Practical Nursing Program Information for Applicants The application deadline is May 15, 2015 at noon. The Practical Nursing Program at ASUMH is designed to prepare the student to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. The technical certificate combines classroom instruction with clinical experience. The course of study meets the requirements of the Arkansas State Board of Nursing for practical nursing programs. The student must maintain a 2.0 grade point average or C average or better in all required coursework in order to graduate and be eligible to apply for the National Council of Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). There is no advanced placement in this program. Persons convicted of a crime may be ineligible to take the licensing exam, NCLEX-PN, to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. State and federal criminal background checks by the Arkansas State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation are required for licensure. It is possible to complete a program of study at ASUMH and be denied the opportunity to take the NCLEX-PN by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. DAY OPTION: Students admitted to the day option will complete the program in approximately 11 months, beginning mid-august and ending at the end of July in the following year. This option follows the ASUMH academic calendar for the Fall, Spring, and Extended Summer Terms. Students in the program attend classes or clinical sessions 6-8 hours per day, four days a week. Application to the Practical Nursing program does not guarantee admission. Class size is limited and all applicants may not be accepted into the program. Admission to the program is competitive. Applicants are considered for the PN program after completing and submitting the following information: 1. Admission to ASUMH 2. Submission of Practical Nursing Application 3. Completion of the HESI A2 admissions exam with a minimum score of 70% 4. Completion of all pre-requisites with a grade of C or better 5. The successful completion of any necessary developmental courses prior to application submission ADMISSION CRITERIA Applicants are considered for the Practical Nursing Program after completing a formal application for admission to ASUMH and submitting it to the Office of Admissions, including submission of all required admission credentials (see the ASUMH Catalog and Student Handbook Admission Section). ALL information must be submitted prior to May 15.

An application for the Practical Nursing program must be completed and returned to the Health Science Coordinator, Sarah Smith, located in Gotaas Hall, H101, prior to May 15 at noon, including all appropriate testing results. Students must complete all pre-requisites with a grade of C or higher. Any applicant seeking transfer credit for pre-requisite courses must submit official transcripts to the Registrar s office. Applicants will not be considered for admission if official transfer credit for pre-requisite courses is not granted by the Registrar s office. NOTE: College Preparatory Courses have to be completed with a grade of C or higher in order to enroll in the pre-requisite classes. Admission into the program is determined according to earned scores on the appropriate admissions test and the pre-requisite GPA. Admissions Test (HESI A2). A score of 70% or higher on each required section is needed for consideration of admission to the PN program. The HESI A2 exam may be taken a maximum of 2 times per application period. After the selection process is completed, applicants will be notified by mail of acceptance or denial. If applicants choose not to accept their position in the program, then the next qualified applicant on the list will be notified. *Students whose primary language is not English must score 79 or higher on reading, listening, and writing skills and 23 or higher on speaking skills TOEFL scores. An official score report must be submitted. This is a requirement of the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. After acceptance into the Practical Nursing Program, the student is required to submit the following: 1. Proof of negative PPD tuberculin skin test or negative chest x-ray if the skin test is positive. 2. Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria immunization. 3. Documentation of completion or initiation of the hepatitis series. Students must complete the first hepatitis vaccine before entering the clinical area in the first semester. (If the student cannot take the series, due to health reasons, the student must sign a waiver.) 4. Proof of American Heart Association BLS CPR certification. 5. Proof of initiation of a Criminal Background Check (asumhbackground.com)

Test Dates for Fall 2015 Admission: All applicants must take the appropriate HESI A2 Entrance Exam prior to the May 15 deadline. Preregistration for the admission exam is mandatory. Preparing for the Exam: ASUMH PN applicants must complete the following sections on the HESI A2: Grammar, Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and General Knowledge 70% score required. Learning Styles and Personality Style not included in admission process but valuable for individual learning. The hours of the Cashier are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. Students will be required to produce their receipt upon arriving at the testing center to take the appropriate tests. Financial Assistance: The General Scholarship deadline is May 15, 2015. There are some scholarships that are specifically available for nursing students.
