Fall 2016 Traditional BSN Application Packet ALL application requirements and materials MUST be completed and submitted to the School of Nursing by February 1, 2016 no exceptions. Students will receive an email from the School of Nursing confirming their application has been received. Please read entire application instructions for information on eligibility, requirements, and scholarship application. Incomplete applications will not be considered for admission. You must be admitted to Wichita State University (WSU) as a degree-bound student by December 1, 2015. You can apply to WSU on-line at www.wichita.edu/admissions. Admission to Wichita State University and the College of Health Professions does not imply admission to the School of Nursing. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you meet with a College of Health Professions Academic Advisor prior to January 1, 2016. An advisor can review your completed plan of study (page 9) and determine your eligibility. Appointments may not be available in the immediate weeks leading up to the application deadline. Advising meetings can be in-person or over the phone. Students with unevaluated college credit from outside of Kansas should immediately request transfer equivalency reviews by contacting the College of Health Professions Student Advising Services: 316-978-3304. Evaluations of transfer credit could take up to two months to process. If updated official transcripts have previously been sent to Undergraduate Admissions or the Registrar s Office, they do not need to be re-sent to the School of Nursing. Transcripts must include grades from any coursework taken Fall 2015. Official Wichita State University transcripts are not required. UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS for ALL college level coursework taken outside of WSU should be attached to your nursing application unless the coursework is already posted on your WSU transcript. These transcripts should include grades from any coursework taken Fall 2015 or earlier. You must meet MINIMUM ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS: At point of application, overall cumulative GPA of 2.75 on all college-level coursework. At point of application, WSU GPA must meet minimum graduation requirements (2.0) At point of program entry, you must have a minimum grade of C/2.0 in each prerequisite course. At point of program entry, you must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in the following science courses: Chemistry/Lab, Anatomy and Physiology/Lab, Microbiology/Lab, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology Prerequisite courses must be completed before Fall 2016 semester. Admission is contingent upon maintaining and meeting all requirements listed above. No exceptions. If nutrition has not been taken, it must be taken the first semester of the nursing program. Any remaining general education courses (only six hours or two courses may be remaining at point of entry to the program) are required to graduate. We recommend that you take these courses during a summer semester. Your TEAS V SCORE REPORT must be attached to your nursing application. All four sections must be taken in the same setting. The following minimum scores must be achieved on each section of the test: Math 63% Science 45% English 60% Reading 69% Students with an ACT composite score 27 or SAT-I composite score of 1125 are not required to take the TEAS Documentation of ACT or SAT score is required and should be attached to your application. SELECTION PROCESS The following areas are considered in our selection process: Cumulative GPA. Science course grades. Cultural Diversity experience. Health care related work experience. Previous degree (baccalaureate or higher). NOTIFICATION OF ADMISSION STATUS All candidates will be notified in writing of their admission status by early April. If admitted, you will be REQUIRED to: Pay a $100 deposit to hold your place in the program. The non-refundable deposit will be applied toward Fall 2016 tuition for the nursing program. Attend a required Nursing School Readiness meeting on April 15, 2016 and a required Nursing School Orientation held the week before Fall 2016 classes begin. Final admission is contingent upon meeting all GPA and prerequisite requirements at point of program entry. Students not selected for admission must reapply to be considered for another semester. BACKGROUND CHECK Once admitted, a criminal background check is required prior to enrollment in the nursing curriculum as a condition for participation in clinical classes. A Social Security Number is required to conduct a valid background check. LICENSURE Upon successful completion of the nursing program, graduates apply to the Kansas State Board of Nursing to take the national licensing examination (NCLEX) to be licensed as a registered nurse. Applicants for admission should be aware that current Kansas law provides that no license, certificate of qualification or authorization to practice nursing as a licensed professional nurse, as a licensed practical nurse, as an advanced registered nurse practitioner or registered nurse anesthetist shall be granted to a person with a felony conviction for a crime against persons as specified in article 34 of chapter 21 of the Kansas Statutes Annotated, as amended. Applicants should also be aware that the application form requires the applicant to provide a Social Security Number. 3 Test of Essential Academic Skills V (TEAS) ABOUT THE TEAS The Test of Academic Skills V is a required test for students submitting application to the undergraduate School of Nursing program at Wichita State University. The proctored TEAS measures basic essential skills in the academic content area domains of reading, mathematics, science and English and language usage. These entry level skills were deemed important for nursing program applicants by a panel of nursing program curriculum experts. HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE TEAS Official study manual: ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Study Manual (Publisher: ATI, Assessment Technologies Institute, LLC) A study manual and online practice exams are available at www.atitesting.com Official study manual available on reserve in WSU Ablah Library or for purchase in the WSU bookstore HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE TEAS www.registerblast.com/wsu The non-refundable testing fee is paid during the online registration process. This fee includes the cost of the ATI TEAS and reserves the date and computer time for your test at the WSU Counseling and Testing Center. You can register up to 2 days before the test, if space is available. If you have questions or you need special accommodations for testing, please call the WSU Counseling and Testing Center (316-978-3440) before registering. Test fee refunds are not given for improper registration or those ineligible to take the test. THE DAY OF THE TEST Photo Identification is required (driver's license, school photo ID, Employee photo ID, or passport) Calculators are NOT allowed. The test is 209 minutes. Scores are received immediately after the test. MINIMUM REQURED SCORES The following minimum scores are required: Reading - 69% Math - 63% Science - 45% English - 60% Once minimum scores are met, do not repeat the test. Scores are not used in the selection process. IMPORTANT INFORMATION The TEAS can be taken at any testing site where all four sections of the test are taken and passed in one sitting. This test may be taken as many times as needed to reach the minimum scores, but payment is required for each testing. If you fail on the first attempt, you should wait at least 1 month before re-taking the test to allow for study time. DEADLINE INFORMATION Testing must be completed prior to the School of Nursing application deadline. As there are large numbers of applicants and limited computer availability, it is STRONGLY recommended that you take this test as early as possible in the application process. If you attempt to register for the test later than two weeks prior to the application deadline, test registration cannot be guaranteed.
