Introduction The Planning Guide includes information on how to plan your course and unit schedules indicating the years when the units will be offered. You will see that some units are offered every year and others in alternate years. The schedule is not a guarantee that a given unit will be available in a particular year. Changed circumstances can lead to variations. Units are grouped into nine unit fields: Languages (LA), Old Testament (OT), New Testament (NT), Theology (TH), Church History (CH), Philosophy and Ethics (PE), Evangelism and Mission (EM), Pastoral Church Focussed Ministries (PC) and Developmental Ministry (DM). Morling internal Three- and Four-Year Awards Some students will wish to complete a standard Morling three or four award in addition to the completion of a BMin, BTh, MDiv or three year combined Advanced Diplomas of Theology & Ministry. Information concerning the requirements of the two standard Morling awards is provided in this Planning Guide (see the table of contents). You are advised to make a photocopy. ACT Graduate Diploma in Ministry BTh and BMin students who wish to receive the Four-Year Morling award (which fulfils the academic requirements for Baptist Accreditation) have the opportunity to complete a Graduate Diploma in Ministry within their Fourth Year program. This constitutes a special and separate strand for fourth year students. Some students, however may be unable to take advantage of the Graduate Diploma in Ministry. In this case, you are able to complete an Advanced Diploma together with your degree, or use internal units in your fourth year. Consult with Keith Mitchell. Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Counselling No information (other than the unit schedule) is provided here about these awards. See your Course Advisor if you are interested in these awards now or in the future. This could affect your choice of units. A booklet giving full details is available from the office. Master of Arts (Christian Studies) and Master of Arts (Theology/Ministry) See the Postgraduate Co-ordinator, Dr. Graham Hill Enrolment with the ACT In addition to enrolling for each unit at Morling College, it is also necessary to enrol with the ACT. This is done by enrolling on both Morling and ACT enrolment forms, which are usually supplied together. There is a small ACT Administration fee per unit which Morling pays to the ACT. It is your responsibility to indicate whether your units are to be enrolled with the ACT. See the Academic Registrar for further details. Introduction 5

A Note About GUIDED SPIRITUAL FORMATION (formerly SEBL ) (2008 and subsequent years) Morling College requires that all full-time students must enrol in Guided Spiritual Formation. From Semester 1 2008 a new procedure for Guided Spiritual Formation will operate. Until 2007, Morling College required students to do Guided Spiritual Formation over six semesters, and required them to pay only the ACT Registration fee for Guided Spiritual Formation, and only in the last of those six semesters. Additionally, where they attended a day-workshop as part of Guided Spiritual Formation, students were charged $50 to cover costs for that workshop. Students completing Guided Spiritual Formation who began it before 2008 will continue to pay only the ACT registration fee for the unit, and the ACT will accept four semesters of Guided Spiritual Formation for full credit for the unit towards an Award. Any pre-2008 Guided Spiritual Formation student now need only complete four semesters of Guided Spiritual Formation in order for it to be credited to an Award; it is possible to enrol retrospectively in any discrete quarters of Guided Spiritual Formation already completed, plus the quarter to be completed in Semester 1 2008, and pay the respective quarters of the ACT Registration fee. This will be made clear on the enrolment forms. Gradually the need for this will fade away as earlier students complete Guided Spiritual Formation. Students who began Guided Spiritual Formation ( SEBL ) in 2008 or later will pay the usual Morling unit fee for Guided Spiritual Formation (as well as the ACT Registration fee) divided into quarters, and will enrol in each semester-length quarter of SEBL as a discrete unit. This will be made clear on the enrolment forms. After all four quarters have been completed the unit will be credited to the student s Award. Guided Spiritual Formation is compulsory for two Awards (the Bachelor of Ministry and the Advanced Diploma of Ministry). Where Guided Spiritual Formation is not required for the student s Award, Morling requires that a full-time student do Guided Spiritual Formation anyway, and if the student does not wish Guided Spiritual Formation to count towards the Award, the student may choose an additional unit for which Morling will waive 100% of the Morling tuition fee (only the ACT Registration fee need be paid for this unit.) Guided Spiritual Formation after four semesters Because Morling College requires all full-time students to be involved in Guided Spiritual Formation -type activities, after the fourth semester of Guided Spiritual Formation, when ACT requirements for the unit have been met, 3rd & 4th year: full-time students will continue Guided Spiritual Formation, but not as an ACT enrolment. They will register for Guided Spiritual Formation with the Dean of Students (Guided Spiritual Formation Coordinator) and it will appear on their enrolment forms as an Internal unit with the codes MC149E, F, G and H. It is especially important for Accreditation students that they continue in Guided Spiritual Formation through a total of eight semesters. These additional semesters will cost nothing to students, unless a student chooses to attend a group led by a visiting facilitator.

