Introduction Your future in Electrical Engineering Every stage in the generation and distribution of electricity directly involves the Electrical Engineering Technician. You will be responsible for the design, operation and installation of all types of electrical operating equipment. You will also be responsible for everything from the control of industrial processes to domestic installation practice. INTEC offers three types of programmes, namely National Qualifications, Provider Programmes, and Agent Programmes: are credit bearing qualifications registered on the NQF and accredited by a Quality Assurance Body. are unique to INTEC and are designed to increase and enhance your skills and knowledge within your chosen field. are programmes and qualifications for which INTEC offers tuition, but where INTEC does not issue the final certificate (the agent body issues the final certificate). Basic Safety and Electrical Fundamentals Are you interested in working in the field of Electrical Engineering? This short course will prepare you for a rewarding career, as it teaches you the basics that you will need in order to work with electricity. Included in this course is a First Aid Level 1 qualification, accredited and recognised by the South African Red Cross Society. This course will help you to develop valuable life-skills, giving you the ability to help in an emergency situation, providing assistance until the emergency services can give the appropriate treatment. After completing this short course, you will be able to adhere to safety signs and regulations and apply basic health and safety legislation, which will contribute to a safe and healthy industry. Programme Type The Basic Safety and Electrical Fundamentals programme is a Provider Programme. Entrance Requirements Grade 9 (Std. 7) with Mathematics and Communication. If you do not meet the minimum entrance requirements, but you have 2 years relevant work experience, please contact your nearest INTEC branch to apply for possible admission to the course. Course Duration You should be able to complete this course within 4 to 6 months. 3
Course Content This course consists of the following topics: Applying health and safety to a work area Applying and maintaining safety in an electrical environment First Aid Demonstrating an understanding of the uses and safety aspects associated with flammable energy sources Understanding fundamentals of electricity Assessment Basic Safety and Electrical Fundamentals You are required to complete and submit an assignment to the College for marking. First Aid (Practical Component) You will need to submit 3 multiple-choice tests for First Aid Level 1, which will qualify you for your practical exam with the Red Cross Society. You will be given an application form, which you need to complete and send to INTEC College. We will arrange for you to take your exam at a Red Cross branch near you, and notify you of the exam date and venue. Practical exams are held at Red Cross centres countrywide four times a year. Award After you successfully complete your formative assignment and your practical exam with the Red Cross Society, you will receive your INTEC Short Course Certificate in Basic Safety and Electrical Fundamentals. Electrical Installation This short course will help you to understand the principles and teach you all you need to know about Electrical Installation. This theoretical short course will enhance your current expertise in the electrical engineering field, especially in installation. You will be able to evaluate and apply essential methods to technical operational systems required in this field. Take the opportunity to equip yourself with the latest knowledge required by the industry. Programme Type The Electrical Installation programme is a Provider Programme. Entrance Requirements Grade 11 (Std. 9) with relevant electrical subjects, or N2 with Mathematics and Electrical Trade Theory. If you do not meet the minimum entrance requirements, but you have 2 years relevant work experience, please contact your nearest INTEC branch to apply for possible admission to the course. Course Duration You should be able to complete this course within 4 to 6 months. FREE textbook You will receive your own copy of SABS 10142 Occupational Health & Safety Act/Regulations. 5
Course Content This course consists of the following topics: Understanding basic electrical and mechanical engineering principles Applying the principles of energy efficiency Designing and constructing a three-phase circuit Installing and commissioning three-phase AC machines and control gear Understanding of basic programmable logic controllers (PLCs) Wire and commission three phase electrical circuits. Assessment You are required to complete and submit an assignment to the College for marking. Award After you successfully complete the course, you will receive your INTEC Short Course Certificate in Electrical Installation. Award After you successfully complete the course, you will receive your INTEC Short Course Certificate in Electrical Maintenance and Repair.
