The Powerware Relay-Serial Card The Powerware Relay-Serial Card is an X-Slott connectivity device that allows your UPS to communicate simultaneously with an IBM i5/iseriest AS/400 system and another operating system, such as Microsoft Windows, IBM AIX, or Linux operating systems. The 9-pin port provides standard serial communication, and the 25-pin port provides isolated (relay) signals. Relay-Serial Card Installation To install the Relay-Serial Card: 1. Remove the X-Slot cover (or existing X-Slot card) on the UPS rear panel. Retain the screws (see Figure 2). NOTE Some UPSs may have another X-Slot card already installed (such as the Powerware 9125 UPS). If there is a communication cable attached to this card, disconnect the cable and then remove the X-Slot card. X-Slot Cover Figure 2. Removing the X-Slot Cover (Powerware 5125 Rear Panel Shown) 2. To prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD), place one hand on a metal surface such as the UPS rear panel. Align the Relay-Serial Card with the slot guides and slide the card into the slot until it is firmly seated. 3. Secure the Relay-Serial Card with the screws removed in Step 1. IBM i5/iseries Server Connection To connect the Relay-Serial Card to the IBM i5/iseries server: 1. Connect the Relay-Serial Card to the IBM i5/iseries server using the supplied communication cable (124902074-030): Connect the DB-25 end to the Relay-Serial Card. Connect the DB-9 end to the IBM i5/iseries server (port labeled J14, UPS, P1-T1, or P1-T2 depending on the server model). NOTE For IBM i5 servers, connect the DB-9 cable end to the IBM-supplied interface cable (1827), which then connects to the server port. 2. Set the QUPSDLYTIM system value for the UPS monitoring feature on the AS/400 operating system. UPS monitoring is a standard feature of the AS/400 operating system. QUPSDLYTIM is a timer in the AS/400 that tells the system how long to run on UPS power before shutting down. Each AS/400 system is initially assigned a default value for QUPSDLYTIM. A complete description of QUPSDLYTIM is provided on the AS/400 Information Center Internet Site at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/ic2924/info/index.htm. Select System Administration and Maintenance. CAUTION The *NOMAX value tells the AS/400 to use customized shutdown software, and if none is available it will begin shutdown immediately when utility power fails. DO NOT set QUPSDLYTIM to *NOMAX unless you understand the implications of the *NOMAX function as described at the AS/400 Information Center Internet Site. 6 EATON Powerware Relay-Serial Card User s Guide S 164201600 Rev A
Other Computer Connection To connect the Relay-Serial Card to the other computer requiring UPS serial communication: 1. Connect the Relay-Serial Card to the other computer system using the supplied communication cable (124102022-003). 2. Install Powerware LanSafet Power Management Software from the Software Suite CD (included in the UPS accessory kit). 3. In the Powerware LanSafe software, select Configuration - Management Settings to set the shutdown time. Specify the same amount of time as the QUPSDLYTIM setting to prevent the UPS from shutting down one system too early. NOTE It is strongly recommended to select the Never Power-Off UPS option using the Options button to prevent powering off the UPS while the IBM server is still on (see Figure 3). 4. Units damaged in shipment as a result of improper packaging are not covered under warranty. A replacement or repair unit will be shipped, freight prepaid for all warrantied units. NOTE For critical applications, immediate replacement may be available. Two-Year Limited Warranty (US and Canada Only) Eaton Power Quality Corporation warrants the electronics of the Relay-Serial Card to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of two years from Date of Purchase. If, in Eaton Power Quality Corporation s opinion, the electronics fails to meet its published specifications due to a defect in material and workmanship covered by this warranty, Eaton Power Quality Corporation will repair or replace the warranted Unit at no cost to the customer for parts and labor. Equipment supplied by Eaton Power Quality Corporation, but not manufactured by Eaton Power Quality Corporation, is warranted solely by the manufacturer of such equipment. Eaton Power Quality Corporation does not warrant equipment not manufactured by Eaton Power Quality Corporation. This warranty does not apply to any Unit that has been subject to neglect, accident, abuse, misuse, misapplication, incorrect connection or that has been subject to repair or alteration not authorized in writing by Eaton Power Quality Corporation s personnel. THIS WARRANTY IS THE