AUTHENTIC CLOISONNÉ This is the traditional method of producing lapel pins and considered to be the highest quality of the many pin techniques. Cloisonné pins are die-struck copper, in which finely ground glass colors are placed in the recessed areas of the pin and baked at high temperatures then polished smooth giving the colors a rich, translucent, glass like appearance. There are a limited amount of cloisonné colors available - only about 160 and the colors cannot be PMS color matched. Similar to authentic cloisonné except that by using a special resin, PMS color matching is achievable. The pin surface is polished smooth giving it the same hand polished feel as an authentic cloisonné pin. Hard enamel cloisonné pins are a great solution when the high quality of cloisonné is wanted but PMS color matching is limitations apply. 1
DIE STRUCK SOFT ENAMEL This technique is the most common technique for lapel pins. The pins are die struck, color- filled and baked much the same as with Hard Enamel Cloisonné. It is the polishing that creates the difference in the techniques, whereas hard enamel is polished smooth, in this technique, the metal lines trapping the color are raised and the enamel is recessed or lower than the metal lines around it. This creates a look and feel of dimension. Epoxy can be added to create a smooth finish at no additional charge. PMS color matching at no additional charge. ETCHED SOFT ENAMEL A chemical process where the design is acid etched into a thinner metal then that used in die struck pins, enabling us to achieve finer detail. The pin is lighter and thinner than a die stuck pin and the recessed areas are not as deep, giving a smooth feel close to that of hard enamel cloisonné, without the epoxy but due to the thinner metal, this technique does not have the high end look or feel of hard enamel cloisonné. Epoxy is available at no charge. PMS color matching at no additional charge. DIE STRUCK WITH ANTIQUE FINISHES 2
This technique is unique as it has a two-tone look creating a fine jewelry like appearance. The raised metal is shiny and the recessed area is sandblasted, giving it a matt or brushed look to create a contrast, without color. Hard or Soft enamel color may be added to recessed areas in combination with the sandblast for an even more unique look and higher perceived value. Pewter is a metal alloy, traditionally 85 to 99 percent tin, with the remainder consisting of copper and antimony, acting as hardeners, with the addition of lead. To avoid any lead issues, we recommend die casting or plating the pewter piece, antique silver plating has a similar look of un-plated pewter. Die casting is the process of forcing molten metal under high pressure into mold cavities (which are machined into dies). The die casting method is especially suited for designs that have small 2D detail and intricate 3D designs. 3
Silkscreen print offers an alternative to using metal lines to separate colors. As some artwork does not lend itself to having metal trap lines or the customer requires their art to be reproduced exactly without changes, a printed pin is the answer. In this technique, the solid PMS colors are printed one at a time onto the metal surface and then cut into the desired shape. Offset print is similar to silkscreen print but used when a customers artwork has shaded or gradient colors in the design or we are matching a picture or photo. PMS colors will not be matched. Epoxy is added to protect the printed surface. PVC is a highly versatile and flexible material for creating unique, colorful designs. You can combine colors, raised surfaces, and different textures using 2D and 3D for varying levels of dimension. 4
