INNTouch SPECIAL EDITION SEPTEMBER 2011 Sierra Services Platform: An Introduction Today s libraries face a wide range of new challenges and emerging technological opportunities. While other marketplace solutions fall short of libraries demanding expectations, Innovative Interfaces Sierra Services Platform is the first system that offers complete ILS functionality in a modern, open-services approach. The library community continues to experience the impact of significant technological changes in addition to the changing needs of an expanding and evolving user base. Disruptive technologies, such as handheld computing devices, cloud computing, and the personal communication and information management they support, require that libraries interaction with users evolve. In the past, the ILS system was the single, discrete automation solution at libraries. Today, this functionality is still essential, but has to interoperate across multiple platforms and environments. Involved in social networks, multi-tasking, and technically savvy, a new generation of library users place new demands on libraries to be part of their world. The rapid shift to e-resources and the emergence of e-books means that users are expecting immediate and unlimited access to the content they need when they need it. Whether it s for an e-book patron or a do-it-yourself systems librarian, library technology must react more quickly and responsively than ever before. Despite the radical nature of the changes underway, libraries can now choose a complement of technologies that will help reinvent the nature of their services and deliver value well into the future. After working with thousands of libraries, Innovative knows that each library is different from its loan rules to its accounting codes to its concerns regarding privacy and data ownership. Every library needs the ability to customize service offerings, deploy technical infrastructure, and plan for changes in ways that address its unique mission in a community. COMPLETE, CUSTOMIZABLE ILS FUNCTIONALITY Full-featured library operations support Integrated resource management New, integrated, roles-based staff client Trusted, dependable performance POWER AND SCALE OF MODERN SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE Services-Oriented Architecture (SOA) design PostgreSQL open source relational database Lucene indexing engine Documented, flexible application programming interface (API) extension Cloud- and local-based Solid upgrade path INNTouch is published by Innovative Interfaces, Inc. 2011

Introducing the Sierra Services Platform The Sierra Services Platform provides complete ILS functionality with the power and scale of modern software architecture. As an open services platform, Sierra provides all the benefits of fully developed, stable business logic and integrated resource management on which thousands of libraries rely. Simultaneously, it includes several characteristics that result in unmatched flexibility to meet the everchanging needs of libraries and their users. THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE Sierra gives libraries the freedom to decide what they want to be. With Sierra s commitment to open services, libraries can choose which new services or functionality they want to offer and, equally as important, when and how best to implement them. Libraries can choose from Innovativedeveloped products, write their own custom applications, or share software among other Sierra libraries. Sierra design includes a modern Services-Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach that offers: Increased opportunities for open development with Innovative s partners and customer libraries Flexibility in methods (cloud-based, local, SaaS) A platform for rapid application development, device adoption, and resource independence After working with thousands of libraries, Innovative knows that each library is different from its loan rules to its accounting codes to its concerns regarding privacy and data ownership. DATA ACCESS SERVICES LAYER In the Sierra environment, the data access services layer provides a consistent set of interfaces to the database indexing tools. It also provides access to low-level resources maintaining persistence of key data structures that are exposed to high levels through a SOAP wrapper. BUSINESS LOGIC SERVICES LAYER Along with objects that handle all of the business rules, processes, and workflow logic that support the core functions of the library (circulation, cataloging, etc.), this layer will also offer newer functionality such as discovery and e-workflow. It is within this layer where authentication and authorization enforcement is applied. Objects in this layer are developed and maintained separately from user interface and application display management as well as lowerlevel resource interaction. This allows development activities in the higher and lower layers to be conducted independently and without impact on the underlying business logic supported by Sierra. PRESENTATION LAYER This layer implements the full suite of end-user applications including the enhanced Sierra application. It manages the presentation and user interaction in an ordered and meaningful manner and is aware of device dependencies. Providing multi-device support for client, web, tablet, and mobile devices, this layer exposes various RESTful API extensions where services are identified by their URLs What s more, a broad set of API sets supports functionality spanning OAI/PMH-compliant data delivery, patron management, My Account access, and more. This Sierra presentation layer also consumes APIs of various thirdparty sources including harvestable content, web-scale resources, social networking, and other web properties.. Sierra Services-Oriented Architecture Presentation Layer DATABASE LAYER Implemented using industry-standard open source technologies, this layer includes a PostgreSQL database and Lucene indexing technologies that provide the technical underpinnings of Sierra. Database access and index management tools allow control over these resources, while at the same time exposing them to third-party applications such as report writers and other SQL-compliant tools. Accelerated device adoption Business Logic Rapid application development Data Access Flexibility in SQL Database Layer Resource independence Based on open source tools including the PostgreSQL database and Lucene search engine, Sierra dramatically expands library options in the context of integrating library data and content into other systems, and provides the opportunity for integrating the library with social networking sites. Sierra also significantly enhances the ability of the library to customize its applications for its users and reach them where and how they want to be reached. Along with the trusted workflow offerings, Sierra comes with a state-of-the-art public catalog that offers powerful searching with Innovative s RightResult search algorithm. Sierra is also compliant with CSS technology, affording library control over information content and presentation. For libraries that seek next-generation discovery, Sierra works out of the box with Innovative s Encore Discovery and Encore Synergy offerings. Sierra s open services-based design also provides great flexibility in how to deploy it. Options include managed services, private cloud and local implementations. Unlike web-scale-only offerings, Sierra functions in a manner best suited for the library. Sierra offers simplified administration and security, providing additional efficiencies to the staff workflow. There is an integrated staff client with updated usability. For reporting, Sierra s comprehensive design utilizes a full range of Boolean combinations to facilitate searching of any data element in any type of record, and enables library staff to create