GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT KIRIKKALE UNIVERSITY Standing on the banks of the river Kızılırmak, Kırıkkale University is situated at a place that is far from the hustle and bustle of the city and yet, it is a place where one can quickly and easily reach the cultural and social facilities of the urban life. Founded in 1992, Kırıkkale University contributes a lot to our country with its highly-skilled academic staff and modern technical equipment. It ranks among the best universities in our country in terms of the number of students per lecturer. Its closeness to Ankara makes it an attractive place for many students as they can easily reach the scientific, cultural and social facilities of the capital city. As of today, education in Kırıkkale University is carried on in 10 Faculties, 1 School of Physical Education and Sports, 5 Vocational Schools and 3 Graduate Schools. Administration Kırıkkale University is a state university which is supported mainly by state funds. The formal Head of the University is the Rector who implements the resolutions of the governing bodies of higher education and the university board and also ensures coordination among organizations attached to the university. The University Senate is the chief academic body at the university level and responsible for coordinating the academic activities of the university. Admission Students are admitted to the faculties and schools of the university in accordance with the University Entrance Examination results determined by the Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) in Ankara or the results of the aptitude test held by the university itself for some schools. Admission to graduate studies (master and doctoral studies) is in accordance with the academic rules and regulations concerning graduate studies as set by the University of Kırıkkale Graduate Schools Rules and Regulations. LIFE AT OUR UNIVERSITY Accommodation Kırıkkale University has adequate accommodation facilities. The dormitory for girls on the main campus can seat 1096 students while the one for boys can accommodate 852 students. The dormitory for boys on Keskin Campus can seat 160 students while the one for girls is big enough to accommodate for 200 students. Meals There are refectories, canteens, a central cafeteria big enough to serve 3000 students and a central kitchen on the main campus. There is also a restaurant where academic and administrative staff can have breakfast and lunch. The needs of food and drink of the students who study in Keskin Vocational School are met by the refectory and the cafeteria on Keskin Campus. In addition, the fullyequipped kitchen in the hospital conducting under the Faculty of Medicine meets the catering needs of the staff, the students and the patients. Medical Facilities The Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports Affairs located on campus conducts medico-social services. This department offers health service to all university employees and students. Students having no national health insurance are transferred to Süleyman Demirel Research and Application Hospital or any other hospitals and their expenses are paid by the university. The Faculty of Dentistry, established in 2002, provides dental care for the students, the employees and local people. Financial Support for Students Students, academically successful and /or in need of financial aid, may be supported by various sources within and outside the university. The University Funds and several national and local NGOs provide scholarships for university students. 3
The Turkish Government has cultural exchange agreements with various countries. Foreign applicants should contact Turkish Embassies in their own countries about the possibility of receiving a scholarship from the Turkish Government. INTERNATIONALISATION We have bilateral agreements with various universities in Europe within the scope of Erasmus programme. The EU office supports projects and programmes in order to provide the participation and contribution of our academic staff to different research areas. SOCIAL FACILITIES Student Clubs Students can engage in countless indoor and outdoor activities organized by 40 student clubs dealing with sports, arts, environment, literature, etc. such as Mountaineering and Skiing Sports Club, Environment Club, Theatre Club and Turkish Folk Dances Club. Students are encouraged to form new clubs or participate in the existing ones. Sports Facilities There is one football pitch in standard size, apart from 2 carpet football pitches, a beach football pitch, 7 volleyball and 6 basketball fields, an athletic field, a tennis court and an indoor gym. We have also a heated swimming pool and a shock pool along with the necessary equipment for weight lifting workouts and wrestling. In addition, the sports facilities within the Campus of Keskin are as follows; a football pitch, a carpet football pitch, basketball and volleyball fields, a small sports complex with workout rooms and bathrooms. Foreign Language Center In Foreign Languages Education, Research and Application Center (KUYADIM), language courses are given to those who wish to learn new foreign languages and to improve their current levels of foreign language and also prepare students for proficiency exams such as TOEFL. How to Get to the University The Main Campus is situated on the Kırıkkale - Ankara main road, 7 km away from the city center. Shuttles between the University and the city centre are operated on a certain timetable. It takes only an hour to travel to the University main campus from Ankara by coach. Bank-Post Office ATMs are available on the main campus. There is also a post office within the campus area, where students can perform most banking transactions. Turkish banks present highly developed banking service fully integrated with the world. International credit cards such as VISA, MasterCard and American Express are valid in almost all locations where you will purchase services or products such as hotels, shops or travel agencies. 5
