VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin 1. Intrductin Clud cmputing is an apprach t cmputing that leverages the efficient pling f n-demand, selfmanaged virtual infrastructure that is cnsumed as a service. The clud cmputing apprach made pssible by sphisticated autmatin, prvisining, management, and virtualizatin technlgies differs dramatically frm the current IT mdel because it decuples data and sftware frm the physical infrastructure that runs them. Clud cmputing helps transfrms IT frm a cst center int a service prvider. VMware vclud is the VMware slutin fr clud cmputing. This dcument prvides the service definitin fr an enterprise that prvides private Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) resurces and uses public vclud resurces t extend its wn private capacity. This dcument has tw primary gals: Prvide an apprach fr creating a service definitin. Prvide a sample service definitin fr an enterprise vclud that can be used as a starting pint t create a custmized service definitin that meets specific business bjectives. 1.1 Audience This service definitin dcument is intended fr thse invlved in planning, defining, and designing the apprpriate vclud services that an enterprise IT rganizatin can prvide t cnsumers f these enterprise vclud services. The intended audience includes the fllwing rles: Enterprise IT as a prvider f private vclud services and a cnsumer f public vclud services. Architects and planners respnsible fr driving architecture-level decisins. Technical decisin makers wh have business requirements that need IT supprt. Cnsultants, partners, and IT persnnel wh need t knw hw t create a service definitin fr their enterprise vclud. 1.2 Scpe Fr clud cmputing, cmmnly accepted definitins are defined fr the deplyment mdels and there are several generally accepted service mdels. 1.2.1 Deplyment Mdel Scpe Figure 1 illustrates deplyment mdels fr clud cmputing. Fr enterprises, the fcus is n private and hybrid cluds. Figure 1. Deplyment Mdels Page 5 f 18

VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin The fllwing are the cmmnly accepted definitins fr the deplyment mdels fr clud cmputing. Private Clud The clud infrastructure is perated slely fr an rganizatin and may be managed by the rganizatin r a third party. The clud infrastructure may be n-premise r ff-premise. Public Clud The clud infrastructure is made available t the general public r t a large industry grup and is wned by an rganizatin that sells clud services. Hybrid Clud The clud infrastructure is a cmpsitin f tw r mre cluds (private and public) that remain unique entities, but are bund tgether by standardized technlgy. This enables data and applicatin prtability; fr example, clud bursting fr lad balancing between cluds. With a hybrid clud, an rganizatin gets the best f bth wrlds, gaining the ability t burst int the public clud when needed while maintaining critical assets n-premise. Cmmunity Clud The clud infrastructure is shared by several rganizatins and supprts a specific cmmunity that has shared cncerns (fr example, missin, security requirements, plicy, and cmpliance cnsideratins). It may be managed by the rganizatins r a third party, and may exist n-premise r ff-premise. The deplyment mdel fr the service definitin in this dcument is fr an enterprise IT rganizatin as a prvider f services t the cnsumers f enterprise vclud services an enterprise private vclud. The service definitin als cvers enterprise IT as a user r cnsumer f public vclud services in rder t extend its wn private capacity an enterprise hybrid vclud. 1.2.2 Service Mdel Scpe Figure 2 shws the generally accepted service mdels fr clud cmputing. Figure 2. Service Mdels Sftware as a Service (SaaS) Business-fcused sftware applicatin services are presented directly t the cnsumer frm a service catalg. Platfrm as a Service (PaaS) Technlgy-fcused services are presented fr applicatin develpment and deplyment t the applicatin develpers frm a service catalg. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Infrastructure cntainers are presented t cnsumers in rder t prvide mre agility, autmatin, and delivery f cmpnents. The service mdel fr the service definitin in this dcument is fr IaaS fr an enterprise IT rganizatin t prvide Infrastructure as a Service via a catalg f predefined infrastructure cntainers t cnsumers f these vclud services. The IaaS service layer serves as a fundatin fr prviding additinal service fferings, such as PaaS, SaaS, Desktp as a Service, and s n. Page 6 f 18

VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin 2. Service Definitin T define an enterprise vclud service, clear, cmplete, and cncise terms f the service need t be defined. The fllwing prvides an apprach fr creating a service definitin, and a sample f an enterprise vclud service definitin that can be used t create a custmized service definitin that meets specific business bjectives. 2.1 Service Definitin Apprach The apprach fr defining and designing the services ffered by the enterprise vclud shuld include: Invlvement f all necessary stakehlders. Dcumenting the business drivers and requirements that can be translated int apprpriate service definitins. Cnsidering a hlistic view f the entire service envirnment and service lifecycle including service setup, service request, service prvisining, service cnsumptin, service management and peratins, and service transitin and terminatin. Defining the service scenaris and use cases. Representatin f the service in rder t understand the cmpnents f the service, interactins, and sequence f interrelated actins. Defining the users and rles invlved with r interacting with the services s that user-centric services are created. Defining the service cntract (Service Level Agreement r SLA) fr the services and service cmpnents in the areas f infrastructure services, applicatin/vapp services, platfrm services, sftware services, and business services. Service quality shuld be defined fr the areas f perfrmance, availability, cntinuity, scalability, manageability, security, cmpliance, and cst/pricing. Defining the business service catalg and supprting IT service catalg. 2.2 Service Cncepts and Terminlgy The fllwing are the service cncepts and terms used: Service A means f delivering value t cnsumers by facilitating utcmes that cnsumers want t achieve withut the wnership f specific csts r risks. vclud Service Prvider (r Prvider) An entity that prvides vclud services t cnsumers. Cnsumer r Custmer Smene wh cnsumes vclud services and defines r agrees t Service Level Targets. Service Level Target A cmmitment that is dcumented in a Service Level Agreement. Service Level Targets are based n Service Level Requirements, and are needed t make sure that the vclud service design is fit fr its purpse. Service Level Targets shuld be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actinable, Realistic, Time-bund), and are usually based n Key Perfrmance Indicatrs (KPIs). Page 7 f 18

VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin Service Level Agreement (SLA) An agreement between a service cnsumer and the service prvider that measures the quality and perfrmance f the available services. Service Level Requirement A dcument recrding the business requirements f a vclud service. Service Level Objective A negtiated dcument that defines the service that will be delivered t the cnsumer in qualitative terms, althugh a small number f KPIs may als be included. It prvides a clearer understanding f the true nature f the service being ffered, fcusing n the cntributin f the service t the business value chain. 2.3 Service Lifecycle Althugh it might nt be pssible t cnsider every aspect f a service, it is imprtant t keep the entire service envirnment and service lifecycle in mind when creating the service definitin. This includes service setup, service request, service prvisining, service cnsumptin, service management and peratins, and service transitin and terminatin. A cnscius awareness f what cnsumers f the service and the prvider f the service will experience at each stage f the service lifecycle must be taken int accunt. This helps create the necessary service definitin elements fr the cnsumer-facing (SLA) and internal-facing (peratinal-level agreement r OLA) criteria. 2.4 Service Quality Define the fllwing service quality areas fr the services, as apprpriate: Perfrmance (applicatin respnse time, bandwidth including burst, time t respnd, time t reslutin). Availability (uptime, backup, restre, data retentin). Cntinuity (RPO, RTO). Scalability (staged burst t public vclud). Manageability (user accunt management, metering/billing/reprting, supprtability). Security (applicatin/data access, management/cntrl access, user accunts, authenticatin/authrizatin). Cmpliance (regulatry cmpliance, lgging, auditing, data retentin, reprting). Cst/pricing. Page 8 f 18

VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin 2.5 Service Characteristics The fllwing are the essential clud service characteristics as defined by NIST. Figure 3. Service Characteristics On-demand self service A cnsumer can unilaterally prvisin cmputing capabilities as needed, autmatically, withut requiring human interactin with each service s prvider. Brad netwrk access Capabilities are available ver the netwrk and accessed thrugh standard mechanisms that prmte use by hetergeneus thin r thick client platfrms. Resurce pling The prvider s cmputing resurces are pled t serve multiple cnsumers using a multi-tenant mdel, with different physical and virtual resurces dynamically assigned and reassigned accrding t cnsumer demand. There is a sense f lcatin independence in that the subscriber generally has n cntrl r knwledge ver the exact lcatin f the prvided resurces, but may be able t specify lcatin at a higher level f abstractin. Rapid elasticity Capabilities can be rapidly and elastically prvisined, in sme cases autmatically, t scale ut quickly and be rapidly released t quickly scale in. T the cnsumer, the capabilities available fr prvisining ften appear t be unlimited and can be purchased in any quantity at any time. Measured service Clud systems autmatically cntrl and ptimize resurce use by leveraging a metering capability at sme level f abstractin apprpriate t the type f service. Resurce usage can be mnitred, cntrlled, and reprted, prviding transparency fr bth the prvider and cnsumer f the utilized service. 2.6 Service Objectives The fllwing are examples f service bjectives fr an enterprise vclud service: Deliver a fully peratinal private vclud infrastructure. Maintain IT cntrl f access t the system and resurces. Prvide differentiated tiers f scale t align with business needs. Allw fr metering f the service fr internal cst distributin. Establish a catalg f cmmn infrastructure and applicatin building blcks. Prvide the fllwing service fferings: Basic (pay fr resurces used), Cmmitted (allcated resurces), and Dedicated (reserved resurces). Supprt a minimum f 1500 virtual machines acrss the three service fferings and have a plan t grw t a minimum f 5000 virtual machines. Page 9 f 18

VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin Prvide wrklad mbility between vclud instances allwing the cnsumer t easily enter the vclud and exit the vclud with existing wrklads. Prvide a direct cnnectin t the external netwrk fr applicatins that have upstream dependencies. Prvide an islated netwrk fr applicatins that need t be islated. Prvide pen, interperable, and Internet standard prtcls t cnsume vclud resurces. Prvide fr wrklad redundancy and data prtectin ptins. 2.7 Business Benefits The resulting enterprise vclud services prvide the fllwing benefits: Secure multi-tenancy fr lines f business (LOB). Leveraging existing investments in bth private and public cluds. Efficient prvisining, sharing, and management f virtualized resurces. Self-service user prtal with apprval wrkflws. Standard catalg f business and IT services that can be created, managed, and maintained. Standard catalg f predefined virtual machines and applicatins with usage metering. Linking with ther vclud services within r beynd the bundaries f the enterprise. 2.8 Stakehlders Include all stakehlders wh are affected by r have influence ver the enterprise vclud service, including thse invlved in creating, prviding, and cnsuming the service. This is c-creatin, and facilitating c-creatin in grups that are representative f the stakehlders is a vital aspect f vclud service definitin and design. C-creatin als facilitates a smth interactin between the stakehlders during the actual vclud service prvisining. Thrugh c-creatin, custmers get the chance t add value t the vclud service in partnership with the enterprise vclud service prvider early in the develpment f the vclud service. Examples f stakehlder categries include: Crprate functins: CxO/Executive management Enterprise security Enterprise architecture QA/Standards grups Prgram management ffice End-User rganizatin/lob/bu: Executives Line management Business dmain experts Data wners Page 10 f 18

VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin 2.10 Use Cases Enterprise vclud use cases generally fall int the fllwing categries f wrklads: Transient A transient applicatin is ne that is used infrequently, exists fr a shrt time perid, r is used fr a specific task r need. It is then discarded. This type f wrklad is apprpriate fr a pay fr use cnsumptin mdel. Highly Elastic An elastic applicatin is ne that is dynamically grwing and shrinking its resurce cnsumptin as it runs. An example f this wuld be a retail applicatin that sees dramatically increased demand during hliday shpping seasns, r a travel bking applicatin that expands rapidly as the fall travel seasn appraches. This bursty type f wrklad is apprpriate fr the allcatin cnsumptin mdel. Steady State A steady state applicatin is ne that tends t run all the time at a predictably steady state. This type f wrklad is apprpriate fr a reservatin cnsumptin mdel. Table 2 lists cmmn use cases that fall int the general vclud wrklad cases. Table 2. Wrklad Examples Examples Sftware testing Web applicatins File and print services Sales and demnstratin Training Lw gvernance wrklads Sftware develpment Messaging and cllabratin applicatins Dcument management applicatins Custm applicatins Infrastructure applicatins High gvernance wrklads With a knwledge f the wrklad types and cmmn uses cases yu can begin t define the service tiers that will be ffered inside f yur enterprise. The fllwing are sme example use cases: Deply an enterprise private vclud that deplys self-service and increases the speed with which cnsumer rganizatins can bring applicatins and services t market. Custmer with a Web presence needs t extend their fnt-end server farm due t anticipated spikes in incming traffic. See the Private VMware vclud Implementatin Example and Hybrid VMware vclud Use Case fr further details. Page 12 f 18

VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin 2.11 Service Offerings Service fferings within the enterprise can be an effective methd f differentiating types, lcatin, r wners f infrastructure as reflected in an enterprise vclud. The fllwing service fferings map t the business needs that an enterprise clud prvides t its cnsumers. A single cnsumer/line-f- Business/Business Unit may cnsume ne r mre f these three service fferings: Basic Service Offering Unreserved pay fr use class. Designed fr quick start pilt prjects r fr wrklads such as sftware testing that can be charged based n resurces used. Cmmitted Service Offering Prvides reserved resurces (subscriptin mdel) with the ability t burst abve the cmmitted levels if additinal capacity is available. This ffers predictable perfrmance by reserving resurces fr wrklads within a multi-tenant envirnment, while als allwing n-demand self service. Dedicated Service Offering Prvides dedicated cmpute resurces (using resurces specifically dedicated t a given custmer). This ffers predictable perfrmance by reserving dedicated resurces, which is useful fr situatins where security r cmpliance requirements require physical separatin. Table 3. Service Offerings Basic Service Offering Cmmitted Service Offering Dedicated Service Offering Cnsumptin Mdel Pay fr use mdel Allcatin mdel Reservatin mdel Chargeable Unit CPU, memry, strage Resurce pl Resurce pl Targeted Use Cases (but nt limited t) Pre-prductin (test/dev/stage) Nn-business critical Prductin, high perfrmance, security, cmpliance requirements Metering Hurly Mnthly Mnthly 2.11.1 Basic Service Offering The Basic service ffering is an instance-based pay fr use resurce cnsumptin mdel. Each virtual machine prvisined in this virtual datacenter is charged separately and separate billing recrds are prduced fr each virtual machine. Cnsumers using the Basic service tier can be charged fr each hur r part hur f cnsumptin. The fllwing is an example f sme f the cnsideratins fr a Basic service ffering An instance-based mdel refers t the bundling f vcpu and memry tgether int a single virtual machine instance and price. Pricing can be charged by hur f cnsumptin. Memry can be ffered in the fllwing unit ptins: 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and16gb (can ffer up t 1TB memry). Page 13 f 18

VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin vcpu is ffered in the fllwing unit ptins: 1, 2, 4, 8 (can ffer up t 32 vcpu). Pricing can be charged by hur f cnsumptin alng the 24 pssible cmbinatins f memry and vcpu unit ptins. Pricing is nt specified here because it is specific t the enterprise vclud service prvider s infrastructure, capabilities, lcatin, and agreement with their cnsumers. 2.11.2 Cmmitted Service Offering The Cmmitted service ffering uses the allcatin cnsumptin mdel. A user is allcated a virtual datacenter that cntains a certain amunt f CPU (GHz), memry (GB), and strage (GB). The allcatin cnsumptin mdel is defined using tw parameters: the reservatin percentage and the ttal allcatin (als called limit). The reservatin percentage is hw much resurce is guaranteed r cmmitted fr the custmer. The ttal allcatin r limit is the maximum amunt f resurce the custmer can cnsume. 2.11.2.1. Example The fllwing is an example f sme f the cnsideratins fr a Cmmitted service ffering. Fr the Cmmitted service ffering, the reservatin percentage is set t 75% f the ttal allcatin/limit. This means the custmer can burst up t an additinal 25% f resurces they riginally requested. Fr example, if a custmer is allcated 10GHz f CPU resurces, a virtual datacenter is created fr the custmer and 10GHz is allcated fr the custmer. This is the maximum amunt f CPU the custmer can ever cnsume. Of this 10GHz, the enterprise clud service prvider shuld reserve 75%, which is 7.5GHz. This is the amunt f CPU that s guaranteed fr the custmer. The 25%, r 2.5GHz, is available t the custmer if the underlying cluster has available resurces. This mdel allws the service prviders t charge a price that s generally higher than just 7.5GHz given the additinal burstable capacity, but gives custmers the benefit f ptentially paying less than if the resurces were fully guaranteed. Table 4 prvides an example f hw virtual datacenter sizes are defined fr the Cmmitted service ffering. Table 4. VMware vclud Architecture Tlkit Private VMware vclud Service Definitin 2.11.3 Dedicated Service Offering The Dedicated service ffering uses the reservatin cnsumptin-based mdel. An enterprise cnsumer/lob/bu wrks with the enterprise clud prvider t prvisin a cluster f servers that s dedicated t this cnsumer. The hardware (netwrk, strage, servers) is nt shared with ther cnsumers. The cnsumer gets full cntrl ver the reservatin and limit f this set f resurces. This service ffering will likely be a fixed price mnthly subscriptin. 2.12 Cnsumer Capabilities The fllwing is an example f the capabilities cnsumers f the enterprise vclud are able t access fr all f the service tier fferings: User Interface A user interface prtal is the primary custmer interface t the enterprise vclud service. It prvides a cnsistent interface fr interacting with the enterprise vclud services. API The full end-user vclud API is implemented and expsed t the cnsumers t enable prgrammatic access t the enterprise vclud services. Mbility/Elasticity Enterprise IT can take advantage f vclud service prvider resurces t extend its wn private capacity. T the cnsumer, the capabilities appear t prvide additinal capacity that can be prvisined in any quantity at any time. Catalgs Cnsumers can create and publish new catalg f vapp templates, and prvisin new vapps frm catalgs. vapps Cnsumers (r their administratrs) can build new vapps, uplad/dwnlad vapps, clne/create/delete vapps, and perfrm ther peratins t interact with the vapps (pwer n/ff/suspend/resume, remte cnsle, thers) User Management Cnsumers (r their administratrs) can create r delete users, manage rle assignments, and manage user qutas. Netwrking and Security Cnsumers (r their administratrs) can add r remve firewall rules, and cnfigure DHCP settings. Billing Cnsumers can view metering/billing reprts frm the past 12 mnths. Cmpliance Cnsumers can dwnlad relevant lg files frm the past six mnths. 2.13 Service Metering Fr vclud envirnments, resurce metering is essential fr accurately measuring cnsumer usage and shaping cnsumer behavir thrugh chargeback plicies. Enterprises d nt necessarily have the same cst pressures fr an enterprise private vclud as a public vclud service prvider. The requisite chargeback prcedures r plicies may nt exist. An alternative t chargeback is shwback, which attempts t raise awareness f the cnsumptin usage and cst withut invlving frmat accunt prcedures t bill the usage back t the cnsumer s department.