sophisticated reports and statistics without IT assistance or programming expertise. Sierra s SOA-compliant design has four layers, each of which exposes applicable services and provides a distinct set of functionality. The services architected within each layer are loosely coupled, and operate in widely adopted wrappers (including DAO, SOAP, Java, and http). THE ABILITY TO CREATE Sierra gives librarians the ability to create the kind of patron experience and library management approach they ve always wanted. Sierra starts with a full-featured set of library-operations workflow functionality, supporting better decisions through seamless information access and fully functional workflow/business logic. Whether it includes circulation, cataloging, patron management, serials handling, or purchasing and accounting management, Sierra offers the trusted business logic and flexible workflow support for which Innovative is renowned. Our focus on integrated resource management design principles means that Sierra is agnostic about the types of materials (physical, electronic, program, service) the library manages. In addition to flexible and best-in-class information and workflow management, Sierra s foundation of universal, integrated resource management offers enhanced e-resource/e-book support. And because libraries must succeed in a larger technology environment, Sierra offers multiple ways to connect to other critical systems on which libraries rely. Single sign-on support (Shibboleth), LDAP compatibility, Courseware Integration for Blackboard and other courseware management systems, and application interfaces for fines payment make Sierra the system for libraries that count on interoperability for their operational needs. Another advantage of the expandable SOA design is the ability of Sierra to conform to any library configuration and system specifications, from those of the smallest branch library to those of a statewide consortia system. Beyond core ILS functionality, Sierra supports a variety of user-facing products and productivity tools, including: ENCORE SYNERGY Includes newly enhanced electronic article functionality, the latest in next-generation discovery. MOBILE PRODUCTS Bring the library anywhere with AirPAC for Smartphones or Encore Mobile. EXPRESS LANE Enables customers to check out library materials using a PC workstation and touch screen. ECOMMERCE Allows customers to pay fees and fines through the online catalog or during check out. Automatically clears the fine, emails a receipt to the patron, and records the appropriate data. PROGRAM REGISTRATION Allows customers to self-register online for library events, fully integrates with the catalog so that library users can easily access information about such events, and provides superior staff functionality to manage registration parameters and sessions. CIRCA Wireless, portable application to manage inventory and circulation. Runs on a handheld device requiring only a browser, and can be used with RFID or barcode technologies. THE TOOLS TO CONNECT The big win for Sierra libraries is the availability of a robust set of well-documented and multi-purpose application program interfaces (APIs). APIs expose Sierra functionality in a variety of new ways, and offer endless possibilities. Unlike open source programs, libraries benefit from well-tested business rule implementations without the burden of dealing with detailed software coding, freeing valuable programming staff to be more focused and productive. Proliferation of new devices (mobile, tablet, wireless) continues to accelerate. Not only are the devices students and staff use to interact with the library changing, but also the very nature of the content that the library provides is rapidly shifting from physical to digital, licensed content and local digital collections. Sierra s architecture enables the library to quickly and easily connect with these new devices, and display rich content as it comes to market and resources expand. Sierra s open services approach means libraries enjoy virtually unlimited means of connecting operations to a wide variety of open-source, library-developed and third-party software. Employing an API approach ensures consistent enforcement of business logic and significantly reduces interfacing effort, making valuable library resources available for high-impact projects and activities. In addition to providing a library with better ways to connect to its operations, Sierra also utilizes a broad range of third-party entities to substantially expand its content and functionality. Sierra s services-based offering includes connecting to third-party content providers such as Syndetic Solutions, EBSCO, OCLC s WorldCat, SkyRiver, and more. This flexible use of third-party content dramatically extends the library s reach, enabling it to offer the most current, comprehensive resources possible. With Sierra, going social and connecting to users is a big part of today s library. Sierra offers libraries the opportunity to connect to users by utilizing APIs and hooks provided by social media and other web-based properties. For example, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn all offer a suite of APIs that facilitate displaying activity (such as a tweet stream), linking sign-on information (using Facebook logins across library applications), and managing a library s presence within these sites. Sierra allows a library to connect with its data. With Sierra s open source PostgreSQL database implementation, libraries are initially able to implement any of the SQL-compliant reporting tools such as Crystal Reports. The table editor functionality facilitates the changing the views of the database and adding fields to address a library s changing needs.

The flexible, single-point application that busy librarians demand, the Sierra desktop offers operational efficiencies by streamlining the various staff functions typically used in the library. Java -based, we ve focused on putting vital functionality where it counts most: into the integrated client app. The app provides performance improvements in the staging and management of the software while offering a modern look and feel and a streamlined user interface. By its nature, Sierra encourages libraries to create new advancements on their own. It allows Innovative to engage user- and partner-developers in more ways than ever before with targeted trainings and community-based services that engage and empower the library developer. THE JOURNEY TO SIERRA The Sierra development initiative was publicly announced in April 2011. However, many of the technical underpinnings for Sierra were already well underway at that time. Currently, Innovative plans a suite of releases over the 2011-2012 timeframe, each release offering a combination of web services and enhanced staff/client functionality. The initial release, scheduled for late 2011, will be a major foundational release that includes exposure of the PostgreSQL database and Lucene index structures, as well as the new integrated staff client that replaces traditional module-based client architecture. Subsequent releases will include enhanced e-workflow functionality, continued API development, and the release of a thin web client. The Sierra roadmap includes specific deliverables intended to address exciting opportunities for engaging library-developers such as a Developer Sandbox and Developer Community. In addition, with the launch of Sierra, Innovative will be offering a new suite of training and support programs addressing all of the new functionality being offered. Along with system- and app-specific training programs, training programs in APIs and SQL are also under consideration. What s more, we hope to foster a developer community so that key learnings can be passed among libraries in new and forward-thinking ways.
