In this presentation there are summarized the results of the servers consolidation stream. 3
Virtualization business case Cost savings on Windows servers Removal of old HW with expensive support Optimization of selected SW components (various OPEX savings) Lower hardware acquisition costs in the future Saving of computer room resources electricity, cooling and floor space Better HW utilization, Easier maintenance, more efficient FTE utilization Qualitative improvements Speed up of infrastructure provisioning (reduced from weeks to hours) Availability increased by design (improvement to 99,9%) Standardization design based on virtual infrastructure templates Safer change management roll-back possibility Construction of disaster recovery data center with twin center capabilities Flexibility Resiliency and efficiency by transforming the data center into an internal cloud 4
Windows Consolidation Feasibility analysis Measurement 4 weeks of continuous measurement ~4 GB of measured data online sent to VMware laboratories for detailed analysis 36 of 38 servers are suitable for virtualization Over 94% of all Windows servers are good candidates for virtualization Several consolidation scenarios produced Measured final results after excluding unsuitable candidates Host Name % CPU Utilizatio n CPU Queue Disk Utilization % Busy Disk Queue Pages MB Per Second Network Bytes Per Second Industry Average 5,43 0,89 5,06% 0,64% 28,81 380.585 UCR Servers 4,3 0,35 3,86% 0,06% 8,67 15.899 Measurement proved our expectations => UCTB has very good potential for virtualization and consolidation of Windows servers 5
Windows Consolidation Parameters Reduction of 92% of physical servers 36 physical servers 3 physical servers Design constraints Guaranteed quality of service Availability the same or better than existing Guaranteed computing resources Disaster recovery design Flexibility & future scalability 6
Migration process Migration Summary 30 servers migrated in less than 2 months Consolidation ratio expected 10:1 Average time needed for 1 server is 2 hours Migration details - VMware Enterprise Converter Cold migration process Physical servers resides in shutdown state for 3 weeks after migration for quick rollback procedures Migration details hardware configuration Two independent locations with DR capability (HA, DRS, VMotion in each location) ESX v. 3.5 HP BL460c (2x Xeon 3GHz, 32GB RAM, 2x GBE, 2x FC) Blade Chassis HP c7000 (2 x Cisco Catalyst 3020, 2 x Brocade 4/12 SAN switch) SAN Storage EMC Clariion CX3-80 (MirrorView protection, 1.6 TB on each side) 7
Architecture design 8
Project Summary Virtualization in UniCredit Tiriac Bank is a success All servers identified in scope could be virtualized Virtualization caused performance improvement on all servers Hardware ESX utilization was better than expected VMotion technology allowed to service ESX farm without downtime Disaster Recovery solution was implemented as requested by the business Improved servers provisioning process (less than 5 minutes) No production incidents caused by migration Plans for the future Higher consolidation ratio (expected 20:1) Migration of ~60 more physical Windows Servers till end of 2009 Implementation of Site Recovery Manager and VMware View For new solutions, virtualization is becoming preferred architecture pattern Plans to test and to upgrade VI to the new release, vsphere 9