Bachelor of Theology (ACT) Morling Three- and Four-Year Awards The standard Morling Three- and Four-Year Awards require the completion of particular units. The Graduate in Christian Ministries (Advanced) is for students seeking to fulfil Baptist Accreditation requirements and for those seeking the same training as Baptist ministers. A statement of requirements is available in this Planning Guide (see the table of contents). Make your own photocopy of these requirements. Morling Three-Year Award The standard Morling award Graduate in Christian Ministries requires the completion of particular units. Usually these requirements are met within the structure of any of the 3-year ACT awards, such as the BTh or BMin. A statement of requirements is available in this Planning Guide (see the table of contents). Make your own photocopy of these requirements. The twenty-fifth unit will be taken in the third year. BTh course requirements The BTh requires the completion of 24 semester-length units, each uniformly worth four credit points, hence a total of 96 credit points. The 18 units listed below are compulsory. The remaining six units are electives: LA004a/b New Testament Greek (two units/each worth four credit points) and/or LA003a/b Biblical Hebrew (if two languages are taken, then one counts as two elective units). Bachelor of Christian Studies (ACT) The Bachelor of Christian Studies provides tertiary students with a program of theological studies in order to apply a Christian perspective to their life in the world, including their professional and vocational life. The BCS may be completed by full-time or part-time study. The minimum period of study is three years and the maximum is nine years. BCS course requirements The entrance requirement is qualification into and Australian university. Mature age entry is possible for students who are 21 years of age or more. Graduate Diploma of Divinity The Graduate Diploma of Divinity is a one year full time equivalent course (32 credit points), and articulates into the MDiv. The Master of Divinity (MDiv) is a three year full time equivalent course (96 credit points). Should GradDipDiv students wish to proceed to the MDiv it is possible to receive up to 32 credit points advanced standing. Students transferring to the MDiv will surrender their GradDip if it has been awarded. Eligibility The MDiv and GradDip require a non-theological degree from a recognised university. Graduates in theology are not eligible to enrol. Except for those candidates who have a tertiary qualification taught in English, international candidates whose first language is not English will be required to sit an IELTS test. For candidates wishing to enrol in the MDiv or GradDipDiv, an overall score of 7.0 is required with at least 7.0 in each of Reading and Writing and 6.5 in each of Listening and Speaking. Master of Divinity Full details are provided above (see the table of contents). Graduate Diploma of Divinity This course is intended to provide a one-year (full-time equivalent) program of studies in the Christian faith for graduates with no formal qualifications in theological studies. It aims to: provide candidates with the biblical and theological/historical foundations of the Christian faith, which may serve as the framework within which other Christian studies may be undertaken enable candidates to reflect on aspects of Christian faith and practice according to their interests serve the churches and theological institutions in their commitment to the theological education of the laity. Course requirements The minimum period of study is two semesters. After four years candidature will lapse unless special provision is granted by the Board of Delegates of the ACT. The GradDipDiv consists of 32 credit points (eight units). Units are chosen from the MDiv but normal ACT unit prerequisites for the MDiv do not apply. at least eight credit points (two units) from introductory OT and NT units: OT501 Old Testament Foundations OT502 Old Testament Prophets & Writings NT501 Content and Setting of the Gospel Tradition NT502 Early New Testament Church at least four credit points in Church History or Theology 20 credit points from any 500 or 600 level units in any field. Graduate Diploma in Christian Studies The Graduate Diploma in Christian Studies is a one year full time equivalent (32 credit points) course, which articulates into the Master of Arts (Christian Studies) (MACS). The MACS is a two year full time equivalent (64 credit points) course designed for students who wish to relate their previous tertiary study, and perhaps employment, to their Christian faith. Eligibility The MACS and GradDip Christian Studies require a non-theological degree from a recognised university. Course requirements Students initially enrol in the GradDip Christian Studies, rather than the MACS, and first complete the requirements of the GradDip. The GradDip requires 32 credit points, with 16 credit points drawn from core foundational 500 units. Another 12 credit points will come from the 600 units, including eight credit points in Theology. There is the possibility that 700 units can be included. Four credit points will come from the field of Integrative Studies in the form of a minor project. Each 500 and 600 unit is worth four credit points, and each 700 unit is