JOURNALISM Grades 11-12 Mass Media II CONTENT STANDARD 11-12 JII 1: The student will understand how the history of mass media parallels the social and political history of the United States. 11-12JII 1.1 The student is able to identify and explain the major events which have influenced and continue to influence the development of the newspaper industry. 1.2 The student is able to explain how the printed press in America developed. 1.3 The student is able to describe how the freedom of press developed. 1.4 The student is able to outline the development and impact of radio and television. 1.5 The student is able to recognize and accurately describe the issues facing journalism in the 21 st century. 1.6 The student is able to accurately describe the impact of technology on the news media. 1.7 The student is able to understand and appreciate the long development of the mass communications media from their earliest know origins to the present day. 1.8 The student is aware of his rights as a citizen, in regards to newsgathering. The intent of this standard is that the student will understand the impact of historical events and technological discoveries on the news media over the years. Students should be aware of other major influences as well, including corporate and private ownership of media outlets such newspapers and broadcasting corporations, and the events which have helped shape newsgathering and reporting. Students should understand the impact and importance of the First Amendment and the role that newspapers have played and now play in a democratic society. Identifies major influences of historical events, and recognize how they have shaped the reporting of news. Identifies technological inventions and their impact on publishing and reporting. Recognizes the different kinds of newspapers and newsmagazines and the ways in which they serve their readers. Explains how the history of journalism parallels the social and political history of the U.S. Explains the role mass media plays in society. Accurately summarizes the development of mass media in the U.S. Explains the importance of the First Amendment and its impact on news reporting. Lists the major developments in broadcast journalism.

Media Terminology CONTENT STANDARD 11-12 JII 2: The student will understand the bases by which news media functions in a democratic society, both economically and socially. 11-12JII 2.1 The student is able to define terms commonly used in both written and broadcast media. 2.2 The student is able to list and explain the functions of the news media. 2.3 The student is able to identify the various parts and purposes of the newspaper. 2.4 The student is able to demonstrate knowledge of news processes and production as it applies to written and broadcast media. 2.5 The student is able to explain the relationship between advertising and the news media. 2.6 The student understands the effect of the media on their own tastes and values. 2.7 The student learns to become a more discrimination consumer of, as well as contributor to the news media. The intent of this standard is that the student will understand the processes involved and the professional terms and vocabulary used in the news media. The student will also demonstrate an understanding of how profits are generated by news organizations, how news information is generated from start to finish, how newspapers may be effected by corporate interests and owners. The student will also understand how the news media functions n a democratic society. Defines and identifies the various parts of a newspaper, such as columns, editorials, world news, comics, etc. Defines terms used in the news media such as cutline, byline, kicker, lead, etc. Explains the functions of a newspaper, such as political, sentry, record keeping, etc. Accurately determines the amount of space devoted to advertising. Critically evaluates news stories, columns and editorials. Develops news judgement through study and discussion of the elements of news. Recognizes the different kinds of newspapers and magazines and the ways in which they serve their readers. Understands the role mass media plays in society. (continues)

Ethical and Legal Limitations CONTENT STANDARD 11-12 JII 3: The student will understand the responsibilities of the news media. 11-12JII 3.1 The student is able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions the media must fulfill in modern society. 3.2 The student is able to identify the criteria used to evaluate the performance of the various media. 3.3 The student is able to demonstrate knowledge of the ethical principles of journalism. 3.4 The student is able recognize the major criticisms of the press 3.5 The student is able to demonstrate knowledge of libel laws. 3.6 The student is able to familiarize himself/herself with major court rulings regarding the scholastic press. The intent of this standard is that the student will be aware of the ethical and legal limitations of the press in a democratic society. The student will also be able to apply those limitations to the production of both written and broadcast news. The student will understand why there are restrictions and what purposes those restrictions serve in protecting individual rights of freedom. Explains the application of libel laws to news reporting. Demonstrates knowledge of libel laws. Demonstrates knowledge of ethics and their application to news reporting. Understands the importance of major court rulings regarding freedom of the press. Demonstrates knowledge of ethics and their application to news reporting. Understands the importance of major court rulings regarding freedom of the press. Interviewing and Gathering Information CONTENT STANDARD 11-12 JII 4: The student will write news stories and columns for publication in the school newspaper. 11-12JII 4.1 The student is able to write a monthly news story using pyramid organization techniques. 4.2 The student is able to write a monthly column following a given format. 4.3 The student is able to edit news stories and columns for proper grammar, style and organization. 4.4 The student is able to perform an interview. 4.5 The student is able to generate ideas by brainstorming. 4.6 The student is able to obtain information by using a variety of techniques and sources. 4.7 The student is able to take and organize interview notes and similar information. 4.8 The student is able to apply basic writing techniques and grammar to news stories. The intent of this standard is that the student will develop interviewing and note-taking skills in order to gather information from both primary and secondary sources for a variety of news stories. Students will also be able to write acceptable news stories for publication in the school newspaper applying acceptable ethical and legal criteria, as well as pyramid organization techniques. Students will write columns focusing on issues and personal experiences. Generates story ideas. Includes relevant information in the creation of news stories. Organizes information into an acceptable format. Displays proper note-taking techniques and skills. Gathers sufficient information in generating a news story or column. Completes assignments in a timely fashion, according to assigned deadlines. Applies good news story writing ingredients such as leads, five Ws', attribution, etc. Uses cooperative grouping techniques to generate suggestions for actual news stories. Applies the writing process to story and column production Completes drafts based on peer editing suggestions and teacher conferencing. (continues)
