AEXALEVI Second Convention 2012 In and Out: Fads & Trends in ELT 14 th & 15 th September Venue I.E.S. Lenguas Vivas J. R. Fernández. Pellegrini 1515. The world is immersed in a flow, and at times what appears to be an overflow, of changes, which may be visually depicted as shifts from black to white, shades along a continuum and even colours fading away. In the field of English Language Teaching, the flow is pervaded with antagonistic forces that bear a tension between hi-tech and unplugged teaching; with communicative and task-based giving in to content-based approaches; with English being dethroned by the Englishes in the multiplicity of cultures and literacies. AEXALEVI Second Convention seeks to generate debate and discussion concerning these issues so that we, the actors of it all, can reflect upon the flow as fads and trends emerge and submerge. The aim of this presentation is to explore the nature of fairy tales and its role in our 21st century culture. To what extent are these moralizing stories current in our postmodern society? Drawing examples from different media (from picturebooks to movies) and exploring instances of intertextuality and textual intervention by authors such as Jon Scieszka, Anthony Browne, Carol Anne Duffy, Neil Gaiman, and Emily Gravett, among many others, this workshop will provide participants with ideas on how to intervene these traditional stories in an attempt to foster language development and genre literacy in our ELT classes. 3:15-3:30 p.m. 3:30-4:45 Semi Aldana Aguirre is a graduate teacher from I.E.S. en Lenguas Vivas Juan Ramón Fernández. She teaches in primary and secondary schools in the province of Buenos Aires. She also teaches Didáctica II and she is an assistant teacher in Metodología y Práctica de la Enseñanza at I.E.S. en Lenguas Vivas Juan Ramón Fernández. As teachers we sometimes feel the need to free ourselves from a dependency on the wide variety of materials available. Relevance, motivation and learner-centredness are core principles in what started as a critique of the over-reliance on materials in 2000 to what is now presented as the Dogme approach. Teaching Unplugged is a three-point framework about teaching that is conversation-driven, materials-light with a focus on language that emerges from the learners interaction. It allows teachers to open up the space in the classroom to the learners. Teaching should be done using only the resources that teachers and students bring to the classroom and whatever happens to be in the classroom.
