Get a closer look at processing, review and analysis with highperformance technology The ever-increasing deluge of electronically stored information (ESI) used in litigation is challenging today s legal organizations. The need to quickly and securely store, process, review, analyze and cull key documents and evidence from multiple sources of complex data is stretching budgets and human and IT resources to the limits. Add to that the mounting judiciary interest in technology-assisted document review, and legal organizations are feeling the heat. These unrelenting pressures are compelling law firms and legal departments to tap the power of EDRM technology solutions and boost their IT infrastructures to improve productivity and efficiency, reduce costs and increase profitability. 3
Efficiency is within range Whether you re evaluating a processing and/or review solution for the first time, upgrading your current EDRM technology, or bolstering your IT infrastructure to meet the exploding demands of e-discovery, you can t afford to wait. All evidence points to the CDW Legal Services team s expertise in assisting your legal firm or department to: OPTIMIZE PROCESSING, REVIEW AND ANALYSIS Teamed together, process and review software reduce volumes of collected data, while optimizing search and sorting of digital legal information. On its own, processing software refines/extracts the volumes of raw ESI to minimize the quantity of case-related data. Review software facilitates easy review by multiple groups and attorneys, enabling rapid evaluation of ESI for relevant and responsive documents to produce, as well as privileged or confidential information/ documents to withhold. POWER UP CASE MANAGEMENT, DATA PROTECTION AND COMPLIANCE A robust and resilient IT infrastructure enhances storage, accelerates sharing of ESI and supports the legal software needed for successful case management and litigation. Powerful server technology enables secure onsite storage of litigation data and applications for enhanced management, protection and compliance. Dedicated storage networks provide access to, and retrieval of, legal information anytime, anywhere. Analysis software helps litigation teams compile relevant facts, documents, evidence and investigative research into a centralized repository for improved case assessment. 4

Tracking the EDRM model The Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) set the standards and guidelines for the e-discovery market, providing the framework to drive the capture and access of all types of electronically stored information (ESI); the management of information; the exchange, sharing, and presentation of the information; and the accurate use of that information. To learn more, visit CDW.com/EDRM. PROCESSING Refining the ESI and extracting or transforming the information to create a review platform can accommodate further analysis by attorneys and litigation support teams. REVIEW Accelerate the review process and eliminate work duplication through the creation of document review platforms and privileges, making it easy for multiple groups of attorneys to review documents and work on cases. ANALYSIS Analysis is deployed across all phases of e-discovery, and applying the right tools and processes allows for increased productivity and performance. 2012 ILTA survey recognizes CDW AS TOP LEGAL TECHNOLOGY VENDOR for fifth straight year CDW is a proud member of the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) and the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA). 7

Q&A WITH ADAM OSBERG Executive Account Manager, CDW Legal Services Team Q. What trends and challenges in the marketplace are driving the need for EDRM technology? A: We re seeing two major challenges. First, the amount and complexity of data is overwhelming, and it s growing by the day. Legal teams must quickly access, process and analyze that huge data store from multiple sources and diverse formats like tape drives, email, USB drives, social media and the cloud. Compliance is the second major driver in the marketplace. Rules and regulations in the courts are constantly changing, and the consequences are high if you aren t vigilant. Q: What kinds of IT infrastructure components should be considered to support a legal organization s EDRM solutions? A: Servers and storage are essential. Data requires powerful storage, in a central location, secured and easy to access by team members. The infrastructure should be in place and tested prior to bringing in the EDRM. This ensures that the EDRM solution will run well and at top speed. It avoids the risk of poor initial performance, which can be fatal for internal adoption of the system by team members. A key advantage of working with the CDW Legal Services team is that we have it all under one roof. From infrastructure to software, we bring a bigpicture perspective and all the solutions that go along with it, depending on where our customers are in their EDRM implementation. Q: What s your best EDRM technology advice for forward-looking firms? A: Make sure you have enough storage to meet future data growth needs. Predictive coding should also be actively considered to further save time and money. Use of predictive coding software is becoming more accepted in the courts as a means to automate the e-discovery review. It combines technology and workflow processes to search, filter, classify and weed out irrelevant documents based on key search terms and concepts created by the legal team. Q. What top three tips do you give your customers when they re looking for an EDRM solution? A. Here s what I tell them: 1. Don t do the quick fix. This often turns into a costly mistake. Take a step back. Take a look at the technology; see if it s the right fit for your firm. Then after thorough research, make the move. 2. Plan ahead for your IT needs, and then budget them in. You can see a good ROI if you have a plan in place that aligns technology with your business goals. 3. Stay up to date on your hardware. Schedule refresh cycles. If you do this, your technology will be readily scalable without straining your budget. 13