worth eight credit points. To receive the MACS, the student proceeds to a further 32 credit points at the 600 level (note that up to 16 credit points can be selected from 700 units). At least eight credit points will be in units chosen from the field of Integrative Studies (IN), with a further eight credit points for the independent integrative study project which relates the student s non-theological studies to their Christian faith. Students who proceed to the MACS will need to surrender their GradDip upon completion of the MACS. Recommendations regarding unit choice Units available are the same as for the MDiv (500 and 600 units). It articulates into the Master of Arts (Ministry) which requires the completion of a further 32 credit points. Students who go on to complete the MA (Min) would need to surrender the GradDip Ministry if it has been awarded Eligibility The normal entry requirement is a BMin or equivalent. CHAPLAINCY AT MORLING Chaplaincy and Schools Ministry Training at Morling Morling is now offering chaplaincy and schools ministry training. Students can do a subject on Chaplaincy in Educational Settings (DM414/614), and do a Chaplaincy Major in an accredited Australian College of Theology award. This is an innovative subject, specifically designed for Primary and Secondary School Chaplaincy. This subject offers current and prospective school chaplains an opportunity to explore the practice and theology of chaplaincy in the contexts of both state and private and primary and secondary systems. The Chaplaincy major may be taken as a stand alone subject or as part of an ACT award. Requirements for the Morling Three-Year Award Graduate in Christian Ministries 1. Normally, satisfactory completion of one or more of MDiv, BMin, BTh or the AdvDipTh/Min of the ACT. 2. In conjunction with ACT requirements, the following specific ACT and Morling units are required: i. Ministry Formation or Patterns of Spiritual Formation ii. iii. iv. Field Education Theory and ACT Field Education Practical Guided Spiritual Formation (formerly called SEBL ) Four credit points in Missiology v. Four credit points in Ethics. vi Four credit points in Evangelism 3. All students will be required to complete at least one year of full-time study. Full-time study requires a high level of involvement in College life, including not less than ten classroom hours per week each semester. Full time students are required to attend regularly the weekly College Chapel services (at least 80%), Guided Spiritual Formation groups, all College retreats, two College partnership missions and one missions ReachOut conference. They are to be actively involved in the life and ministry of a local congregation, under supervision, for the duration of their College course. At the conclusion of each year students will acknowledge in writing that they have fulfilled these requirements. 4. All students will be required to complete at least 25 units, not including Guided Spiritual Formation. At least four units in Biblical exegesis are to be completed. For the purpose of this regulation, 700 level units will not be given additional weight. 44 Morling requirements

Requirements for the Morling Four-Year Award Graduate in Christian Ministries (Advanced) NSW & ACT Baptists seek to be guided by the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to recognise those whom God has called to serve the Churches as ministers. The evidence of such calling is seen especially in: The testimony of those who know them well and who can say their lives conform to the New Testament principles for Ministry In their own sense of call to ministry, and In their preparedness to equip themselves for the ministry needed It has been agreed that formal recognition of people who wish to be accredited with the Baptist Churches of NSW & ACT is unit to candidates fulfilling certain requirements appropriate to the ministry for which they are to be recognised. Accreditation involves the certification of people as suitable for ministry within the Baptist Churches of NSW & ACT. It recognises they have met certain personal, ministerial, academic and spiritual requirements, and they have the appropriate qualifications and credentials for such ministry. The units listed below have been carefully chosen to introduce accreditation candidates to key theological and practical issues they will encounter in ministry, and to begin to equip accreditation candidates to serve the Body of Christ in a competent and biblically-faithful manner 1. Normally, satisfactory completion of one or more of the Master of Divinity, the Bachelor of Ministry, the Bachelor of Theology, or the Advanced Diploma of Ministry of the ACT. 2. In conjunction with ACT requirements, the following specific ACT and Morling units will be required: i. Foundations of Pastoral Care and Pastoral Skills and Methods ii. Ministry Formation or Patterns of Spiritual Formation iii. A total of twelve credit points (usually three units) from the EM group ( Evangelism and Mission ) with eight credit points chosen from one area and four credit points from the other. Four credit points will be from either Foundations of Evangelism/Evangelism Principles or The Local Church & Global Mission (PC762). The remaining eight credit points will be chosen from: Evangelism: Church Dynamics and