Short bio -3- In September 1983, I started to work at the faculty-of-economics-in-preparation of the University of Limburg in Maastricht. I was member of a group of 6 staff members that prepared the education and research program of this youngest economics faculty in the Netherlands. The group was chaired by prof. Dr. W. Albeda, former minister of Social Affairs in the Netherlands and prepared an economics curriculum according to the principles of Problem Based Learning, the didactic method of the University. The first group of about 100 students was welcomed in September 1984. Now, in 2011, the School of Business and Economics of Maastricht University (mind the change in the name of the Faculty and of the University) is among the best rated faculties in the Netherlands and hosts 4000 students and about 350 fte employees (both staff members and administration). In 2002, the faculty received an AACSB accreditation. As vicedean of education, I wrote the self-evaluation for this accreditation. In 2005, the faculty received an EQUIS accreditation and in 2008 the EQUIS re-accreditation. As vice-dean of internationalization and strategic development I was responsible for the re-accreditation report. In 2006 the MBA programs of the Universiteit Maastricht Business School received an AMBA accreditation. I was involved as member of the Board of Universiteit Maastricht Business School (UMBS) and as member of the Academic Council of the Euro*MBA. In September 2009 I was elected as chair of the Academic Council of the Euro*MBA. Being one of the founding fathers of this faculty implied that I have fulfilled a large number of management tasks, ranging from setting up an economics library in 1983 to being the associate dean of education (1998-2001) with full responsibility for all education programs, examinations regulations and student facilities of this faculty. Besides, I have been involved in setting up and coordinating a large number of courses and programs. From 2005, I am associate dean for internationalization and strategic development. From September 2010, I am vice-dean of the School of Business and Economics. In 1990 I started to develop a track in monetary economics. In close cooperation with prof. Dr. C. Oort (member of the board of the ABN, the second largest Dutch bank and part-time professor in Maastricht) I developed a course in International Financial Markets and International Banking and a course in European Monetary Integration. In 1992, Clemens Kool joined the faculty as associate professor in monetary economics and between 1996 2002 he held a chair in this field. Together with prof. Kool I developed another 4 courses in the track in monetary economics. Besides, we have developed a second year course in International Monetary Economics. After prof. Kool left Maastricht I developed a program in Financial Economics which was accredited by the NVAO in 2006. This program is a joint program of the departments of Finance, Economics and Econometrics. Since 2006, I coordinate the European Economic Policy track in the International Economic Studies program and since 2007 I coordinate a minor on Doing Business in Asia and I am involved in the development of a program in Euro-Asian Business and Law Studies in cooperation with the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. In addition, I coordinate internships in the department. At the start of the Faculty, the research program was centered on three themes: labor economics, economics of the public sector and the economics of technical change. Because as a student I focused on labor economics and on monetary economics, I opted to join the labor economics program, which was chaired by prof. Dr. Joan Muysken (chair in macroeconomics) and we agreed that the topic Tax shifting and Wage Bargaining would fit quite well in this program and would be a nice and interesting topic for a PhD thesis.

-4- In 2005, I was appointed as associate-dean for internationalization and strategic development of the School of Business and Economics. I was responsible for the development of international partnerships and strategic alliances with academic and non-academic partners, the development of double degree programs, marketing and public relations and alumni policies. As from September 2010 I acted as vice-dean of the School. My term ended in September 2011. For the University of Maastricht, I chair the China/Korea Country Team which is responsible for student recruitment in China and Korea and for the development of strategic alliances with top-chinese universities to co-operate in research and education. In January 2011 I was appointed as professor in economics, in particular in the economics of international education. This position implies being the Dean of Internationalization of Education of Maastricht University. I am responsible for international cooperation initiatives and international recruitment policy at the University level. In addition I am the scientific director of the Maastricht Summer School and scientific director of the Maastricht India initiative (including the MERC office in Bangalore, and the India country team). Teaching experience Groningen (1983) Macroeconomics and Monetary Economics (Groningen, 200 level) Maastricht (1984-1990) Macroeconomics (Maastricht, 100 and 200 level) Economics of the public sector (Maastricht, 200 level) Labor Economics: unions and wages (Maastricht 300/400 level) Maastricht (since 1990) Macroeconomics (Maastricht, 100 and 200 level) International Monetary Economics (Maastricht, 200 level) International Financial Markets and International Banking (Maastricht, 300/400 level) International Economic Policy Coordination and the European Monetary Union (Maastricht, 300/400 level) Introduction to Financial Economics (300 level) The Global Debate (300 level) Minor: Doing Business in Asia (300 level, 2 courses) Social Europe(s) (Msc level) Country Risk Analysis (Maastricht, skills training, 300/400 level) Writing a Master Thesis, skills training (400 level) (Newcastle Australia 1997; 2001-2002) Microeconomics (Newcastle, 100 level) Money and Banking (Newcastle, 200 level) Money and Finance (Newcastle, 300 level)