PURCHASER S (USER S) SOLE REMEDY AND IS EXPRESSLY IN LIEU OF ANY OTHER WARRANTY, AND THERE ARE NO OTHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED GUARANTEES OR WARRANTIES (INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR PURPOSE). In no case will Eaton Power Quality Corporation s liability under this contract exceed the value of the Unit furnished. In no event shall Eaton Power Quality Corporation be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages. Eaton Power Quality Corporation shall not be responsible for failure to provide service or parts due to causes beyond Eaton Power Quality Corporation s reasonable control. THIS LIMITED WARRANTY IS VOID UNLESS USER RETURNS TO EATON POWER QUALITY CORPORATION THE INCLUDED WARRANTY REGISTRATION CARD WITHIN THIRTY (30) DAYS OF DELIVERY. Any advice furnished the Purchaser (User) before or after delivery in regard to use or application of Eaton Power Quality Corporation equipment is furnished without charges and on the basis that it represents Eaton Power Quality Corporation s best judgement under the circumstances. The use of any such advice by the Purchaser (User) is solely and entirely at his or her own risk. This limited warranty applies only to equipment installed in the fifty United States of America and Canada. In other countries, consult your local distributor. Extended Service Coverage A full complement of warranty extensions and enhancements are available from Eaton Power Quality Corporation for your UPS. Information pertaining to these services should be available in the shipping container along with this manual. International Limited Warranty Eaton Power Quality Corporation warrants the electronics modules manufactured by Eaton Power Quality Corporation ( Unit ) and batteries originally packaged in the Unit or in battery packs manufactured by Eaton Power Quality Corporation against defect in material or workmanship until the earlier of: (1) 18 months from date of shipment or (2) 12 months from date of initial start-up is performed by Eaton Power Quality Corporation field personnel or field personnel authorized by Eaton Power Quality Corporation to carry out such service efforts on its behalf and provided that, startup occurs no later that 6 months after shipment. If the unit does not function in accordance with its published specification, the user should give Eaton Power Quality Corporation prompt notice thereof and if requested by Eaton Power Quality Corporation, the user shall return the warranted Unit or parts thereof to the plant or service station designated by Eaton Power Quality Corporation for inspection by Eaton Power Quality Corporation. Any Unit which may require repair and/or replacement of parts as the result of defects in workmanship or material within the stated warranty period, will be replaced or repaired at Eaton Power Quality Corporation s option without charge for replacement parts. The cost of shipment, duties or all other expenses associated with shipment of repaired or replaced items is for the account of the user. Eaton Power Quality Corporation will not be responsible or liable for work done or expense incurred in connection with repair or replacement except as expressly authorized by Eaton Corporation, Raleigh, NC, USA in writing. If a service engineer is required, labor, at current published rates, and all travel and living expenses are for the account of the user. Eaton Power Quality Corporation does not warrant equipment not manufactured by Eaton Power Quality Corporation including any battery not originally packaged with the Unit or in battery packs manufactured by Eaton Power Quality Corporation. The manufacturer of all such equipment shall solely warrant that equipment and Eaton Power Quality Corporation shall have no responsibility or liability thereof. IT IS AGREED THAT Eaton Power Quality Corporation, ITS PARENT COMPANY, OR ANY OF THEIR AFFILIATES, SHALL HAVE NO LIABILITY FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, AND THAT THERE IS NO WARRANTY, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED BY LAW OR THE PARTIES HERETO, OTHER THAN THOSE EXPRESSLY SET FORTH HEREIN. THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER DAMAGE TO THE UNIT CAUSED BY MISUSE, ABUSE, NEGLECT, UNAUTHORIZED MODIFICATIONS, IMPROPER MAINTENANCE, ACCIDENTS OR OTHER ABNORMAL CONDITIONS. Force Majeure Eaton Power Quality Corporation shall not be liable for any delays or defaults hereunder by reason of fire, floods, acts of God, labor troubles, accidents to machinery, delays of carriers or suppliers, inability of suppliers to supply, the impositions of priorities, restrictions or other acts of government, or other causes beyond its reasonable control.
