An early adopter of human patient simulation, the Department of Anesthesiology founded the lab in the spring of 1994 with the very first commercial METI (then Loral) HPS. We ve always been a very early adopter of technology, says Levine. We re proud of our innovation. Today, the HELPS Center is known for its leadingedge simulations for professional licensing, retraining and competency assessment. In addition to offering regular Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) courses, the HELPS Center has conducted high stakes competency assessment for medical licensing bodies based in Vermont, New Jersey and New York. Using HPS simulation, the staff has remediated physicians who have been remanded by the New York Office of Professional Medical Conduct due to bad outcomes. The center also retrains individual anesthesiologists who have been on prolonged hiatus or who want to expand their practices. The clinical staff creates the training and assessment scenarios on the HPS. There is no alternative for us, says Dr. Levine. With the types of simulation we do at Sinai, we would not feel comfortable or be capable of creating them with any simulator other than an HPS. It immediately lends the fidelity that we need.

Health Science HPS-020 Standard Features * HPS in Action Testimonials Fox VALLEY TECHnICAL COLLEGE Appleton, Wisconsin When a hospital in Appleton, Wisconsin closed its surgical unit, the surgical nursing staff retrained on CAE Healthcare s HPS. We worked with the all the nurses being transferred, says Barbar Tuchscherer, chairman of the Allied Health program at Fox Valley Technical College. They had to relearn cardiac and respiratory care. Because of the HPS physiology, we were able to use different medications they weren t familiar with or hadn t used in a long time. In addition to training nursing, EMS and allied health students, Fox Valley Technical College contracts its simulation training to hospitals and healthcare agencies year-round. The ThedaStar flight crew landed a helicopter on campus to practice for their intubation recertification on the HPS. With the HPS physiology, they could see gases declining and decide whether or not to do a needle tracheotomy, says EMS Trainer and Simulation Coordinator Bob Sternhagen. The HPS has also simulated a drug overdose, a head injury and a cardiac arrest in a refresher course for Wisconsin Department of Corrections nurses. The center is responsive to the changing healthcare climate, and can create HPS scenarios on short notice. For example, the center recently trained a hospital unit on new chest tube protocols and equipment. We contract with agencies to enhance their skills and bring new skills to their existing employees, Tuchscherer says. The HPS-020 was designed with nursing, respiratory therapy, and emergency medicine students in mind. The Health Science HPS suits community college-based programs exceptionally well, as these programs generally cover a broad range of educational endeavors. Full-Body InstrumENTED Adult Mannequin Hps-020 includes: Breath and Heart Sounds; Patient Voice Variable Airway Resistance; Variable Lung and Chest Wall Compliance; Two Compartment Lung Model; Variable Shunt Fraction, Oxygen Consumption and Control of Breathing; Difficult or Normal Airway; Variable O 2 Consumption, CO 2 Production; Volatile Agent Uptake and Distribution Model Carotid, Brachial, Radial, Femoral, Popliteal and Pedal Pulses; Variable Baroreceptor Reflex Model with Automatic Blood Pressure Control; Intravascular Volume Model; Hemodynamic Parameter Control with Vascular Resistances, Compliances and Cardiac Contractility, Ischemia and Disrhythmias; Cardiac Tamponade Genital/Urinary System; Neuromuscular Blockade Thumb Twitch; Reactive Eyes System Interfaces and Controls: Computer and Control Rack System Software: Müse Four SCE Development Licenses Integrated Applications for Anesthesia, Ob/Gyn, Allied Health, ACLS and Pediatric Medicine (Pediatric HPS only) Preprogrammed Complex Pathologies Six Patient Profiles Physiological and Pharmacological Models Pharmacology Library TouchPro Patient Monitor Software Trauma Features: Pneumothorax Needle Decompression Chest Tube Placement and Management ACls Features: Chest Compression with Cardiac Output Defibrillation Transthoracic Cardiac Pacing 5-Lead ECG AED Integration Patient Monitoring: TouchPro Patient Monitor Computer User Utility Software: Data Recorder Scenario Editor Patient Editor Support and Maintenance, Installation and Training: Basic System Support and Maintenance Orientation Training Course Two Seats at In-House Training Options: Enhanced Drug Recognition System Instructor Remote Laptop Wireless Full-Function Monitor Interface Pharmacology Editor Pericardiocentesis Trauma/Disaster Casualty Kit Diagnostic Peritoneal Lavage PediaSIM Plug and Play Pediatric Mannequin Moulage Kit METI FX Hands-Free Cable Kit Basic On-Site or In-House Training Advanced On-Site or In-House Training System Support and Maintenance Upgrade (Extended, Premier or Premier Plus) hps human PatiENT SimulATor 10 6

Müse and TouchPro With the Müse interface, the HPS is now easier to use to train physicians, students and healthcare teams. Simulated Clinical Experiences (SCEs) bundle ready-to-go patient, scenarios, educational content and setup preferences that automatically load together when you run a SCE. SCE timeline provides the ability to place bookmarks throughout a scenario and return to the patient s book-marked physiology at any point. Patient status display can be customized to show vital signs, cardiac output, respiratory signals and more, including Sp0 2, ECGs and capnogram. Recent Event Logs on the Run Screen keep you updated, while complete event and physiological data is logged in the SCE history. Scenarios automatically load as part of the SCE. Scenario states and progression can be controlled directly from the Run Screen. Controls allow you to operate on-the-fly by adjusting model parameters and using overrides. Patient reset button allows you to quickly save and return to the patient s original baseline physiology without having to restart the SCE. 7 www.caehealthcare.com

You asked, and we listened. With Müse, you have more control over your patient s physiological parameters and more flexibility to create scenarios.
