TRANSPORT AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT BRIDGING 2016 Transport and Supply Chain Management BRIDGING 1. WHAT MAKES THE TRANSPORT AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT BRIDGING PROGRAMME UNIQUE? Students with a Grade 12 certificate to pursue a career in Transport or Logistics This programme has been developed to allow prospective students who possess a Gr 12 certificate but without endorsement to a Diploma level to improve their qualification in order to be able to proceed to Diploma studies in Transport and Logistics. This programme is unique to the Department of Transport and Supply Chain Management at the University of Johannesburg. It has been developed in consultation with the Transport and Logistics Industry in order to allow students to improve their career advancement prospects in the industry. 2. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Grade 12 with certificate endorsement A good working knowledge of English Study material will be available only in English Relevant documentation (seen how to enrol, page 6) Computer Literacy and Internet access 4. LEARNING PATH The bridging programme will only give students access to specific programmes offered in the Department of Transport and Supply Chain Management at the University of Johannesburg. PLEASE NOTE: The University does not register students who submit incomplete documentation or do not attach the necessary certified documents required for registration. No admittance letters are issued on Diploma programmes in the Department of Transport and Supply Chain Management as students registering for this programme do not apply prior to registration. An SMS and proof of registration document will be sent to you ONLY if your registration was successful and you have been registered. Your study material should reach your Post Office within ±10 working days after receiving the sms notification. 7

ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMINATIONS Two assignments per module are required The examination is written in August to September Learners must pass all the modules to be promoted to the following programmes: Diploma in Transportation Management Diploma in Road Transport Management Freight Diploma in Road Transport Management Passengers Diploma in Logistics Management The assignments will count 25% towards the final mark for the specific module The examination will count 75 % towards the final mark for the specific module. A minimum of 40% for an examination is required to pass a module A pass mark of 50% is required for each module 7. CREDIT A student may be granted a supplementary examination opportunity in accordance with the criteria determined by the University Should a student not pass all the modules he/she will NOT be allowed to enrol for the following programmes: Diploma in Transportation Management Diploma in Road Transport Management Freight Diploma in Road Transport Management Passenger Diploma in Logistics Management No credits from this programme can be transferred to any other formal programme except for the programmes mentioned above Student will retain credit for the module/s already passed. Credits may be retained only for a maximum period of three years. 8
TRANSPORT AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT BRIDGING 2016 7. CURRICULUM Basic Mathematics and Quantitative Techniques for Logisticians This module follows a practical training approach, in which students are introduced to the role and importance of quantitative techniques in logistics management as well as the teaching of basic mathematical and quantitative skills required in logistics management. Industrial Relations This module familiarises student with the basic theoretical and practical foundation underlying industrial relations in South Africa. The module provides grounding in management philosophy, the role of the State, constitutional principles, trade unions, collective bargaining, negotiations, recognition agreements, strikes, unfair labour practices, etc. The implications of various management approaches for optimizing industrial relations in the future are covered, and case studies are used to provide opportunities for the practical application of the principles discussed. Managing Road Transport Operation This module gives students the ability to understand an organisation and make supervisory decisions on a visionary basis. It allows students to understand the organising and use of resources. The components of management are covered and related to transport. The application of Managerial concepts with Work Teams is studied and explained. 8. PROGRESSION On completion of the Bridging Programme, a student will be able to apply for a Diploma programme. 9
