Awareness participation education Our education programs at the Otway Fly are designed to be FUN and interactive As we all know, students learn best when they re having fun. Put together in a manner to create interest, spark discussion and debate with the objective of creating a sense of ownership of the forest, after all it s our planet, love her and she shall love you back. The roll of the forest, what does the forest really do for you? We discuss environmental changes and effects in a modern world, eco systems, food webs, collaboration and sustainability. Our fantastic guides are local community members who are passionate and have a genuine love of creating awareness for the next generation of environment protectors. All of our education programs are implemented in a non bias fashion and take into consideration both sides of any and every debate. We customise your tours to fit your key subject objectives to suit your curriculum and the duration of your visit, so come talk to us and we will get it just right for you. We can also help with pre and post visit activities. The Otway Fly education programs run from 4 different platforms. -Timber to Tourism- aimed at VCE level -Otway Survivor- years 7-10 -Habitat Walk- years 4-6 -Earth Keepers- years prep-4 All of our education packages include our world famous Tree Top Walk. We have various catering options available and the high adrenalin thrills of the Zip Line Tour can be incorporated into most guided tours. Timber to Tourism- The Timber to Tourism platform is our most popular with students and educators alike. We start with the statement Commercialisation of the outdoor experience is the only way to ensure the long term protection of our natural environment this statement is deliberately controversial and should spark discussion and debate. We talk of history and lessons learned, modern logging practices, sustainable environment strategies, conflicts of interest, habitat loss and protection and the value of natural resources. What is a forest really worth? www.otwayfly.com.au Page 1 of 9

Otway Survivor- The Otway Survivor platform is put together with a Bear Grills style survival theme. We introduce students to native trees, plants, bush foods and animals. We talk of habitat and ask the question, what is really needed to survive? (Food, water, shelter and protection) We learn of local pioneers and aboriginal skills and crafts. Interaction within an eco system including competition, predator behaviour, collaboration, pollination, reproduction, parenting and the effects of introduced species. Hands on activities can include direction finding, shelter building and fire lighting. We learn of the survival skills and adaptations of various animals and plants (flora and fauna) We also discuss natural and manmade changes to the continually evolving natural environment. Habitat Walk- The Habitat Walk platform encourages students to interact and provides a feeling of ownership of our environment. We begin by asking students to make a list of 5 things they believe they can t live without, this and other activities which we can help provide, can be done in class before your visit to get a heads up and to build the anticipation of your arrival. We introduce a range of animals and plants and discuss where they live and what they need to survive. We learn about habitat loss and protection and things we can do to help our natural environment from our suburban homes. We talk of changes in habitat in our modern world, zoo s versus wildlife refuge and we go in search of different animals and their homes throughout the forest creating a senses/data base as we go. Most importantly we evoke a sense of appreciation of what the forest really does for us. Have you thanked a tree today? Earth Keepers- Serious fun, we introduce the character Dan Dan the environment man as he takes students through a fun filled and exciting range of hands on activities. Firstly we enrol students in The Otway Fly s Junior Ecologist Apprentice programme students can make and wear a badge giving a true sense of participation and identification. We introduce the forest as a neighbourhood then we give the students the important job of finding out just who and what lives in the community and what role they play. We discuss how our own cities are identifiable by their distinctive features and compare how our forests and eco systems can also be identified by their features. Importantly we learn of Mother Nature s amazing recycling system and the necessity of each and every community members fully dedicated participation. www.otwayfly.com.au Page 2 of 9
