Conference Speakers Gennaro Bernile Gennaro Bernile received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 2006. He has worked for the Office of Economic Analysis at the SEC, and for Forensic Economics Inc. He is currently on the faculty at the University of Miami. His research investigates venture capital, mergers, and options backdating. Utpal Bhattacharya Utpal Bhattacharya is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has published numerous scholarly articles and is well-known for his research on insider trading. He was a member of the Task Force to Modernize Security Regulation in Canada. Sharon Brown-Hruska Sharon Brown-Hruska is a Vice President of NERA Economic Consulting. Prior to joining NERA, Dr. Brown-Hruska was a commissioner of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). She has also held academic positions at George Mason University School of Management and at the A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University. While at the CFTC, she served as part of the Presidents Working Group on Financial Markets, alongside the Secretary of the Treasury and the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. Michael Cahill Michael Cahill is the President and Chief Operating Officer of the Options Clearing Corporation. He is a member of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association where he serves on the Operations Committee. He is also a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Financial Markets Working Group, and the Futures Industry Association - Operations Division. Gerald Dwyer Jerry Dwyer is a Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta where he is the director of th Center on Financial Innovation and Financial Stability. Dr. Dwyer has been on the faculty of Texas A&M University, Emory University, The University of Houston, and Clemson University. His research has been published in leading academic finance and economics journals, and in reviews published by the Federal reserve Banks of Atlanta and St. Louis.

Fabrizio Ferri Fabrizio Ferri received his Ph.D. from New York University in 2005. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. He has worked for Stern Stewart in the Economic Value Added Group and as a tax consultant with Coopers and Lybrand. His research encompasses a number of corporate governance issues including compensation practices, the role of boards of directors, and the effectiveness of shareholder activism. Thomas George Tom George is the Bauer Professor of Finance at the University of Houston. He is currently director of the AIM Center for Investment Management at the Bauer College of Business. He has published numerous articles on market microstructure, insider trading, and behavioral biases in asset pricing. He is also the recipient of several awards for excellence in MBA and Executive MBA teaching. John Griffin John Griffin is an Associate Professor of Finance at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas. Prior to that he has taught at Arizona State University and the Yale School of Management. Professor Griffin is the author of a number of papers on Empirical Asset Pricing and International Finance. Frank Hatheway Frank Hatheway is Chief Economist at NASDAQ OMX, where he has helped develop NASDAQ s opening and closing auctions. Prior to joining Nasdaq, he served as an Economic Fellow at the SEC and president of Hatheway & Company, an options trading firm. He also worked as a professor at Penn State University, where he published research on market microstructure in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Intermediation, and other scholarly journals. Charles Jones Charles Jones is Professor of Finance and Economics at the graduate School of Business of Columbia University. He has served as a member of the Nasdaq Economic Advisory Board, a Visiting Economist at The New York Stock Exchange, and a Visiting Scholar at the New York Federal Reserve Bank. He has published numerous scholarly articles on market microstructure and on short selling.

Steven Kaplan Steve Kaplan is currently the Neubauer Family Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance at the University of Chicago s Booth Graduate School of Business. He sits on the board of directors of Columbia Acorn Funds and Morningstar and is a member of the investment advisory board of Sterling Capital Partners. Professor Kaplan was named one of the top 12 business school teachers in the U.S. by Business Week in 1994. He has published numerous scholarly articles and has served as an associate editor of several academic journals. Arthur Laby Arthur Laby is an associate professor in the Rutgers School of Law. Prior to joining the faculty, he was an associate at the law firm of Wilmer, Cutler, and Pickering, where he practiced in the areas of commercial and securities law. Professor Laby then served for almost ten years on the staff of the SEC, most recently as Assistant General Counsel. His research focuses on fiduciary relationships, conflicts of interest, corporate governance, and securities enforcement. D. Timothy McCormick Tim McCormick is currently an economist in the SEC s Office of Economic Analysis. Prior to that, he worked as an economist for Nasdaq and the NASD. Dr. McCormick s research is in the area of market microstructure. His work is published in a number of finance journals, including the Journal of Finance, and the Journal of Financial Economics. Jeffrey Ng Jeffrey Ng received a Ph.D. in Accounting from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 2008. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Accounting at MIT. He is a CPA and a CFA. He has worked for the Monetary Authority of Singapore. His research focuses on liquidity and disclosure. Maureen O Hara Maureen O Hara is the Robert Purcell Professor of Management at the Johnson School of Cornell University. She has served as president of the American Finance Association and Executive editor of the Review of Financial Studies. She is chairman of the board of Investment technology Group (ITG) and is a former chairman of the board of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester. She is the author of numerous scholarly articles and of the book Market Microstructure Theory.

James Overdahl Jim Overdahl is currently the chief economist for the SEC. Before joining the commission, he was chief economist for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He has also worked as a Senior Financial Economist in the Risk Analysis Division in the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. He is the coauthor, with Robert Kolb, of three textbooks: Financial Derivatives, Understanding Futures Markets, and Futures, Options, and Swaps. Erik Sirri Erik Sirri is Director of the Division of Trading and Markets at the SEC. In this role, he is responsible to the commission for the administration of all matters relating to the regulation of stock and options exchanges, national securities associations, brokers, dealers, clearing agencies, and credit rating agencies. He is on leave from Babson College where he is Professor of Finance. He has previously served as chief economist of the SEC. He has served as Governor of the Boston Stock Exchange and a member of the regulatory board of the Boston Options Exchange. Chester Spatt Chester Spatt is the Pamela R. And Kenneth B. Dunn Professor of Finance at Carnegie Mellon University. He was Chief Economist of the SEC from 2004-2007. He served as president of the Western Finance Association in 1995-1996, and president of the Society for Financial Studies from 1993 to 1996. Professor Spatt was a member of the the Nasdaq Economic Advisory Board and served as chair in 2002. He was Executive Editor of the Review of Financial Studies from 1990-1993. René Stulz René Stulz hold the Everett Reese Chair of Banking and Monetary Economics at the Ohio State University. He is past president of the American Finance Association and the Western Finance Association. He was Editor of the Journal of Finance for 12 years. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles in finance and economics. In 2004, Dr. Stulz was named one of the 100 most influential people in finance by Treasury and Risk Management magazine.

Charles Trzcinka Charles Trzcinka is the James and Virginia Cozad Professor of Finance in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He is a former Senior Economist with the SEC. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles in major finance and economics journals. His research on mutual funds and institutional money management has been widely quoted in the press, and he has testified before congress on mutual fund competition. James Vickery James Vickery received his Ph.D. in economics in 2004 from MIT. He is on leave from his position as a Research Economist at the Federal reserve Bank of New York, and is currently teaching at the Stern School of Business at New York University. He conducts research on real estate finance and on banking and financial institutions.
