on to the computer. Note Windows Server 2003 Group Policy automated-program installation requires client computers that are running Microsoft Windows 2000 or a later version. Note Arkeia Network Backup give packages for all Windows version. Here, we will assign the msi package for a computer with the correct package corresponding on the Windows version. For example we will install Arkeia Windows Vista package for all Windows Vista client, etc... In this document we will describe installation for 2 Windows version, Vista and Seven. Create a distribution point To assign a computer program, you must create a distribution point on the publishing server. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Log on to the server as an administrator. 2. Create a shared network folder. (For example c:\share) 3. Put the Microsoft Windows Installer package (msi) in the new created directory. Here we will put two Arkeia packages Windows Vista and Windows Seven package. 4. Then create a file in the same shared network folder named 'arkeiabsip.txt'. 5. Open the 'arkeiabsip.txt' file and write in it your Arkeia Backup Server IP address. 6. Set permissions on

the share directory to allow access to the distribution package and 'arkeiabsip.txt' file. Create a Group Policy Object To create a Group Policy Object (GPO) to use to distribute Arkeia Network Backup MSI package, follow these steps: 1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. To do this, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Group Policy Management. 2. Right-click Group Policy Objects and click on New.

3. Type in a name - e.g. Arkeia Windows 7. 4. Now, decide whether the policy applies to computers or users. In this example we will use Computer mode.

5. Click on the Group Policy Object you just created. In the right bottom panel, click on Add and then click on Object Types and select Computers. Then choose the domain computers the package should be distributed to. For example select all your Windows Seven Computers in your domain.

6. Next, right-click on the GPO you just created and select Edit. This will open the Group Policy Management Editor. 7. Now, expand the Computer Configuration node, then expand Policies, then the Software Settings node. 8. Right-click on Software installation and select New Package.

9. Select the arkeia_10.0.0_master_win7_x86-64.msi file from the distribution point (the share where you stored the files expanded from the installer package). Important: Make sure you access the file through its share path (typically \\servername\sharename) 10.Choose Assigned deployment method and click OK. 11.Then you need to create a GPO link into your domain. Right-click on Domain Controllers folder and select Link an Existing GPO..., then select your freshly created gpo. Procedure is the same for Windows Vista system or other Windows system you may have.

Redeploy a package In some cases, you may want to redeploy a software package (for example, if you upgrade or change the package). To redeploy a package, follow these steps: 1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. To do this, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Group Policy Management. 2. Right-click your Group and click Edit. 3. Expand the Software Settings container that contains the software installation item that you used to deploy the package. 4. Click the software installation container that contains the package. 5. In the right-pane of the Group Policy window, right-click the program, point to All Tasks, and then click Redeploy application. You will receive the following message: Redeploying this application will reinstall the application everywhere it is already installed. Do you want to continue? 6. Click Yes. 7. Quit the Group Policy snap-in, click OK, and then close the Group Policy Management. Remove a package To remove a published or assigned package, follow these steps: 1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. To do this, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Group Policy Management. 2. Click the Group Policy tab, click the Group Policy Object that you used to deploy the package, and then click Edit. 3. Expand the Software Settings container that contains the software installation item that you used to deploy the package. 4. Click the software installation container that contains the package. 5. In the right-pane of the Group Policy window, right-click the program, point to All Tasks, and then click Remove. 6. Do one of the following: Click Immediately uninstall the software from users and computers, and then click OK. Click Allow users to continue to use the software but prevent new installations, and then click OK. 7. Close the Group Policy snap-in, click OK, and then closet the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.
