Outline of Research Interests Performance and reliability evaluation of computer systems and networks Stochastic modelling Discrete event simulation Detailed Research Interests Main Topic Methodology My main research topic is the quantitative modelling of computer systems and networks, and in particular the efficient solution of the obtained models, i.e., the verification of their properties and the computation of their performance indices. During the past years I have worked using a variety of formalisms, such as stochastic process algebras, queueing networks, stochastic Petri nets and stochastic automata, and a variety of solution techniques, both analytical and by simulation. 1
Contributions Other Topics Impact Current Teaching Activities During and after my Ph.D. I have worked on the development of both theories and tools which are able to identify classes of models, expressed as a cooperation of components (composition of processes), that can be solved in computationally efficient ways, either by product-form decomposition, in which, given some structural properties of the components and their cooperation, it is possible to efficiently derive the steady-state probabilities of the composed stochastic models looking only to the components in isolation, or by states space aggregation (lumping), in which states of the model are partitioned according to an equivalence relation. Moreover, I have contributed to the development of the notion of conditional product-form, which shows that product-forms and states space aggregation theories are indeed related. and have shown examples on the applicability of those theoretical results to the performance modelling of realistic systems. Besides the aforementioned core topics, I worked also on other areas, such as the translation of models expressed in a high-level hierarchical formalism to BCMP networks, the modelling and optimisation of garbage collection policies and packets fragmentation in wireless networks using matrix-geometric techniques, the use of semi-markov models and simulation to devise a heuristic for energy consumption optimisation in ARQ protocols, the use of formal methods and process algebras to evaluate the resistance of mobile networks to jamming and of probabilistic model checking to evaluate the performances of cognitive wireless networks and formally verify some of their properties. I have also contributed to a work on the formal specification and verification of firewall rules and on the practical implementation of these concepts in a firewall specification tool. All the aforementioned activities led to international peer-reviewed publications. The techniques that I contributed to devise leads to a significant reduction (from exponential to polynomial) in the computational complexity of the solution of new classes of stochastic models which can be used in the analysis of computer and networking systems. Moreover I have developed software that was used by tools written by research groups of other universities. For what concerns ongoing research, I am currently working on product-form theories and time-reversed stochastic processes. In a broader perspective, one of my long-term goal is to determine if there is a common structural property of all the models in productform, including those that don t satisfy the hypothesis of current results in the literature. 2015 Adjunct Professor (professore a contratto) for the System Administration Lab course at the B.Sc. in Computer Science, Ca Foscari University of Venice. 2013,2014 Teaching Assistant for the Foundations of Programming Languages and the Performance and Reliability of Computer Systems courses at the M.Sc. in Computer Science, Ca Foscari University of Venice. 2011,2012,2013 Teaching Assistant for the Operating Systems course at the B.Sc. in Computer Science, Ca Foscari University of Venice. 2011 Teaching Assistant for the Probability course at the B.Sc. in Computer Science, Ca Foscari University of Venice. 2
