Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credential Program Admission to Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credential Program Students who wish to pursue an Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credential must meet the following criteria and follow the prescribed procedures for admission to the program. The admission procedures are designed to identify students that are committed to the discipline and profession and to maximize their opportunities to become competent and effective adapted physical education teachers. Option 1 Admission to the CSUSB Teacher Preparation Program in the Department of Kinesiology Option 2 Currently hold a valid Credential for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Physical Education. Option 3** Currently hold a valid Multiple Subject, Standard Secondary with a major or minor in PE, Standard Elementary with an academic major or minor in PE, Standard Early Childhood, Special Secondary in PE, General Secondary, General Junior High School, General Elementary, or General Kindergarten-Primary Credential. Option 4 *** Currently hold a valid Educational Specialist Instruction, Standard Special Education, Ryan Specialist Instruction, or Special Education Services Credential with a Special Class Authorization ** Individuals holding these prerequisite credentials may need additional Kinesiology course work. *** Individuals holding these prerequisite credentials are required to complete physical education subject matter competency classes. See table 1. Note: Options 3 and 4 Candidates must meet with the APE coordinator discuss about their physical education subject matter competency requirements.

Admission to Program In order to be admitted to the Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credential Program, candidates must fully complete a Program Admission File (PAF). Only students admitted to the university can apply to the credential program. Meet with your academic advisor. Attend a group advising session or schedule an individual advising session with an APE Specialist Credential Coordinator Required Student Teaching Hours 1. Concurrent student teaching in regular physical and adapted physical education is an essential part of the APE credential. 2. Evidence of one-year of effective teaching behaviors in adapted physical education is required for any candidate that did not complete student teaching in APE. Evidence of effective teaching is required from a supervisor in Special Education, a coordinator of Adapted Physical Education or Principal where appropriate. The evidence shall appear in a letter written on the school letterhead with a signature and contact information of the supervisor. 3. A valid California teaching credential authorizing the teaching of physical education is necessary to earn an APE credential. Adapted Physical Education Competency Requirements For Multiple Subject Credential and Education Specialist Credential Holders: Complete 17 units of coursework (see below) or pass California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) in PE (all parts): CSUSB Kinesiology (KINE) or equivalent courses (subject to transcript and program syllabus verification). Select 17 units from the following courses with nine units from the core and eight units from pedagogy courses: KINE 479/480 Qualitative Biomechanics (5units) KINE 325 Motor Development (4units) Core Kinesiology Courses (9 units) Pedagogy courses (select 8 units) KINE 472 KINE 473 KINE 324 Program Design in Physical Education (4 units) or Instructional Strategies in Physical Education (4 units) Psychology of Physical Activity (4 units) If you pass the CSET then you complete the Adapted PE sequence.
