Notes for Guidance 1. Verify that the vehicle you are intending to licence as a Hackney Carriage/Private Hire Vehicle falls within the specified guidelines. Hackney Carriage vehicles MUST have a fare meter installed, MUST carry a plate with the licence number on the rear of the vehicle together with a Taxi roof sign. This type of vehicle can ply for hire in the street or a public place and Taxi ranks are provided for that purpose. Private Hire vehicles are licensed for pre booked journeys and not for plying for hire in the street or public place. An Operators licence is required for this type of vehicle. If in any doubt, contact the Licensing Team at the Cotswold District Council for advice on the type and intended use of your vehicle. Arrange MOT for vehicle; Arrange for a fare meter to be installed in vehicle if Hackney Carriage Licence required, together with a roof sign; Arrange for vehicle insurance to cover use as a Hackney Carriage/Private Hire Vehicle. (It is suggested that cover is not arranged to commence until after the vehicle has undergone the mandatory inspection by the Council); 2. Obtain the following for your vehicle:- Fire Extinguisher First Aid Kit No Smoking signs (70mm diameter) 3. (i) Complete the application form (for either Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle); (ii) Complete the application form (Operators) if you are licensing a Private Hire Vehicle; (iii) Contact the Cotswold District Council to arrange an inspection date for your vehicle. 4. When attending at the inspection you should have with you:- The completed application form (Vehicle) The Operator Licence application form, if applicable (Private Hire Operators) The registration document for the vehicle (V5/Log Book) or proof of purchase (sales invoice) The MOT certificate for the vehicle (no older than 4 weeks between MOT and Council inspection. The appropriate fees Before the licence can be granted, positive proof of insurance must be produced, so if your vehicle passes the required tests you can then ask your insurance company to issue the appropriate insurance. You will then be issued with a Hackney Carriage Plate or Private Hire Vehicle Disc together with the appropriate written licences. Your attention is also drawn to the further conditions of licence details of which are issued before the grant of the appropriate licence.
