STATE BOARD FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION February 9, 2011 TOPIC: College Grants PRESENTED BY: Kristin Corash, AVP Strategic Planning and Research RELATIONSHIP TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN: By garnering grant dollars to help support, programs, services, and capital construction, CCCS colleges are fostering operational excellence and supporting the financial stability of the system s institutions. EXPLANATION: Since April 2010, CCCS has been reporting the colleges grant activity. This includes ongoing grants, newly awarded grants, pending grants, and closed grants. Beginning January 1, 2011, grants are being reported on an annual basis so that any grants that close during the year will be removed from the report on January 1 of the following year. As of January 20, 2011, CCCS colleges have been awarded 127 grants worth over $54 million. This is lower than the $85 million reported in December 2010 because the system colleges closed out $31 million worth of grants that had been completed. Most of the grants received are federal grants. Because Congress has obligated specific funds to improve education outcomes for low income and Hispanic students, colleges serving low income students and/or designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) have many more opportunities for large federal grants than other institutions. For instance, although TSJC has only nine grants, it has the highest grant awarded amount of any CCCS colleges. The remaining HSIs serving a high percentage of low income students include PCC, OJC, and CCD. These institutions all have significantly more grant dollars than the other colleges. As the year progresses, the colleges will apply for and obtain more grants and the number of applied for and awarded grants will increase along with the awarded amounts. Additionally, some multi-year grants will come to a close. It is these closed grants that will be removed from reporting at the end of the calendar year. So, January 1, 2012 will begin with a lower amount than will be reported in December 2011. 2