Library and Documentation Service Our University libraries offer services in three different locations increasing the number and the variety of books and periodicals from day to day. The Central Library moved to its new building in 2004 and the computing system has been rearranged. Beside the Central Library, there is a modern library within the structure of the Faculty of Medicine. Keskin Vocational School has also a modern library with internet connection. Our libraries possess over 63.000 books in total, 50.000 of which are in Turkish and 13.000 of which are in foreign languages. Our Central Library currently subscribes to approximately 87 periodicals published in Turkish. Our University also subscribes to over 50 data-bases containing electronic journals and books which all academic staff and students can access via Onelog Remote Access Program. Student Council Student Council consists of elected representatives of students from each academic unit. The president of the council can attend the Senate meetings to represent students on academic and administrative matters. 6

FACULTY OF EDUCATION General Info Founded in 1995, Faculty of Education admitted its first students to the Primary School Teacher Training Programme of the Department of Elementary Education in the academic year of 1997-1998. It was 2001 when the Physical Education and Sport Teacher Training Department started admitting students. Then in 2003 Science Teacher Training Programme under the Elementary Education Department was ready to start academic activities admitting the first students. In the academic year of 2005-2006 the Turkish Language Department was started with 30 students. In 2007 the Department of Computer and Teaching Technologies Education admitted its first 40 students. Total number of students in the academic year of 2008-2009 reached 1190. The Faculty has 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 17 assistant professors, 8 instructors and 11 research assistants. FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND LETTERS General Info Our faculty opened its doors to students for the first time in 1992 to educate scientists in various fields. The faculty of Science and Letters is one of the largest of the university s 10 faculties and schools and also one of the most prestigious teaching and research unit in the Kırıkkale University system. It is unique in Turkey with its MÖSSBAUER laboratory as well as a general chemistry laboratory, a general physics and nuclear physics laboratory, and a single crystal diffractometer laboratory. FACULTY OF LAW General Info Admitting students in the academic year of 1996-1997 for the first time, the faculty of Law brings up graduates who are ready to work in all law-related fields as lawyers, judges, prosecutors, inspectors, and law specialists. They are qualified in public and private law. Many of our graduates have become judges or prosecutors. Others successfully completed their lawyer internships and stepped into the legal profession. FACULTY OF MEDICINE General Info Founded in 1995, Faculty of Medicine started to admit patients in 1998. Medical education began in the academic year of 1998-1999. Preclinical phase of the education is given in the building of Basic Sciences located near the hospital. The Department of Anatomy, Histology, Medical Biology, Physiology, Forensic Medicine and Microbiology, the research laboratories of the Pharmacology, Physiology, Microbiology, Medical Biology, Deontology and Biochemistry are located in the building of Basic Sciences whereas the other departments are in the hospital buildings. Laboratories are equipped with the most recent technologic devices and advanced tools. Besides the research laboratories, there are also two multi-disciplinary laboratories for the students and lecturers. The University Hospital located in the city is where teaching of the clinical classes is carried out and internship is fulfilled. Research and training hospital of the University serving with fully academic physicians and advanced laboratories has 150 beds. There are 35 departments in the faculty of medicine. In the first three years, there are committee examinations. Passing grade is calculated with 60% of the mid-term examinations and 40% of the final examination. The average has to be at least 60. In the 4th, 5th and 6th years, there are clinical training periods to be fulfilled before continuing the next class. FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE General Info Established in 1992, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine began academic activities in February 1998. Following 5 years (10 semesters) of veterinary education and training, students are awarded the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Currently, in 14 departments, with young, dynamic and internationally recognized academic staff, the faculty serves in the local community with its clinics, laboratories and technical facilities. The primary objective of the Faculty of the Veterinary Medicine is to train professional vets to meet the demands of veterinary profession. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine signed bilateral agreements with two faculties in Poland and one faculty in Latvia under Socrates Erasmus Programme and started exchanging students and teachers. FACULTY OF DENTISTRY General Info Founded in 2002, Faculty of Dentistry began clinical services in 2004. It offers academic programmes including a graduate and a postgraduate one leading to a PhD degree. Our Faculty is one of the prominent dental research centers in the region. In addition to our own programmes, we participate in a number of interfaculty and multidisciplinary activities in the University. The mission of the Faculty of Dentistry is to educate clinicians and scientists in graduate and postgraduate level as well as to carry out continuing dental education and other academic activities related to research and clinical care. SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT General Info School of Physical Education and Sport was established in 1998. In fall 1999, the school started its education with the Department of Coaching Education. Department of Sport Management and Department of Recreation were included in 2001 and in 2002 respectively as four-year degree programmes. In order to be used for the educational activities, the school has 3 soccer fields including two artificial ones. 1, 1 tracking field, fields of beach handball, volleyball, and football, 1 fitness centre, outdoor fields of basketball, volleyball, and handball, tennis courts and 1 gymnasium. The mission of School of Physical Education and sport is to equip students with the skills and knowledge to conduct research and to interpret the results to be of value to further development in the field. Our aim is to provide a total education through the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of people in order to bring up healthier, happier, and more successful individuals. Our school educates trainers, sport specialists and researchers. All students in our school are encouraged to attend all cultural activities. KIRIKKALE VOCATIONAL SCHOOL General Info Founded in the academic year of 1976-1977, Kırıkkale Vocational School has participated in the joint Project run by the Higher Education Council and the World Bank to bring up more qualified technicians and vocational staff needed for our country. In the technical programmes, students utilize various laboratories to improve their skills and knowledge. The school has two language laboratories. There are two technical drawing rooms equipped with contemporary devices, a CNC lab, five computer labs, a communication lab, a material testing lab, a medical lab, a mushroom growing lab, and a petro-chemistry lab. Besides, there are two machine shops in which both theatrical and practical courses, related to machinery and concrete, can be carried out. There are two internet rooms. There are also, fitness centers, and an Olympic football field as well as basketball and handball pitches, a post office, and a cafeteria. KESKİN VOCATIONAL SCHOOL General Info Keskin Vocational School first started in 1994-95 in a building in Keskin with three programmes. Then the building became inadequate since the number of programmes and students increased so school moved to our current building. At the moment there are six departments. The school can seat 900 students. There are 10 classrooms, 2 electric labs, a computer lab, a ready clothing workshop, and a library with internet connection. There is also a cafeteria and a sport complex where students can play table tennis, football and basketball. A fitness centre is also available. The Keskin Vocational School campus is situated about 3 kilometers south of Keskin in an area of 300 acres. There are two dams in the area and the area itself is nice and interesting. HACILAR HÜSEYİN AYTEMİZ VOCATIONAL SCHOOL General Info Hacılar Hüseyin Aytemiz Vocational School was founded in 2006. The Vocational School prepares students to serve as a link between the decision maker/executive and the people implementing those decisions and develops the skills of the students to meet the needs of a changing career life. There is one main department: the Department of Technical Pogrammes (3 programs). The duration of the programmes is 4 semesters in 2 years. The students have to attend at least 70 % of the total classes. Currently, a total of 300 students are enrolled in the school. APPLICATION PROCEDURES FOR INCOMING STUDENTS Application To apply to Kırıkkale University as an Erasmus student, your Faculty/Department must be party to a bilateral agreement with the Faculty/Department you would like to study at Kırıkkale University. A complete application by Erasmus students requires the submission of the Incoming Application Form together with Grade Transcript, Learning Agreement and 10 Photographs. Obtaining Residence Permit It is imperative that all incoming students obtain a residence permit within the first week of their arrival. Cost of Living Life in Turkey is far cheaper than in most European countries, so living expenses for international students can be much lower than they calculate. An average Turkish student will need about 200-300 Euros per month, which could be a helpful clue for a foreign student planning to study at Kırıkkale University. 38
