USA ycling ontinuing Education Unit (EU) Policy IMPORTANT NOTE If you are a renewing coach for 2008, you need to read the 3.0.7 policy regarding EUs. Please do not read further into this document as you will likely become confused. If your coaching license lapsed for a year, please contact the USA oaching Education Manager regarding renewals. The document for determining how many EUs and if you need a criminal background check is available at the USA website. The document will be updated in 2008 as needed. All coaches will be required to submit a EU summary when the criminal background check is due. Also, if you renewed for 2008 and turned in EUs or completed the recertification exam, you are also on this new two year cycle so that the next EU report form is due when you renew for 2010. What if I do not attain the required EUs? If a coach does not meet the EU requirement for the reporting period, his/her certification will not be renewed. A coach not meeting the EU requirement may renew his/her coaching license if the coach completes and passes a USA ycling re-certification exam. The exams are available from the MYUSAYLING function on the USA website under the Special Tools heading. If you need to send in the recertification exam, please do so when you send in the renewal for 2009. Effective December 1, 2007 For coaches who earn their first coaching licenses after October 31, 2007, this policy is in effect for them. For all other coaches it goes into effect with renewal for 2009. oaches who do not meet the EU requirement will be able to pay a re-certification fee and take the appropriate test in case the coach has not met the EU requirements. Level 3 coaches may take the level 3 recertification exam and pay the $20 recertification fee when sending in the answer sheet. There is not need to order the level 3 materials again. The test will be available through the MYUSAYLING function under Special Tools. Level 2 coaches may take the current level 2 exam and pay a re-certification fee of $350. The payment will be due when the exam answer sheet is turned in. (Please note the change in fee from previous policies). Level 1 coaches may take the current level 1 exam and pay the re-certification fee of $399. The payment will be due when the exam is turned into USA ycling. (Please note the change in fee from previous policies). 1
ontinuing Education Policy Purpose: The purpose of the continuing education policy is to encourage USA ycling licensed coaches to stay abreast of evolving knowledge and skills related to being a cycling coach. ontinuing education promotes the competency of the coach. Program Overview In order to maintain your coaching certification through USA ycling, each coach is required to complete a specific number of ontinuing Education Units (EUs). Beginning with coaching licenses valid for 2008, all coaches will have to complete the following steps in order to renew his/her coaching license for 2010: omplete four (4.0) EUs omplete the online criminal background procedure (explained elsewhere) Submit a completed EU Reporting Form along with the coaching license application and fee alculating EUs In general, EUs are based on actual clock hours or contact hours undertaken to complete the activity or event. One contact hour equals 0.1 EU; thus, attending a 10 hour lecture will generally yield 1.0 EU. However, USA ycling will assign a value for a seminar/clinic/conference based on its relevance to coaching cyclists. USA ycling seminars and clinics will each have a EU value given to them. In general, 1.0 EUs will be offered for each day. ollege courses are treated differently and are explained below. ourses taken in the same calendar year as you become a coach count toward that year. For instance, if you attend a conference that would earn EUs in January but do not become a certified coach until March, the course in January will count toward that year s EU. However, if you become a coach in January you cannot count a course taken in the previous calendar year as EUs. EU ategories There is no longer a limit on the number of EUs that can be earned in a category. The categories are for organizational purposes only. ategory A Attendance at seminars and conferences directly related to cycling or coaching. In order for such a meeting to qualify, the content must be directly applicable to cycling or coaching. USA ycling Science and Education Manager can pre-approve such seminars. USA ycling clinics/seminars/conferences USA ycling mentoring program. 2
USA ycling seminars/webinars. Each seminar/webinar will be given a EU value that will be included in information about the seminar and/or in the receipt for the seminar. A coach who holds a certification may attend a certification clinic for EUs at the current level in order to earn EUs. For instance, a Level 2 coach may attend a Level 2 certification clinic. A Level 1 coach may attend a Level 1 certification clinic, but not a Level 2 clinic to earn EUs. ategory B Effective January 1, 2008 presentations made by a coach will no longer count as continuing education units for the presenter. Publications: Published works on cycling or coaching in which the coach is an author/co-author. A copy of the article in the publication must be submitted (or a reference/citation). (NOTE: Different publications will have different EU values. For instance, a journal article in a peer-reviewed journal (such as Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise) will carry more EUs than in a lay publication (such as VeloNews.). Weight will also be given for lead authorship in peer reviewed journals. Team Director for UI event. Serving as a camp instructor or camp manager at a USA ycling development camp or national team camp. ategory ollege course work taken related to cycling or coaching. What to Turn in? When it comes time to turn in the EU information, all that needs to be completed and sent in is the EU Report Form. You should not turn in the EU report form 1) when you reach 4.0 EUs 2) or piece meal such as every time you complete a continuing education activity.
