INSTRUCTIONS APPLICATION OVERVIEW AND RECOMMENDATION GUIDELINES n The admission committee will review complete applications promptly and notify you of the decision by mail. Decisions will be disclosed only by mail. n Incomplete applications or those lacking any transcript or the application fee will not be considered until they are complete. n Incomplete applications will be discarded after one year. n Materials must be postmarked by the application deadline for the program to which you are applying. n The School of Education does not provide recommendation forms. Recommendations should be frank and detailed, providing specific information concerning your intellectual and personal characteristics and performance. APPLICANT FOR TEACHING & LEARNING CERTIFICATION ONLY If you possess a master s degree or are currently enrolled in one of DePaul University s master s programs, you may apply to take classes leading to certification only. To be considered as a certification-only student, submit a completed application form and official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended along with a brief personal statement outlining goals for applying. A $40 application fee is required unless you currently are enrolled in a DePaul University master s program. APPLICANT FOR SUBSEQUENT CERTIFICATE If you hold a valid teaching certificate in the state of Illinois, you may enroll in a program designed to help you obtain a subsequent certificate in the following areas: early childhood education; elementary education; secondary education; world languages education; and special education. In order to be considered for admission, you must submit a completed application as specified by the admission requirements for the teaching and learning program or the special education for certified teachers program. In addition to the standard application materials, you also must submit a valid Illinois teaching certificate and a letter from your school principal providing evidence of prior teaching experience and teaching performance. (If you are currently not employed as a teacher, then other evidence of prior teaching experience must be provided.) In addition, evidence of having passed the Illinois Basic Skills Test must be submitted by the end of the first quarter of completed course work. APPLICANT FOR FIVE-YEAR B.A./B.S. TO M.ED. The five-year B.A./B.S. to M.Ed. program is geared toward current DePaul undergraduate students who have reached junior status (88 or more quarter hours) who have a declared Liberal Arts and Science major that will lead to certification (biology, chemistry, English, environmental science, history, mathematics, physics or social sciences). Students must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher. If students have transferred to DePaul they must have at least 16 quarter hours completed at DePaul. Students must complete the Graduate School of Education Application for the teaching and learning secondary education program, meeting all of the requirements outlined at the time of application. In addition to their application, students are required to submit the five-year B.A./B.S. to M.Ed. supplemental form, available at education.depaul.edu. NON-DEGREE AND STUDENT-AT-LARGE APPLICANTS The School of Education may admit non-degree seeking students who wish to take a course(s) to complete prerequisites for admission, personal enrichment or professional development, or students-at-large who wish to take specific course(s) at DePaul to transfer course credit to an institution that they are currently enrolled. Both non-degree and at-large students will need to submit an application and a $40 application fee. Additionally, non-degree students must submit official transcripts showing highest degree earned. Students-at-large also must submit a letter of good standing from their current institution identifying the specific course work to be taken at DePaul University. (Course work completed in a non-degree status may or may not be applicable to a degree program and is subject to approval by the advisor and appropriate department chair.) READMISSION If you were previously admitted to DePaul but have been absent for more than one year, you must submit the application form and transcripts of any courses taken elsewhere during your absence. To use materials from a previous application, you must indicate, in written form, which materials you would like to apply to your new application. If the original application has been destroyed (after an absence of two years), you will be required to resubmit the entire application and all supplemental materials. A $10 application fee is required. A copy of DePaul University s Annual Report is available upon request. The report includes statistics about crimes that occurred on campus and public property immediately adjacent to campus.