Growth, Foundations of Evangelism/Evangelism Principles, Applied Evangelism, Christian Apologetics, Church Planting, Church in Australian Society Mission: Theology of Mission, Cultural Anthropology, Study of Religion, The Local Church & Global Mission (PC762), Multicultural Ministry, Aid & Development, Alternative Religious Movements iv. Field Education (including Field Education Theory) v. Introductory Preaching and Advanced Preaching Skills vi. Guided Spiritual Formation (formerly called SEBL ) vii. New Testament Greek or Introduction to New Testament Greek or Biblical Hebrew viii Denominational (Baptist) Distinctives ix. Pastoral Leadership for 2 semesters (Morling) x. xi. At least 16 credit points (four units) of Biblical exegesis, two units in each of Old Testament and New Testament. In addition, a Bible or Theology unit will be completed in the final year. 3. All students are required to complete at least two years of full-time study. Full-time study requires a high level of involvement in College life. Students will normally complete at least one unit from each of Old Testament, New Testament, Theology/Ethics/Apologetics and Pastoral Studies over the final two years of study. 4. Full time students are required to attend regularly the weekly College Chapel services (at least 80%), Guided Spiritual Formation groups, all College retreats, two College partnership missions and one missions ReachOut conference. They are to be actively involved in the life and ministry of a local congregation, under supervision, for the duration of their College course. Parttime students will need to complete these requirements also, on a pro-rata basis. 5. The final year of the Graduate in Christian Ministries (Advanced) will normally be completed as a full time student, with a load of no less than seven units across the year, unless a student is granted special dispensation by the faculty. While students are strongly encouraged to study fulltime, ministry responsibilities will be considered when granting a Fourth Year Award &/or accreditation student permission to study part-time 6. All students are required to complete at least 32 units. For the purpose of this regulation, 700 level units will not be given additional weight. The MDiv research project will be counted as two units, and the BMin or BTh honours thesis will be counted as three. 7. Students (who do a full four year course with Morling), will be expected to complete all in the 10 units of the Safe Church Training. They should be able to do this within their unit s requirements. They would need to make sure that they did the necessary quarters of Guided Spiritual Formation attached to this training sometime in their study. 8. Students are required to complete 8 semesters of Guided Spiritual Formation in total. This equates to 4 years of Guided Spiritual Formation at a full-time rate. 9. Some students may be granted dispensation by the faculty to complete their fourth year by distance, on the basis of the recommendations outlined in Distance Recommendations below 10. The 32 units can be spread over a student s four year program, provided they complete a minimum of 6 units in their fourth year (and, in the case a student is completing 6 units in their fourth year, none of these units can be done as critical reflection units ) 11. It may be the case, occasionally, that a student may have to do more than 32 units in total, when they have not completed all the units on the list for the Morling Four-Year Award within the initial 32 units completed 12. If students undertake a fourth unit in any given semester, and they are also doing two MA units in that semester, they will be permitted to do that fourth unit as a critical reflection unit of 1,000 words (no critical reflection units will be offered to those doing less than four units in any given semester) 13. APPLICANTS WITH THE MASTER OF DIVINITY, BACHELOR OF MINISTRY, OR BACHELOR OF THEOLOGY (OR EQUIVALENT) FROM A NON-BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE OR SEMINARY 1. Such students are required to complete 12 units at Morling, and no differentiation is made between the weighting of postgraduate and undergraduate/internal units in this regard 2. If students undertake a fourth unit in any given semester, and they are also doing two MA units in that semester, they will be permitted to do that fourth unit as a critical reflection unit of 1,000 words (no critical reflection units will be offered to those doing less than four units in any given semester) 3. If students choose to do Baptist Distinctives as their fourth unit in any given semester, the writing requirements for that unit will be discounted to 4,000 words (we believe this unit is too important to be reduced to 1,000 words) 4. Those who study for accreditation after having completed a non-baptist theological award, should complete at least 4 semesters of SEBL (whether or not SEBL was done for ACT credit) 5. The total theological studies should at least cover the study requirements for the Morling Four- Year Award in Christian Ministry 6. It is recommended that students undertake the Graduate Diploma in Ministry in their final year, which includes 4 units which can be turned into the Master of Arts (in Theology or Ministry) DISTANCE EDUCATION DURING STUDIES FOR ACCREDITATION A.
