THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF LOGISTICS & TRANSPORT, NIGERIA INFORMATION GUIDE TO MEMBERSHIP AND EDUCATION INTRODUCTION The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) is the leading International Professional body for all sectors of the Transport and Logistics Industry. It was founded in the United Kingdom in 1919 and granted a Royal Charter on the 26 th of November, 1926. The Institute was established to promote knowledge of the science and art of Logistics and Transport and to provide a source of authoritative views for communication to government, industry and the community at large. The international Institute s Patron is Her Majesty, the Queen of England. CILT, NIGERIA CILT Nigeria was established in 1958 under the umbrella of the present body in UK with over branches across the country. Since inception, the Institute has been involved in overseeing, regulating, training and certification of logistics and transport professionals nationwide. CILT has international network in over 33 countries which includes; United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, China, Malaysia, North America, Canada, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Kenya, Uganda etc. with over 33,000 members working in over 100 countries of the world. WHO WE ARE The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport is an International Professional body in the Logistics and Transport with the headquarters in the United Kingdom charged with the function of finance and administration while CILT Ireland and Hong Kong are saddled with the responsibility of Education and Membership respectively. Other National Councils in the world are largely autonomous but operating under the international Council s rules and regulations. In recognition of the ever growing importance of its status and activities, the CILT revised its executive structure in 1990, one of the resulting benefits is greater autonomy for and recognition of larger National Councils. We are professional body that partner with institutions of higher learning, statutory organizations and the industry to produce the necessary manpower for the industry. We also act as advocates for the industry as the need arises. OUR AIM & OBJECTIVES Efficient movement of people and goods is vital to the quality of life enjoyed by society and the effective functioning of trade, the economy and essential services. Thus, it is desirable that all those involved in the planning, operation and management of logistics and transport should be well qualified for their work. This also applies to people engaged in allied activities, such as

logistics and transport education, consultancy and research. They all make a crucial contribution to the total transport scene. AIMS CILT has constantly strived to achieve three aims; To ensure an adequate supply of qualified personnel through an internationally recognized education and training system To keep qualified individuals up to date throughout their professional working lives To play an active and influential role in shaping logistics and transport policies for the future development of the sector. OBJECTIVES In seeking to achieve the above aims, CILT objectives can be summarized as being to: promote the study of science and art of logistics and transport provide educational programmes with assessment and examinations leading to a professional grade within the CILT. encourage members active participation in continuing professional development. cooperate with the educational sector and other professional institutions with the objective of raising standards foster investigation and research into the development and improvement of logistics and transport by every practical means. initiate regular meetings and exchange of ideas of those interested in transport through conferences, discussion groups, seminars. BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP It is important to note that by joining the Institute: You will gain a life-long professional anchor for your career You will enjoy a unique source of support You will have access to knowledge and networking that will assist you to develop and succeed throughout your professional life MEMBERSHIP OF THE INSTITUTE There are six (6) categories of CILT s Membership, namely; Student Member Affiliate Member (MILT) Chartered Member (CMILT) Chartered Fellow (FCILT) Honorary Fellow (FCILT) STUDENT This is the starting grade for those who are between age sixteen (16) and twenty-five (25) studying a course in logistics, transport and other related field from recognized institutions. AFFILIATE The grade of Affiliate applies to those who do not possess the relevant qualification and experience for MILT but are interested to be members of the institute. However, progress to higher grades of membership is open provided the candidate passes the Institute s qualifying examinations or other exempting qualifications. Cost of Registration: #13,000.00 Every benefit of membership attaches except voting rights and post nominal. MEMBER (MILT) This grade of membership is open to those who have passed the CILT International Diploma, posses other relevant qualifications and at least 3 years relevant work experience at supervisory position. CHARTERED Cost of Processing MEMBER and (CMILT) International Certification Fees: #26,000:00 and 40:00 Every benefit of membership attaches including post nominal (CMILT) after your name This grade of membership is open to those who have passed the CILT International Advanced Diploma, possesses other relevant qualifications (usually an approved degree) and have at least 5 years relevant work experience in logistics and transport out of which 2 years must be at managerial position. Every benefit of membership attaches including voting rights and post nominal (CMILT) after your name; Cost of Processing and International Certification Fees: #36,000:00 and 50:00

