Hazard Type : Water Logged (Update # 01) Location : Tala, Satkhira District, Bangladesh Reporting Date : October 05,. Time: 07.30 PM BST Prepared by : Shofiul Alam, Emergency Response Coordinator, MABFO Situation Report, No 190 Recent monsoon flood resulted in south western district of Satkhira due to unusual rainfall. The most affected upazila is Taala Upazila. Four unions are totally flooded and other two unions are partially flooded. Muslim Aid field assessment team visited the area immediate after the situation get worse and arranged FGD, in depth interview, collect data from union parishad to assist planning for relief and recovery response, supplementing initial rapid response. Among the visited six unions, 5370 HH affected with recent logging condition, drinking water scarcity and collapse sanitation facilities which causes unrest situation to live. Road network destructed and therefore water logged people could not collect proper food, water or baby food from market. About 3618 family take place in safe place and 1477 are staying in the houses and 1219 migrated in the other area or relatives houses. Immediate support need: supply of drinking water, temporary toilet and dry food. 01. Background Tala is Upazila under Satkhira districts surrounded by Kesobpur, Assasuni,satkhira Sadar, Dumuria and the river Kobodak pass through the Upazila, which is one of the drainage congestion systems of the Jessore and Satkhira water system. But sedimentation process hampers the water system of the area last few years. People of the area getting towards water logged situation. As of the sedimentation, river bed becomes raised and heavy rainfall causes water logged situation in the area and damage of embankment and water overflow.heavy rainfall during last few days cause water logged situation and water overflow around Jalalpur, Islamkathi, Surulia, Magura, Tetulia and Tala Sadar Union of Tala Upazila. If it continues like this it could cause water overflow other part of the area and causes huge disruption of the life and livelihood system of area. 02. Latest Overview of the affected areas: Latifa Khatun, a pregnant woman of the char kanaidia described the situation, she said that it is really worse situation of me and also for my family, I am staying in this roadside, which is really hard for me and basically facing problem of sanitation and also safe drinking water. This is only not for the situation for me but also for all of the people of the area. According to the findings of Muslim Aid assessment team, Tala sadar, Tetulia, Jalalpur, Islamkati, Magura and Dhandia unions of Tala Sadar Upazila affected with the water logged situation due to monsoon flood. The most affected area is tala sadar and islamkati unions of Tala Upazilla under Satkhira district. 3820 HHs under 45 villages of Tala Sadar upazila are affected (see the annex 01). affected HHs, 3618 HHs move to temporary shelter, 1219 HHs moved to relative house and 1477 HHs still now in their houses without proper facilities of sanitation or drinking water. 4550 acres of standing crop and 6150 acres of Gher have already flooded and water logged still now. Approximately 27,900 people surrounded by water since last week and day by day the situation worsen. Till the reporting date, 18,800 people have been reported taking temporary shelter in highland. The sanitation facilities totally collapsed and therefore stagnant water pollution increase which causes different water born diseases like diarrohea or skin diseases. Along with sanitation facilities, drinking water scarcity is another suffering phenomenon as that area naturally lack of drinking water. Women and adolescent girls face most difficult situation, sometimes they have to wait till darkness. Table 01: Overall situation of Tala Upazila. 03. Impact of the water overflow As of water overflow in Tala sadar, Islamkati, jalalpur and Tetulia of Tala completely damaged and two others union has been submerged as of the recent torrential rain and water overflow and cause water logged situation in more than 45 villages of the different area. As of the water logged situation raised in the area more than 3800 fall in the tress situation and passing really tough time. As of water stage, people of the area has been passing unsecured condition by Sanitation, safe drinking water, temporary shelter and threat of water born diseases. About 3618 family take place in safe place and 1477 are staying in the houses and 1219 migrated in the other area or relatives houses. 03. 01. WASH facility and vulnerable life of Women Water and sanitation system has been collapsed in the area cause huge hardship to women, children and disable person. Women have to wait until night for the sanitation facility as there is not available sanitary latrine. Drinking water supply is too poor and GO or NGO yet not support any emergency relief. 03.02 Risk to water born diseases If this situation continues like this water born diseases will outbreak within very short time as though people of the area lost sanitation facility and safe drinking water. As the sanitation facility is totally collapsed, stagnant water polluted in an alarming rate which causes diarrohea or different skin diseases. 03.03 Communication system Almost every road and feeder road of the different union has been submerged. Communication system of the area becomes collapsed. There is not any communication rather than boat, in the houses of the people and it looks very difficult to people reach the market and collection of safe drinking water. The entire katcha road already washed out and in some places it is difficult to walk through the road. 03.04 Educational Situation This is the month of October and children of the area waiting for final exam of the year; it is really crucial time for the children to prepare themselves for upcoming exam, as of the submerged situation of the area 15,000 children of 18 educational institutes could not continue the educational program. 03.05 Standing crops October is the month of Aman crop production, as of the uncertain outbreak of water causes huge damage of standing crops, peoples of the area are suspecting if this situation continue next four days it will totally damage more than 3100 acre of paddy filed, which will cause loss of more than 2core BDT(20million) in cash (see Annex 02). 03.06 Fisheries As of the submerged situation more than 4000 acre of fish gare washed away. Shrimp and other fish washed away which causes a great economical degradation. It cause loss of more than 6 core (60 million) of taka (see Annex 02). 04. Humanitarian Initiative: Muslim Aid has already deployed an emergency team to data collection and observes the immediate situation at filed level, who are regularly updating the situation of the area in regular basis. Only Upazila parshad has given 10kg rice to 250, but still they are out of any other facility like safe drinking water, food package, and sanitation facility. Page 3 of 7
05.
