Descriptive Summary Title: Dr. Frank G. Hayne Papers, 1911-1987 Dates 1911-1987 Bulk 1930-1982 Abstract: Frank George Hayne (1909-1984) was an African American dentist in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended Avery Institute, Immaculate Conception High School, Fisk University and Meharry Medical College. The majority of this collection is comprised of black and white photographs from disassembled scrapbooks of Hayne and his wife Anita (Cole) Hayne's family members. Most of the photographs are unidentified. The collection also contains correspondence and documents from Fisk University and Meharry Medical College (Nashville, Tennessee) Alumni Associations, in which Hayne was a member on their Executive Boards. Hayne attended Avery Institute, Immaculate Conception High School, Fisk University, and Meharry Medical College. Professionally, Hayne was affiliated with the National Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the South Carolina Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association. He was a member of the Beta Kappa Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and the Athenians. He was married to Anita Ruth Cole Hayne. Collection Overview The collection is divided into five series: Series 1: Biographical Documents contains drafts of wills for Dr. Hayne and his wife Anita, brief personal correspondence with greeting cards, and dismantled plaques and certificates awarded to Hayne for his professional and civic participation. Series 2: Academic Institutions and Affiliations documents Hayne's involvement with former academic institutions, Fisk University and Meharry Medical College (Nashville, Tennessee). Includes (dismantled) awards and certificates earned in recognition for his financial support. Also, contains materials and artifacts regarding Hayne's association with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Series 3: Hayne Family Materials includes materials pertaining to Hayne's wife Anita, various newspaper clippings (photocopied), religious ephemera, and programs collected by the family. Series 4: Photographic Materials contains mostly unidentifed photographs from disassembled scrapbooks collected by Dr. Hayne. Of note are two (2) sepia colored images of the Immaculate Conception student body, nuns, clergy and officials from the South Carolina Catholic Diocese in the school's court yard (circa 1928). Photographs are organized by decade, unless otherwise stated. Series 5: Oversize Materials documents Hayne's Fisk University undergraduate diploma (1931), "Licence to Practice Dentistry" certificate issued by the South Carolina State Dental Examiners (1936), and oversize group photograph from a National Dental Association banquet (1966). Box 1 Folder 1 Legal Documents: Last Will and Testament, 1980 Drafts of wills for Hayne and his wife, Anita Cole Hayne. Box 1 Folder 2 Correspondence: Letters and post cards, 1934-1971, and undated Includes letter (1971) from Ralph Wardlow, Principal of Vashon High School (St. Louis, Missouri), and Fisk alum, expressing the challenges and success of his position. Also includes a color print of the "Missouri State Champions Class "L" Division," (1971) featuring Wardlow. Box 1 Folder 3 Correspondence: Greeting cards, 1977, and undated Box 1 Folder 4 Awards, 1976-1987 Includes cards sent by Hayne to his wife.
