Name an application of interest?

70.6% of Guild member organizations use an LMS, and 79.5% of organizations with more than 5,000 workers use an LMS. Members are resoundingly positive in giving the LMS very high marks for its impact on their organizations. Specifically, 94.6% are convinced that a LMS is essential to their organization, 95.5% believe a LMS allows people to access learning more easily, and 94.3% assert that a LMS allows members to distribute better learning throughout the organization. Have you heard of open source? What open source apps do you use?

Advantages - less dependence on vendors, lower costs, ease of customization, communities, and better security. Disadvantages - often works in progress, not ready for the mainstream desktop, no long-term roadmap, only suitable for niche markets of expert users with programming experience. Often not easy to use, does not have documentation and less sophisticated. Regardless, there are several million enthused mainstream users who disagree because of the many opportunities generated by the more popular and mature OSS applications, e.g., Open Office, GrafPup, Firefox

ATutor - Open Source Web-based Learning Content Management System Claroline - Claroline is a free LMS Dokeos - elearning and course management web application efront - Open Source Learning Management System ILIAS - Open Source Learning Management System Moodle - Open Source Course Management System OLAT - Open Source Learning Management System Sakai Project - Collaboration and Learning Environment

Course Management System (CMS) or VLE Originally created by Martin Dougiamas Supports formal and informal learning Worldwide community of users who are very satisfied with: Roll out and implementation Ease of use, customization, + admin Ability to support learner-centered pedagogical models with a variety of activities and resources

In 2006, the Moodle community reported over 22,000 registered web sites offering close to 900,000 courses to over 9 million users. In less than 3 years, Moodle has doubled its user base with 47,503 registered sites with 26,385,046 users. Free, social networking tools, collaborative learning communities, and support social constructionist pedagogy

Software applications to develop e-learning content, primarily for the Web May be specifically for designing e-learning May be designed for other purposes on the web May create reusable learning objects (LO) that are SCORM and AICC compliant

An authoring tool is a software application used to create and package content deliverable to users as elearning. This content generally conforms to an international standard, such as SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) or AICC (CBT) (Aviation Industry CBT Committee) Distribution of content, includes: web, kiosk, interactive CD-ROM, and executable file.

Rapid e-learning Tools Courseware Authoring and e-learning Development Tools Simulation Tools Media Tools Combining and Deploying Authoring Tools

76% of Guild members (n=1400) use more than one Rapid e-learning Development tool, and 38.9% use four or more tools. Adobe Captivate enjoys a dominant market share position with over 62% of respondents that use Rapid e-learning, Courseware Authoring, or Simulations tools indicating that they use Captivate. The three most important features are that the tool allows content to be easily updated (72%), the learning curve is low relative to other tools (45.6%), and the tool outputs to Flash SWF files (43.6%). The three most important industry support factors are: the tool is used widely (67.4%), there are free online forums for support (52.4%), and the tool has free technical support (48.4%). The three most important integration and collaboration factors are that the tool is SCORM conformant, the tool integrates with leading learning management systems, and the tool allows easy sharing of content.
