Open multi-provider delivery of TV services over IP networks
Introduction Content of the presentation 8 Introduction to DVB-IPI and its application to Medianet open system vision 8 Challenges in realistic application of this concept 8 Outcomes and conclusion 2
What is DVB? Digital Video Broadcasting project 8 Industry led consortium of over 260 broadcasters, manufacturers, network operators, software developer, regulatory bodies 8 Over 35 countries 8 Objectives: - Design global standards for delivery of digital television and data services. 8 Organization Steering Board Theme(s) Commercial module Requirements Technical module Workshops Proposal DVB votes Publish Blue Book (via ETSI) 3
DVB IPI : basics Home Network Reference Model Prime target of DVB IPI Phase 1 spec (high volume low cost equipement Dos not cover home networking 4
DVB IPI : multiservice DVB IPI Phase 1 Scenario 2 Two DNGs & Two Home Networks Service Provider A Service Provider B DNG A HNED A DNG B Multiple Home Networks One DNG per Home Network Home Networks not connected Single/Multiple Service providers Single/Multiple HNEDs per DNG HNED B 2 5
DVB-IPI : Operation DVB IPI 8 Main steps: STB network connection Network access initialization STB network configuration SD Entry Points discovery IP configuration + Service location (domain name) Base : DHCP Domain name resolution for discovering the DVB services entries. Base : DNS SP discovery DVB information collection Service provider(s) discovery information collection. Base : HTTP (pull) or IGMP (push) Service(s) offering Base : HTTP 6
Broadcast IP-TV Open multi-provider Architecture Encoder, splitter IP access Service 1 (TVBlue) : 4 TV channels DVB-IP Set-top box IP Home Network Service 2 (GoodTV): 3 TV channels SD&S service? SD&S server name Available services? TVblue (list channels), GoodTV (list channels) Join TVblue, channel2@ip Video@IP DNS Service discovery (SD&S) 7
IP television today Users get a full bundle : - ADSL modem, IP STB, DSL Access, Internet service, IP television - Television bouquet, Telco, hardware are unique vertical packages The system is engineered and developped by each Telco, with diverging options - HTML and browser based : close to IT model - Multicast DVB-SI based : close to broadcast TV model - Mixed models High investment and low flexibility - Long commitments needed by all stake holders 8
We had a dream.. Step 1 : Purchase a retail STB - video quality, ergonomy, brand Step 2 : Subscribe to broadband - speed, QOS, web hosting, mail boxes Step 3 : List and select TV services - Typology, VOD, pricing model Step 5 : Zap - automatic complete accurate channel list Step 6 : Discover and select extra services - EPG, content push, videophone 9
DVB IPI Advantages Solutions for Audio/Video service offerings and terminals (End-to-end solutions) Model for manufacturers, network providers, service providers, content provider & existing broadcasters. Interactivity is MHP, independent of the transport layer (DVB-S, DVB-T, DVB-H, DVB-IP, ) 8 For example, in Medianet we have added a MHP-PVR Common metadata, service descriptors and service discovery mechanisms: produce once but distribute several times 10
DVB IPI and Medianet 8 Transport of MPEG services over IP networks Content access + Content description (via EPG); MHP-PVR implementation in progress. 8 Structuring interoperability between STB, TELCO & ISP and TV service provider. 8 Ability to handle multiple service providers over the same access networks 8 Creating a stable core to for IP television subsystems STB, access network, services information base, electronic guides Mutualisation of core development and validation => reduced system cost 8 Better acceptance from end user and industry Harmonized interfaces, processes Mutual commitments of stake holders less driven by technical constraints Service bundling 11

What we ve learn? DVB-IPI can replace many proprietary variants of service discovery and content distribution. For traditional broadcasters (DVB-S or C) DVB-IPI is easy to deploy (Full SI TS supported, same source of content). DVB-IPI is convenient to provide interactive and multimedia services (MHP middleware can work with DVB-IPI). Guidelines for DVB-IP Phase 1 Handbook (IPI 2038): This document is targeted to be used by anyone wishing to understand or implement the DVB-IP specification. (Approval at next IPI meeting on 29th of November) 13
IPTV and HN Home networking soars on broadband explosion 8 DVB actively developping missing standards IPTV and IP HN provides unique possibility to grow the market through: 8 Leverage IPTV experience through IP HN - When you buy additional IP devices, enjoy content in them through your existing networked STB 8 Leverage IP HN experience though IPTV content - When you subscribe to IPTV service, enjoy content on existing IP HN devices everywhere Challenges: 8 Seamless interoperability between IP STB and IP HN devices 8 Horizontal retail business models based on open standards (DVB-IPI, DLNA,, together!) 14
Outcomes and perspective Outcomes 8 Medianet open model is possible with DVB-IPI approach 8 This concept is applicable to realistic embedded environment as fused in mass volume deployements 8 DVB-IPI implementation guidelines enhanced with Medianet results Perspectives 8 Keep on feeding Medianet results to DVB-HN and IPI 8 Promote Medianet open model for IP television system 8 Use Medianet approach to address multi-network systems e.g. satellite/ip hybrid 8 Jump to industrial phase: create and deploy IP television systems based on Medianet concepts 15
