Visit the NMTA web site at www.nmta.com and download the application packet. When selecting your driver candidates for the competition, consider the following elements: *Years of commercial driving experience; *Miles of commercial driving experience; *Number of commercial vehicle accidents; *Type of equipment driven and character of runs (intracity, intrastate, interstate); *Commercial driving awards; *Commercial 1 driving competitions; *Driver education and training; *Community involvement and civic programs; *Military record. Besides the aforementioned elements, your Driver of the Year candidate should be a well rounded person. Your applicant should be of good character, and a person whom you would be proud to have representing your company. Remember, the Nevada winner will go on to compete at the national level. So potentially, your driver candidate and your company could be showcased by the American Trucking Associations.
NMTA 511 GREAT WEST OFFERS LCV INSTRUCTOR TRAINING In 2004, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued enhanced training requirements for drivers of longer combination vehicles (LCV s), as well as for those instructors who train LCV drivers. FMCSA codified those requirements in the 49 CFR, Part 380. Part 380 defines an LCV as a combination of truck/tractor and two or more trailers or semi-trailers, with a gross vehicle weight greater than 80,000 pounds. Many NMTA member companies and other motor carriers operate vehicles which meet the LCV definition. Motor carriers need to be both cognizant of and compliant with the Part 380 requirements, because FMCSA investigators and their state counterparts are currently checking LCV driver and instructor qualifications during safety audits. If your company needs to ensure its compliance with Part 380, Great West Casualty Company has a training opportunity for you. Great West will be presenting a short Train the Trainer seminar on the LCV training requirements. The class will be held June 26, 2007 from 0800 to Noon, at the Associated General Contractors (AGC) training room, 150 N. Durango Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89145. The registration fee will be $30 made payable to Great West Casualty Company, and seating is limited to 30 participants. The point of contact at Great West is Kevin Skow at 1 (800) 628-4416, press 2 for safety services, then press 3 for Kevin. law. This concludes a four legislative session long struggle by motor carrier advocates to gain more flexibility in the payment of truck and bus registration fees. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Motor Carrier Division will now set varying dates for the registration of vehicles which weigh over 26,000 pounds. AB 5 will also allow DMV, Motor Carrier Division to set the dates for installment payments by regulation, instead of requiring payments on dates currently set in statute. AB 5 was sponsored by Assemblyman Joe Hardy, and promulgated by DMV to help spread the fleet registration work load more evenly throughout the year. NMTA supported the bill as a measure to reduce the financial stress experienced by motor carriers when registration fees are due. NMTA and DMV personnel were present in the Governor s office during the official bill signing.