CHARTERED FELLOW (FCILT) This grade of membership is open to those who are already Chartered Members, possesses other relevant qualifications and have at least 7 years post CMILT in top management position in the logistics and transport industry. Every benefit of membership attaches, including voting rights and post nominal (FCILT) after your name; Cost of Processing and International Certification Fees: #50,000:00 and 60:00 HONORARY FELLOW (FCILT) This grade is open to eminent personalities who have distinguished themselves in the logistics and transport industry and whose contributions has been significant to the development of the profession. The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport educational programmes is developed not only to increase your knowledge of logistics and transport, but will also help to develop your operational and management skills. The Institute s professional qualifications are aligned with the United Kingdom National Qualification Framework and accepted by the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria. While

the United Kingdom qualification framework equates the International Advanced Diploma to Bachelors Degree the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria recognizes it as HND. The CILT qualification is used by public and organized private sectors for employment and other business purposes. Holders of CILT professional education and membership can access employment and business opportunities in not less than 100 countries of the world. The CILT education can be used to gain admission to higher institutions of learning locally and internationally. Currently, there are three (3) Levels of CILT Educational Qualifications: 1. National Professional Diploma in Logistics & Transport 2. International Diploma in Logistics & Transport 3. International Advanced Diploma in Logistics & Transport OBJECTIVES OF CILT PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS In recognition of the dearth of skilled manpower and the need to develop competency at the junior, supervisory and management levels, The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport has designed the National Professional Diploma, International Diploma and International Advanced Diploma in Logistics and Transport programmes as a means of professional certification aimed at bridging the identified human capacity gap. The specific objectives of the programmes are to: a. Produce competent, skilled and efficient manpower in the Logistics and Transport Industry at the operational, supervisory and management levels b. Develop a distinct career path for people to obtain professional qualifications in any area of Logistics, supply chain, Transport and other related aspects c. Lay solid foundation necessary for people to eventually professionalize d. Enable candidates acquire professional skills and knowledge required to support Logistics and Transport operations e. Make candidates acquire the right professional ethics both locally and globally from inception to the peak of the profession. National Professional Diploma in Logistics & Transport (NPDLT) ii. International Diploma in Logistics & Transport (IDLT) iii. International Advanced Diploma in Logistics & Transport (IADLT) BACKGROUND OF THE COURSES NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA IN LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORT This level covers the foundational areas of logistics, supply chain and transport. The course as designed takes care of the general and functional areas, and meets the required skills for first line supervisors and hands-on personnel. On completion, this course equips holders to be able to balance the generic and specialist areas perfectly. In addition, to the specialist courses, we offer a range of generic courses such as the Use of English, Business Communication/Computer appreciation, Economics, Basic Accounting, Statistics and Law. On completion, successful candidates will be able to relate very well with the society at large while at the same time remain fit for purpose for the industry. Candidates who successfully complete this programme will be capable of working efficiently in operational positions across freight and fleet operations, inventory and warehousing, transport administration, passenger transport and transport insurance, etc. INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMA IN LOGISTICS & TRANSPORT This is a higher level qualification aimed at those already working in the industry/sector at middle management level. This qualification builds on knowledge gained from the National Professional Diploma course. The course is also aimed at those wish to develop a strategic view of logistics and transport operations and have the capacity to review operational activities. INTERNATIONAL ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN LOGISTICS & TRANSPORT The Advanced Diploma is aimed at those who want to acquire strategic management, leadership and decision-making skills in logistics, transport and other related fields.

On completion, successful candidates would become grounded in analytical concepts, research methodologies and how to use them in their day to day management role. It is the final level of the CILT International Professional Qualifications. This level of CILT qualification builds on the National Professional Diploma and International Diploma foundations. The course as designed presents the conceptual idea of integration of logistics and transport planning into the strategic planning process. Those who are successful in the advanced Diploma course will be able to meet the knowledge standards for Chartered Membership (CMILT). This is however subject to a minimum of 5years work experience at a senior level in the logistics and transport sector. ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS National Diploma in Logistics and Transport: GCE, SSCE, WASC, O/Level with 5 credits in not more than two sittings, holders of National Diploma in non logistics and transport fields. International Diploma in Logistics and Transport: Holders of National Diploma in Logistics and Transport, HND, first degree in any discipline from recognized institutions. International Advanced Diploma in Logistics and Transport: Holders of International Diploma in Logistics and Transport, HND, BSc in logistics and transport or related disciplines from recognized Institutions. NOTE : Matured candidates who do not meet the above specified entry qualifications may be considered. For the award of all qualifications, a candidate must have scored at least 50% in all modules.
