Southern Arkansas University Tech Spring 2014 Progress Continues on the New Student Center Photo by Camden News Rodney E. Slater to Speak at Black History Celebration This newsletter provides information to SAU Tech employees. If you do Rodney E. Slater, a na ve of Marianna, Arkansas and former US Secretary of Transporta on under Bill Clinton, is the guest speaker for the 2014 Black History Celebra on. Slater now spends his me assis ng clients with transporta on system needs and promo ng safe, efficient interna onal transporta on infrastructure. During his me with the US government, he worked on the Transporta on Equity Act for the 21 st Century which guaranteed a record $200 billion in surface transporta on investment through 2003. He also served as the administrator of the Federal Highway Administra on and was the agency s first African American administrator. Slater is married and has one daughter, and he and his family currently reside in Washington, D.C. The SAU Tech Black History event will be held on February 21, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the Charles O. Photo: Dr. Corbet Lamkin, SAU Tech Chancellor, and Connie Wilbur, Human Resources Aerojet Rocketdyne SAU Tech Career Coach Receives Arkansas Works Award Temeke Butler, an Arkansas Works Career Coach housed at SAU Tech, recently received the Arkansas Works Career Coach of the Year award during a ceremony held in Hot Springs. Temeke received the award for helping raise the college going rate at Bearden High School from 31.8 percent to 65.9 percent. The Arkansas Works Program, in partnership with SAU Tech and local public schools, provides assistance and informa on to students and their parents in the areas of academic tutoring, career counseling, mentoring, financial aid guidance, and other supports necessary for career and educa onal access and reten on. Temeke serves as a career coach at Bearden and Stephens high schools.

Page 4 SAU Tech Registrar Speaks at TACRAO Event Wayne Banks, SAU Tech Registrar, a ended the Tennessee Associa on of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (TACRAO) annual mee ng on November 20 in Memphis Tennessee as the college s SACRAO Representa ve. While there, Banks spoke to the TACRAO membership on the benefits of SACRAO and Higher Educa on in general. He delivered a presenta on on FERPA, the Family Educa onal Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. Banks is on the SACRAO organiza on s execu ve commi ee filled the posi on as their Vice President for Records and Registra on. VC for Information Technology Speaks at MLK Event Valerie Wilson, Vice Chancellor for Informa on Technology at SAU Tech, was invited by Cledis Stuart at Southern Arkansas University to be the guest speaker during the Mar n Luther King Jr. events on January 20, 2014. Valerie said, It was a real honor to be invited to speak at an event celebra ng the life of Mar n Luther King Jr. Blue & You Foundation Award Funds CNA Scholarships The Arkansas Blue and You Founda on recently funded the college s Caring for the Elderly Project for the second me in the amount of $109, 620. The funding is solely used for student nursing assistant scholarships. Regina Ellis, SAU Tech Allied Health Instructor said, The Arkansas Blue and You Founda on has funded this effort at SAU Tech once before, and the project was very successful in training a large number of nursing assistants. Page 5 GED Testing Now Cost a Fee SAU Tech Adult Educa on services are offered in five coun es (Calhoun, Ouachita, Columbia, Dallas and Cleveland) and provide GED prepara on, basic skill improvement, job readiness training, and training in Microso programs through the Microso IT Academy. The GED exam now costs $16. However, the GED prep classes are FREE. For informa on on adult educa on in your area, call 870.837.4001 or go to www.sautech.edu SAU Tech Nationally Ranked Southern Arkansas University Tech was recently included in the Washington Monthly s 2013 Community College Rankings for the following areas: Ac ve & Collabora ve Learning, Student Effort, Academic Challenge, Student Faculty Interac on, First Year Reten on Rate, Three Year Gradua on /Transfer Rate and Creden als Awarded per 100 Full Time Equivalent Students. The Washington Monthly cited Southern Arkansas University Tech as number 37 out of the top 50 community colleges na onwide. Southern Arkansas University Tech was the only community college from Arkansas on the list that included community college giants such as Miami Dade Community College. Dr. Corbet Lamkin, Chancellor of SAU Tech, had this to say, We are pleased with the na onal recogni on of the hard work and effort put forth by our students and our faculty and staff. Southern Arkansas University Tech is a public two year college with an enrollment of around 2,000 students. The college was created in 1968 as a technical trainer for the area, and it maintains that mission today as well as offering transfer and online degrees. Page 6 Employees Volunteer Work Makes for State Recognition SAU Tech was recently awarded the Spirit of 110 Award given by the Arkansas Human Services Division of Volunteerism. The award is in special recogni on of the college s commitment to engaging volunteers to provide be er services to the people of Arkansas. Give yourself a pat on the back if you volunteer! You are making a difference in someone s life! Adult Education Director Certified Barbara Hamilton, Director of SAU Tech Adult Educa on, successfully completed the Na onal Adult Educa on training program as a Cer fied Manager in Program Improvement (CMPI). This training is part of the Leadership Excellence Academy offered by the Na onal Adult Educa on Professional Development Consor um. Barbara is now among the select few in the na on with the CMPI cer fica on. SAU Tech Student Designs Consortium Logo The Southwest Arkansas Community College Consor um selected SAU Tech Graphic Design student Alan Vargas s logo design to represent the consor um. The Presidents & Chancellors of the five colleges chose the logo from a group of logos submi ed by students in SAU Tech s graphic design program. Alan is a second year student at SAU Tech and works in the college communica ons office. Alan is from Lake Village.

Page 6 Leave it to Beaver Star Coming to Camden Distinguished Speaker Series March 17, 2014 Jerry Mathers Star of "Leave it to Beaver" You know, working isn t as much fun as I thought it would be. I wonder why older people do it so much? Beaver This is an example of the endearing words said by Jerry The Beaver Mathers, who remains an American ins tu on. Mathers is known by people throughout the world and was named by People Magazine as one of the most well known individuals in television history. Born on June 2, 1948 in Sioux City Iowa, Jerry's television and show business career began at the tender age of two when he did a Pet Condensed Milk commercial on the Colgate Comedy Hour. He con nued to work on many of the early 50 s television shows and in 1954, he made his movie debut co starring with Linda Darnell in This Is My Love. He then caught the a en on of Alfred Hitchcock who signed him for the 1955 film, The Trouble With Harry.. The budding young actor next appeared in two Bob Hope movies, The Seven Li le Foys and That Certain Feeling. Two movies with Alan Ladd followed, The Deep Six and Men of the Figh ng Lady. It was in 1957 however with the debut of the series Leave It To Beaver that Jerry entered the hearts and homes of America. An immediate success, the show gained na onal a en on and ran for six seasons, totaling 234 episodes. When it celebrated its 50th anniversary on October 4, 2007, the show became the longest running scripted show in television history. Currently shown on TV Land and in countries throughout the world, Leave it to Beaver has made Jerry an American Icon. His television movie, S ll the Beaver, was one of the top ten movies of the week for 1982 which led to the development of a new series en tled The New Leave It To Beaver. Jerry successfully completed filming 108 episodes which were syndicated and aired in all major domes c and foreign markets. As well as starring in the series, Jerry also directed mul ple episodes. Jerry s legi mate theater credits include Hairspray, Neil Simon Theater, Boeing, Boeing, Who s On First, and the na onal debut tour of So Long Stanley which played to standing room only houses across the country for 18 months.
