Structure 1. Who is smoking? 2. Critical issues 3. Future of smoking: E-Cigarettes 3.1 Background 3.2 Functionality 3.3 Legal situation 3.4 Predicition of growth 4. Conclusion 2
1 Who is smoking? Germany: about 22 m. smokers (Population: 80,7 m. inhabitants) Proportion: 33 % of adults > 13,2 m. men > 8,5 m. women Adolescents (12 17 y/o): smokers due about 13% > Decreasing trend 226 m. cigarettes per day turn to ashes in Germany 3
2 Critical issues - Health Cancer (Lung Cancer, Stomach Cancer, Kidney Cancer) Cardiovascular disease (Heart Attack, Stroke, Hypertension) Bone disease (Osteoporosis, Hip Fracture) Alimentary disease (Gum disease, Tooth loss, Stomach) Lung disease (Asthma, Chronic bronchitis) Eye disease (Blindness) Reproductive system (Impotence, Infertility) 4
2 Critical issues - Social More smokers in the lower social strata Non-smoker don t want to smoke passive don t want contact to smoker Social exclusion because of non-smoking-areas (e.g. restaurant, bars) Starting smoking in the young harder to stop For young people smoking seems cool apealing to their smoking friends 5
2 Critical issues - Economics One package with 19 cigarettes 5,20 Tax portion: 3,79 Duty on tobacco: 2,96 Value added tax: 0,83 Percentage for economy: 1,41 Society has to pay 35 billion for smokers <-> smokers only pay 14 billion duty on tobacco 6
2 Critical issues - Government Warning notices on cigarette packets: - Smoking can kill - Smoking does considerable harm to you and the people in your surroundings - Smoking causes deadly lung cancer - Smoking makes your skin grow old No-smoking rules: - Schools - Stations - Workplace - Restaurants & Hotels (smoking only in a separated room) 7

3.3 Legal situation Age restrictions: Existing unlicensed products have no minimum age of sale and persons under the age of 18 can purchase them Licensed nicotine containing products will have an age limit likely to be 18 years of age Advertising of medicines to children under the age of 16 is against European law
Electronic cigarettes in Germany: Permitted Which means import sale and use are permitted The Supreme Courts in two States ruled that e-cigarettes and refill liquid are not pharmaceuticals to be regulated under the Medicines Act or the Medical Devices Act

You can buy them in Online shops Supermarkets Tobacco shops Pharmacies Some gas stations
3.4 Predictions of growth Experts expects stormy growth The number of people who use electronic cigarettes in the UK has tripled over the past two years to 2.1 million Just over half of current or ex-smokers have now tried e-cigarettes, compared with 8% in 2010 Current smokers using e-cigarettes regularly have risen from 2.7% in 2010 to 17.7% in 2014 A separate study found that most e-cigarette users were using them to reduce smoking 16
Predictions of growth 17
4 Conclusion Can e-cigarettes change the pattern of tobacco smoking? New-fashioned product / trend The future of e-cigarettes is hard to predict because there are no longterm studies yet In our opinion e-cigarettes are likely to change the smoking behaviour if they won t be banned by upcoming laws 18
