MBCHB 3 Paediatrics and Child Health Rotation Learning objectives The overall objective is to introduce the student to basic paediatric clinical tools. By the end of the 4 week rotation the student will have acquired basic skills in; 1. Communicating with children, their parents and families 2. Paediatric history taking 3. Examination of the child 4. Documentation of various clinical notes 5. Basic techniques on infection prevention 6. Organization of a paediatric in-patient service The rotation will be monitored through Signing the attendance list At least one marked clerkship End term assessment Clinical on history taking and general examination Student Availability Monday 9-11 am Tuesday Combined Lectures Thursday 9-11 am Friday 9-11 am

Duration of rotation - 4 week bocks. Suggested Schedule to be modified by wards as needed Week 1 Communication with children, other health workers, interview techniques, ward etiquette, ward organization and history taking Skills Lab: Listening to Respiratory breath sounds in the skills laboratory Homework-Self Learning: Anthropometry, assessment of nutritional status using the WHO growth standards Week 2 General examination, Case presentation on general examination Skills Lab Listening to CVS sounds Homework- Self Learning: Assessment of developmental milestones homework Week 3 Examination of the respiratory system and the abdomen Case based discussion- child with fever, child with anaemia Skills Laboratory - intradermal, i/v and i/m injections, N/G tube, NG tube feeding, suction, urinary bladder catheterization Self-leaning- Clerk and present case to SHO/Consultants on the wards Week 4 Examination of the Cardiovascular system Examination of CNS(motor and sensory system) End of Rotation assessment History taking and General examination.
