Role of The High Speed Broadband Infrastructure in the University Domain www.upt.al
History of Polytechnic University of Tirana (PUT) 1951 1957 1991 2007 PUT was founded under the name of Polytechnic Institute State University of Tirana was founded and Polytechnic Institute was introduced as its instance PUT was separated from State University of Tirana PUT obtained the independent status Reform in academic system: PUT has three new entities: Faculty of Information Technology Institute of Energy, Water and Environment Institute of Geosciences www.upt.al
Structure of Polytechnic University of Tirana (PUT) Polytechnic University of Tirana has 6 faculties and 2 research institutes. Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) Faculty of Civil Engineering (FCE) Faculty of Geology and Mine (FGM) Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEE) Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) Faculty of Mathematical Engineering and Physical Engineering (FMEPE) Institute of Energy, Water and Environment (IEWE) Institute of Geosciences (IGEO)
Education in PUT ICT diplomas The curricula of ICT diplomas achieves a balance: between theory and practice between hardware and software, thus enabling new engineers to work successfully not only as programmers but also in many sectors where all kind of ICT technology is used.
Education in PUT ICT diplomas Good results showed in wellacceptance of our engineers from big companies are a proof of the success of our curricula. Moreover, the ICT curricula is fully compatible with the best polytechnic schools in Europe, like in Italy, Germany, France, etc.
Education in PUT PhD school PUT is working to improve and increase the number of third study level of students (PhD programs), and these days we are preparing the start of the PhD school in ICT. Involvement of PhD students will have a strong positive impact in research, in particular in our involvement in the implementation of European projects.
Research on ICT High speed Optical Communication Technologies Communication Networks and Protocols Grid Computing Infrastructures P2P Networks and Applications Sensor, Actor and Ad-Hoc Networks High-Speed Networks Heterogeneous Wireless Networks Distance Learning Systems Multimedia Communications in the next generation networks, Optimization methods in Wireless Technology
Research on ICT Numeric System Design such as Microprocessor, using FPGA and XILINX Architecture Programmable Electronic Systems Integrated WEB Applications in Heterogenic Hardware and Software Platforms Design Object Oriented Programming Languages, Java Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks
Projects on Information Technology Participation in SEE-GRID-SCI, continuation in Southeastern Europe of the SEE-GRID initiative Participation in SEERA-EI, a project dedicated to the analysis of strategies for development of e-infrastructure in countries of the region and preparation of recommendations for their harmonization Preparation for participation in HPC-SEE project, focused in exploitation of high performance computing capacities in Balkan region by research communities, with special focus in physical, chemical and life sciences. TEMPUS projects as VICES for creation of videoconferencing platforms in the region for facilitation of cross border teaching. FP7 project ICT-WEB-PROMS for training and dissemination of FP7 concepts and practices. FP7 project IDEALIST2011 for dissemination of requests for partnerships for preparation of project-proposals for FP7, a consortium of 65 countries.
PUT as a partner on ICT projects Role of PUT and particularly FIT in these projects is a complicated one. First, we must do very qualified work to keep the infrastructure running, connected with the regional one, and being accessible for its users. Second, we must give necessary support for development of applications and running of applications in the regional infrastructure to all teams from different scientific areas that are interested to work in. Third, we must think for our own applications. Because of this complexity, PUT and FIT are open for collaboration with all interested research and development parties.
PUT as an important partner on ICT for the country The importance of all these projects: First, they are important for improving the computing and network infrastructure and for strengthening the research and development in the country. Second, they promote complex studies and applications covering all important areas of research. Third, they provide a strong contribution for the integration of our research communities with European structures and the European Research Area.
International collaborations on ICT PUT has relations with a lot of universities in Europe: Italy: Polytechnic University of Turin, Polytechnic University of Bari, University of Florence, etc. Germany: Technical University of Darmstadt, University of Berlin, Technical University of Aachen, etc. France: Technical University of Compiegne. Greece: NTUA: National Technical University of Athens. Japan: Fukuoka Institute of Technology. etc..
High Speed Broadband What we need more?? Highest Speed Broadband Infrastructure.. What is broadband? The term broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access that is always on. It allows a user to send emails, surf the web, download images and music, watch videos, join a web conference, use real time applications, and much more Broadband can overcome geographical and financial barriers to provide access to a wide range of educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities and resources.
High Speed Broadband The high speed transmission technologies of broadband connection include: ADSL SDSL Wireless Broadband Internet Connection Satellite Broadband Internet Connection Cable Broadband Internet Connection Fiber Optic Broadband Internet Connection The introduction of broadband technologies, including but not limited to DSL, fiber, satellite, and fixed and mobile wireless, has enabled traditional and new forms of communication to become a reality throughout the world.
High Speed Broadband High Speed broadband access in the University domain enables: High speed Campus Networks using different technologies and launching diverse applications The University increasingly delivers educational and research material online, such as lecture notes and electronic journals. Increase the access to Information, sharing network resources, launching e-learning platform, e-lab application and specific content. Participation in national and regional efforts to promote academic connectivity and campus networks
High Speed Broadband National and Regional Research and Education Networks Provide a state of the art infrastructure to support teaching, learning and research at national and regional levels Cross-border connectivity is needed between universities Creation of the hubs for researching and implementing new and advanced network services
High Speed Broadband Participation in regional and International Networks of Universities Common curricular frameworks, including internet-based courses Investigation into appropriate technologies and mechanisms for distance learning Joint provision of teaching, sharing of research materials and coordination of teaching programmes
High Speed Broadband Advanced infrastructure for scientists and researchers: Creation of common high speed and dedicated infrastructure for research projects, access to information, video communication, etc University Role in Broadband Help government and country to adopt policies that meet development challenges Establish ICT policy research Participate in global and regional initiatives and knowledge networks in ICT policy Create more space for teaching and learning ICT policy
International ICT conferences PUT has close collaboration with well known specialists worldwide, both Albanian and internationals, and foresees the organization of an international conference in 2011 NBiS-2011: The 14-th International Conference on Network-Based Information Systems NBiS- 2011 will be held on PUT, Tirana, Albania. From 1998, NBiS has successfully held the international conference every year where high quality papers are presented.
International ICT conferences NBiS in PUT NBiS was promoted to an International Conference and the 10-th NBiS was held in Regensburg, Germany in 2007 as International Conference. NBiS is becoming a very important event for network research community and is improved every year in quality and quantity. The 12-th NBiS was held at Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), USA, from August 19 to August 21, 2009. The 13-th NBiS will be held at Takayama, Gifu, Japan from September 15 to September 17, 2010.
